Getting to Venice

Delayed departure from Milan train station. We take a 2,5-hour train journey from Milan to Venice. We are moving on a fertile plain. We are surrounded by factories and vineyards on our right and left, and on our left we see the Alps on the horizon. The weather is sunny daily, there is snow on the Alps.

Finally after 2,5 hours Venice We are at the train station. Passing over a bridge connecting the station with the mainland, the train takes us to Venice. When we get out of the train station, we take a bath with that beautiful mystical view of Venice.

From the train station to our hotel, the biggest canal of Venice, Grand Canal We get on the working boats. 6 € per person. A tip for you; No one checks the ticket. You can get on without a ticket, if you're lucky, no one will check the ticket.

Dropping us off at the stop at the Rialto bridge, the boat continues towards the farthest corners of Venice.

Where to Stay in Venice

Although the location of our hotel is very easy, we wander up and down the small streets because of our ineptitude in reading maps. Finally our hotel San Lio Tourist HouseWhen we find it, its appearance from the outside disappoints me. Once inside, I'll change my mind. The entrance part amuses us a lot. There is no hotel sign, just a door. We ring the bell, he invites us in. When we go up the steep stairs we arrive at the reception but no one is there. There is a note on the table saying that we have to remove the phone, it also says that since it is an IP phone, the sound will come in 1 second 🙂 I pick up the phone and wait. The polite Italian on the phone says that we can leave our luggage there and that we have to come to their other building down the street to check-in. We go there and do our check-in. We have only 1 day to visit Venice and we are already halfway through this day. We leave our belongings in our room and immediately throw ourselves into the street.

Places to Visit in Venice

Venice is like a labyrinth. You can wander around its narrow streets for hours like a mouse in a trap.

St. Mark's Square and Basilica

We leave the enjoyment of the streets for later. San Marco SquareWe take our first breath in in all its glory St. Mark's Basilica welcomes us. One of the most impressive squares I've ever seen. Basalika strengthens this effect even more. No matter what photo I put, it is not possible for me to show that effect, you have to go and see it.

Venice San Marco Square
Venice San Marco Square

San Giorgio Maggiore Church and Campanile (Belle Tower)

We leave the square for now, as we were in the backlight at noon, we will come and take pictures when the sun goes down a little bit. The Campanile (Belfry), which is the bell tower of the church, comes to the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore. What are we going to climb? That was the plan, unfortunately the Bell Tower is closing at 16.30, we can't catch up. I miss the opportunity to see Venice from above once again 🙁

Our journey through the streets of Venice continues. While walking around the streets, we come across a covered well. And of course, the gondolas that run along the canals. I guess that's what makes the city so poetic. Those long gondolas circling the narrow canals. The gondoliers in their striped t-shirts look like part of a movie set.

We explore all the squares that our classical touristic map shows us, by wandering around the streets. In the meantime, it is impossible to pass by without looking at the windows of the small and interesting shops in the streets. We do not forget to return to San Marco once again and see how the light is.

That huge building you see on the right is the bell tower, unfortunately I can't get to the top and see the fish-shaped view of all of Venice. I'm sooooo sorry about this 🙁

Bridge of Sighs

Venice - Bridge of Sighs
Venice – Bridge of Sighs

Famous on the other side of the square Bridge of Sighs there is. The story of the name of the bridge, which was built in 1602, is a bit pathetic. Those who were convicted in ancient times, after the trial from the bridge he was imprisoned. That's why it's called the Bridge of Sighs.

We travel all the streets on the map so that there is no street we did not go. We also explore the small squares on the opposite side of the Rialto. We have become quite adept at following the streets now.

The weather is getting a little dark, Venice is also beautiful at night…

Grande Canale and Rialto Bridge

Venice Rialto Bridge
Venice Rialto Bridge

Although there are many canals in Venice, the biggest of these canals, the Grande Canale, is like the main vein of the city. The famous Rialto Bridge is also located on this great canal. We enjoy the night view for a while.

We've been on the streets all day, a sweet tiredness descends. The next morning we go to the train early again. This time, we walk to the station in order to be able to tour the streets of Venice once again. Around 8 am, the streets are much more crowded than we expected, people living nearby come here to work. Bringing supplies to shops, hotels and restaurants, a lot of large and small motors unload their cargo from the side of the canals.

I don't like leaving this fairy tale city behind.

If you spend a few days in Venice instead of a day trip, you can also visit the islands of Burano and Murano, which are famous for their glasswork and colorful buildings. Did you know that glasswork here was learned from glass masters from Paşabahçe during the Ottoman period?

Stay on track!

"Does he who reads a lot or travels a lot?" I started by saying, I am still looking for an answer. I travel after my dreams and share my experiences on my blog, newspapers and magazines. I love to travel, read, write and dream.

  1. A carnival in Venice, the city of masks, a love story in this carnival. Venice is a city where people find a piece of themselves. A city where travelers get lost in its narrow lanes and lovers wander its canals. I wrote a story accompanied by the photographs I took while wandering the streets of this city in love. I hope you will like it.

Venice, the city of love hidden behind masks.
