Places to Visit in Baku

You can reach the city center from Baku airport by minibus number 116. They have a flight every 30 minutes. If you want to take a taxi or a car, I gave 20 Manat (approximately 12 TL). Let me remind you that the date is April 2015, the exchange rate may change over time.

Baku It is going through a huge change right now. This is why it is one of the favorite destinations of Turkish contractors. The magnificent buildings built by the oil rich and those with oil-based income form the new face of the city. There is a serious restoration work in the city center. It is possible to see the effects of Russian-Baltic architecture here. It is possible to divide Baku into 3 main parts; Icheri City (former Baku), Baku from the times of Soviet Russia and the new city. This article will be mostly about Inner City and the parts of Soviet Russia.

My Suggestions for Places to Visit in Baku

Among my suggestions for places to visit in Baku below, you can easily visit the places other than Ateşgah and Yanardagh in 1-2 days, and that's what I did anyway.

Icheri city (Icheri Sheher)

The old Baku city center, the Castle and many historical places are in this area. It is a UNESCO protected area. There are also Turkish baths and mosques inside the walls. The most important places to see in Icheri City:

  • Quz Qalasi (Maiden's Tower): You can climb the tower and have a look at the Caspian sea from above.
  • Shirvan Shah Palace: I did not enter the palace, you have to ask those who enter 🙂
  • Miniature Book Museum: It was closed for renovations when I went.

Flame Towers

Skyscrapers that have become the symbol of Baku and even Azerbaijan. I recommend seeing it both day and night.

Nizami and Fountain Streets

Nizami's statue
Nizami's statue

This is a big street decorated with Nizami Azerbaijan's most famous poet and his statue. It is also the place where the heart of the city beats. It is a street closed to traffic, where you can find many cafes, restaurants and shopping places.

Martyrdom

Turkish cemetery

There is also a Turkish cemetery inside and it is very impressive, it must be seen. When I went to the cemetery, funiculars were free. During the Azeris' own war of liberation, an Ottoman battalion of 1000 people is sent to Azerbaijan for support. However, these 1000 soldiers resigned from the Ottoman army in order to avoid a crisis between Russia and the Ottoman Empire. All the soldiers die. However, Azerbaijanis are still very grateful to us for this sacrifice. Apart from the martyrdom in Baku, there is also a martyrdom near Gobustan, and I met Azeris who regularly visit that martyrdom and sing our National Anthem when they go.

Flag

A huge Azerbaijani flag is waving on the Caspian coast.

Caspian coast

On the shores of the Caspian Sea, a wide landscape has been made, it is very suitable for walking, tea and coffee breaks, and it is very calm.

National Museum

The exterior of the museum building is adorned with sculptures of the country's famous poets, writers and artists.

Carpet Museum

National Science Museum

Atesgah

It was closed for restoration work when I was there.

Yanardagh

A mountain with a constantly burning fire. You can think of it like our Olympus.

The only thing that bothers me in Baku is that the economic difference in society is seriously visible. On the one hand, large, elegant and magnificent buildings are made up of makeshift slums in the back street. In order to change the image of the city, they tried to make the makeshift buildings as invisible as possible. High walls have been built on the sides of the highways so that the slums are not visible.

  1. 20 manat has never been 12 TL. 1 manat = 2.48 TL is on the line right now.

And you wrote the National Museum. It is the National Museum of Literature.

Baku architecture consists of 4 parts: inside şəhər (the oldest), buildings built during the Russian Empire, buildings built during the Soviet era and those built during the independence period after 91.

The buildings built during the imperial period were built by the oil rich of Baku at the end of the 19th century, until the USSR occupation of the 20th century. Some buildings were copied almost identically from European cities. And almost all of them were built by foreign, European architects.

Soviet-era buildings are just copy paste. You can see the same in other USSR countries.

Finally, the period of independence after 91. These buildings are the poorest. There is no architecture. It was built in the "Basmemmed" method.
