What You Need to Know Before Going to Egypt

You want to go to Egypt, of course, history and nature are very tempting, but first I would like to list the topics to be said, “I wish someone had warned me before going to Egypt”;

Egypt Visa

Egypt required visas from Turkish citizens until May 2023, and the visa process was quite painful. From that date on, it is possible to enter Egypt with a gate visa. Entry to the Sinai Peninsula is visa-free for up to 15 days, and to enter other parts of Egypt, you only need to get a 25 USD gate visa. Detail Egypt visa in my post.

Intercity Transportation

The distances between the sights in Egypt are quite far apart, so be sure to allow time for intermediate passes when planning! Air Cairo and Eygpt Air are airline companies that you can use for domestic flights. Go-bus is the safest way to travel by bus, you can buy your tickets online. In big cities such as Cairo, there may be more than one bus terminal, be careful when buying tickets.

Tourist Harassment – Tourist Trap

The so-called tourist harassment in Egypt is horrendous. I've been to more than 60 countries, and I've never seen a country that chases, lies, talks, and annoys tourists as much as Egypt. Among the cities I have seen in Egypt, there is no harassment in Dahab and Alexandria, Cairo being the worst in this regard. The harassment around the pyramids and historical sites is particularly high. Luxor and Aswan are also worse… Everyone, including the police and security guard, is making all kinds of fictions to extort money from you. Those who say that the Cairo Museum is not open to individual visitors in order to sell tours, those who walk next to you for minutes to sell a shawl, the police who first say take my photo and then ask for a tip, those who say I am the keeper of this place and take it to irrelevant places... This list goes on, don't look at everyone who calls out to Egypt Once eye to eye, it is more difficult to get rid of.

Bargain, Bargain, Bargain

You will have to bargain for everything in Egypt. They will say three, sometimes you will get one for two, but even when you get one, you will think, "I'm definitely screwed". Taxi, hotel, tour, souvenirs, clothes, whatever you can think of, you have to bargain.

In order not to deal with taxi bargains, there is an Uber-like application called “Careem” that you can use in big cities, don't forget to download it to your phone.

Weather forecast

Since Egypt is close to the equator, the weather is hot 12 months of the year. It is a great situation for a sea vacation in winter. However, since the temperatures are over 40 degrees and very hot in the summer months, you should definitely bring high factor sunscreen and a hat with you.

Cleaning?

There is a general uncleanness problem in Egypt and even in most of the Arab countries. Among the Arab countries I have seen, Syria was the worst in this regard. Do not expect cleanliness to our standards in Egypt. When choosing a hotel for accommodation, be sure to look at the reviews and choose those with a rating of 9 and above. Do not forget to carry disinfectant and cologne with you. Click to find suitable hotel in Egypt.

Toilets

When we go abroad, we are used to not having a bidet. However, in many Arab countries, instead of a faucet, a hose like a shower head is used for the bidet process. Egypt doesn't have these hoses either, so don't forget to take plenty of wet wipes with you. Why doesn't this world use the bidet as in Turkey?

Egypt Travel Route Recommendations

You need at least a month to tour all of Egypt properly. However, I have prepared different routes to make your job easier. Thus, you will be able to see the important places to see in Egypt for 1 week or less. The first route I prepared is a cultural trip, the second route is a sea and culture trip, and the last route is a faster cultural route. If you're ready, here we go!

  1. Cairo > Luxor > Aswan > Alexandria
  2. Sharm El Sheikh > Dahab > Mount Sinai > Cairo > Alexandria
  3. Hurghada>Luxor>Aswan>Hurghada

You can see the route details below;

1 Week Egypt Culture Trip Proposal

Our first trip starts from Cairo and ends in Cairo. Cairo > Luxor > Aswan > Alexandria contains the route. It is possible to come directly to Cairo from Istanbul with Turkish Airlines or Egyptian Air airlines.

Day 1: Cairo

Cairo Museum
Cairo Museum

As soon as you land in Cairo, I definitely recommend you to see the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square. The museum opens at 09:00 in the morning. You can spend a few hours here. Update: The Museum has moved near the Pyramids, so plan accordingly.

For lunch, I suggest you try local flavor kosher at Abu Tarek restaurant, which is 10 minutes' walk from the museum. I leave the location of the restaurant like this: https://goo.gl/maps/g7APLLFzSv8AWG4r8

You have 2 different options for the afternoon, the first is to visit the area called Islamic Cairo. In the evening, head towards Zuwayla Gate (Bab Zuwayla), one of the entrances to the old city, towards sunset. There is an exit to the upper floor of the mosque here, you can get out by paying 40 Egyptian Pounds. You will see a beautiful view of the old town.

Cairo Coptic Quarter
Cairo Coptic Quarter

The other option is the Coptic Quarter, the Christian district of Cairo. There are many churches and a museum here. This region offers a more comfortable trip.

In the evening, you can both see the city at night and take a Nile cruise by joining a Nile tour with or without food.

Day 2: Pyramids

Pyramids
Pyramids

I suggest you get up early on the second morning and go to the Pyramids. You can go by public transport or by taking a taxi, the details are in my Pyramids article. Let your first stop be the Pyramids of Giza, one of the 7 wonders of the world, and your second stop, the Pyramid of Saqara, the world's first pyramid. These two regions will take your whole day anyway.

For details Pyramids of Giza Check out my post.

Make your plans to take the evening train to Luxor. This train, called the sleeper train, is designed for tourists, local people do not use it much. You can spend the night sleeping on the train and be in Luxor or Aswan in the morning if you want.

