Where is Sharm El Sheikh?

Sharm El Sheikh has a very special place due to its location. At the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, there is the Suez Canal on one side and the Gulf of Aqabe on the other. It has a magnificent coastline with the Red Sea in front of Mount Sinai behind it. You can see the exact location of Sharm El Sheikh on the map below.

How to Get to Sharm El Sheikh from Turkey?

You can reach Sharm El Sheikh in just 3 hours with a direct flight from Turkey. Scheduled flights of Pegasus Airlines and Turkish Airlines continue throughout the year. The only problem is that the flight times are after midnight.

We preferred Pegasus Airlines because the price was cheap. On our way, we flew from Istanbul to Sharm El Sheikh at 00:30 at night. We landed in Sharm around 02:05 due to the time difference. On the way back, we took off from Sharm at 03:10 and landed in Istanbul at 06:50 in the morning. THY's flight times are in the same time zone.

Currently, it is very difficult to obtain an Egyptian visa, but with a regulation in 2022, Turkish citizens can go to Sharm El Sheikh and the Sinai Region without the need for a visa. If you are over the age of 45 or under the age of 18, it is easier to get an Egyptian visa, you can enter the job with a door visa.

How to get Egypt visa? My post will definitely come in handy.

How to Get to the Pyramids or Cairo from Sharm El Sheikh

To get to the pyramids from Sharm El Sheikh, you first need to go to Cairo. If you say how many kilometers between Sharm El Sheikh and the pyramids, it is about 530 kilometers.

You can get from Sharm El Sheikh to Cairo in several different ways. Let's look at the pros and cons together.

1) Transportation from Sharm El Sheikh to Cairo by Private Vehicle

Let me start by saying "I definitely do not recommend renting a car in Egypt". For the same reason, I do not recommend you to travel intercity with a private vehicle.

There are too many security checks on intercity roads in Egypt and vehicles are constantly stopped. If you do not know Arabic, it will be very difficult for you to come to terms with the security forces who are stopping you. Another problem is that the Egyptians ask for money for everything under the name of "tips". So you can deal with tipping every security force that stops you on the way. In summary, if I were you, I would not rent a car in Egypt and travel intercity in Egypt with a private car.

2) Transportation from Sharm El Sheikh to Cairo by Bus

You can go to Cairo from Sharm El Sheikh by bus. It takes 8 hours to travel from Sharm to Cairo and 10 hours to return. If you prefer the day buses, you have to go through fewer security checks. They stop the night buses almost every hour to check IDs and sometimes bags.

Bus companies have their own bus stations in Egypt. Generally, it is not a case of finding all the bus companies you want to buy tickets from and getting them. For example, there is a general bus station in Sharm and Gobus has its own station. You should pay attention to this when buying tickets.

Another issue is “this is Egypt”. In other words, your bus may not be on time, it may be delayed for 1 hour, it may be on time, be prepared for all of them.

Bus companies that you can travel from Sharm to Cairo:

  1. gobus: Gobus is the most popular and most reliable bus company. However, I recommend that you take the Elite or Elite Plus buses. You can buy your bus ticket online or via the mobile application. It is enough to show the confirmation e-mail when boarding the bus.
  2. Blue Bus: Blue Bus is one of the most common companies. I've never used it, everyone was recommending Gobus. You can also buy Blue Bus tickets online.
  3. Delta: Like Gobus, bus times are not very clear, you cannot buy tickets online. I used this company when I was going from Dahab to Sharm, it was only 1 hour and the bus was with this company at the latest. I came to the bus station around 10:30 because there was a bus at 10:00, they put me on an apartopar bus, it turned out that the bus does not enter the Sharm bus station, but enters Delta's own transit bus station. It was very difficult to find a taxi from there.

3) Flight from Sharm El Sheikh to Cairo

It is possible to go to Cairo from Sharm El Sheikh by plane. Local airline companies such as Nile Air and Egypt Air have flights. However, I didn't choose it because the 1-hour flight is around USD 100-150 round trip. If you went to Sharm visa-free with the last application, don't forget that you need a visa for Cairo!

4) Getting to the Pyramids from Sharm El Sheikh by Tour

Many travel agencies in Sharm offer day trips to the pyramids. These trips have round trips by plane, and there are also those by bus.

I do not recommend a daily tour with a bus, because the bus journey takes 8 hours to go and 10 hours to return. I'm sure it would be very tiring to go one night and visit the pyramids during the day and come back the same night. However, the choice is yours of course.

If you went to Sharm visa-free with the last application, remember that you also need a visa for Cairo!

5) How to Get from Sharm El Sheikh to Dahab?

Dahab, whose popularity has increased rapidly in recent years, is only 1 hour away from Sharm El Sheikh. The bus companies I mentioned above have buses at different times during the day. Since Dahab is on the Sinai Peninsula, it is one of the places where you can go without a visa.

Another option is to go between Dahab-Sharm by taxi, and it is possible to arrange a taxi around 30-40 Usd.

6) How to get from Sharm El Sheikh to Hurghada?

Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada are the two most popular sea resort cities in Egypt. Generally, those who come to Egypt prefer one of these or want to see both.

There used to be a ferry between the two cities, but it was canceled for security reasons. Currently, you need to go to Cairo and pass through Cairo to switch between these two cities. It is quite a long and grueling road. There is no direct flight between the two cities, you have to go via Cairo, which is very expensive.

  1. Hello, what are the official documents that need to be obtained for Sharm El Sheikh? Is having a passport and a flight ticket enough? Are there any documents etc?

  2. Hello,

First of all, thank you for your work. I have a question for you.
I am planning to go to Sharm visa free in March 2023. I was thinking that I would go to hurghada from there by ferry. I know that unlike Cairo, Hurghada does not require a visa. However, you said in your article that the ferries are not operating for security reasons, is this information up to date? Do you have any information about the current situation?
    Thank you so much.

  3. Hello,
I have a question for you. No visa is required for Sharm el-Sheikh. But it is requested for Cairo. Do you have any information on how to proceed if we buy a daily pyramid tour after going to Sharm el sheikh?