Day 3: Luxor

luxor
luxor

Although not as famous as the pyramids in Cairo, Luxor is just as impressive as the pyramids. One of the must-see places in Egypt, in my opinion, is Luxor. There are Karnak Temple, Valley of the Kings, Hatshepshut Temple and many other places to see. After spending the whole day here, depart for Aswan in the evening.

Day 4: Aswan – Abu Simbel Temple

Abu Simbel Temple
Abu Simbel Temple

Convoys departing from Aswan at 04:00 every day go to Abu Simbel Temple at the end of Aswan dam. Therefore, you need to book this tour in advance. Towards noon the convoys return. In the afternoon, you can take a ride on the boats called Felluka in the reservoir, and visit the village where the Nubian people live, many of whose villages were flooded due to the reservoir.

Abu Simbel Temple The article may interest you.

It is a 3-4 hour distance from Aswan to Luxor. If you want to return by Sleeper train, you need to return to Luxor immediately after Abu Simbel. However, I suggest you spend time in Aswan.

If you have extra time for a few days, you can join boat tours between Luxor and Aswan where you can spend the night on the Nile.

Day 5: Cairo-Alexandria

Alexandria
Alexandria

If you have arrived in Cairo by train or plane, you can plan to go to Alexandria. Even if you come by night train, you can go directly to Alexandria. However, train tickets sell out quickly, so be sure to buy your tickets in advance.

Pompeii Column, Roman tombs, Archaeological Museum and Alexandria Library are the places you can see on the first day in Alexandria.

For a meal in Alexandria, be sure to spend a meal tasting traditional Egyptian food at the local restaurant, Mohammed Ahmed.

Day 6: Alexandria

Spend the second day in Alexandria touring the Quitbay Castle and then the Montana Palace and gardens. You can also wander around the coastline called Little Venice. Also, if you want to swim, there are long beaches around Alexandria. It can be interesting to swim on this side of the Mediterranean as well.

Return to Cairo in the evening. It takes about 3 hours from Alexandria to Cairo.

Alexandria travel guide Be sure to check out my post.

Day 7: Cairo

Cairo
Cairo

We are in Cairo again. There are a few places left in Cairo that we haven't been to in the previous days. Cairo Castle, Sultan Hasan Mosque and Madrasa, Turkish martyrdom are places to visit today.

I also have an ambitious suggestion. I couldn't go, maybe you can go. There is a place called the garbage city, which can be called the worst part of the city, in Cairo: Garbage City. There are cave churches right on the coast of this region. If you're curious about the story Samaan Church you can check the website.

Now we are ready to go back. On this route, you will see almost all of the important places to see about Egyptian history and culture in great detail.

If your time is limited, you can omit Alexandria and the last day of Cairo from the plan. Thus, you can complete your trip in a maximum of 5 days.

1 Week Egypt Sea and Culture Trip Proposal

Our second trip starts from Sharm El Sheikh and ends in Cairo. Sharm El Sheikh > Dahab > Mount Sinai > Cairo > Alexandria contains the route. You can go directly to Sharm El Sheikh from Istanbul with THY or Pegasus airlines.

Day 1: Sharm El Sheikh

Sharm El Sheikh

Day 2: Sharm El Sheikh – Ras Mohammed National Park

Ras Mohammed National Park
Ras Mohammed National Park

You might consider going on a desert safari at sunrise. You can leave your hotel at 4 in the morning, make a safari with ATVs, watch the sunrise in the desert and return to your hotel early in the morning. For the rest of the day, you can explore Ras Mohammed National Park by land or sea. In both cases, you need to take a day tour.

We cross from Sharm to Dahab in the evening for our third day, the journey takes only 1 hour. You can go to Dahab by bus or taxi.

Day 3: Dahab – Blue Hole

Dahab - Blue Hole
Dahab – Blue Hole

Dahab is Egypt's most bohemian city. When you arrive the night before, you can arrange a Blue Hole tour from the agencies on the beach. You can get a day tour that includes the Blue Hole, Ras Abu Galum and Blue Lagoon, a 100-meter hole in the sea, for around USD 25.

Dahab places to visit My post will also be of interest to you.

In the evening, you can dine at one of the beachside restaurants in the Light House district of Dahab.

In fact, on the evening of the third day, you have to set out to watch the sunrise on Mount Sinai. You will depart at 10.00:12.00 am and return to your hotel around 15:XNUMX noon the next day. I bought this tour for XNUMX Usd from Dahab, you can also buy the same tour from Sharm.

Mount Sinai Hike Check out my post too.

You can spend the afternoon sleeping by the seaside and swimming occasionally. This is the best place to chill in Egypt.

Now it's time to move on to Cairo. If you want, you can take the night bus, or you can go to Cairo by plane from Sharm. The night bus unfortunately takes longer than the day trip due to security checks.

Day 5: Cairo

Cairo Museum
Cairo Museum

You can apply the first day of the first plan here.

Day 6: Cairo – Pyramids

Pyramids
Pyramids

You can apply the first day of the first plan here.

Day 7: Alexandria

You can join daily tours to Alexandria from Cairo or you can go by bus yourself. It will be tiring, but possible.

In our second plan, we do 3 days of sea and 4 days of culture and nature trips. If your time is limited, you can make a 5-day plan by removing the Alexandria and Mount Sinai hike from the route.

Alternative Quick Plan

Hurghada is one of Egypt's most popular seaside destinations. Hurghada>Luxor>Aswan>Hurghada It's a quick and plentiful plan to make.

Pegasus has direct flights from Istanbul to Hurghada and you can find very affordable plane tickets. If you catch such a ticket, you can plan for the Hurghada, Luxor, Aswan route. For the details of this route that I fit in only 3 days Hurghada and Luxor Trip Check out my post.

Hurghada places to visit Check out my post.

  1. Abdurrahman Ozkaynak

    Hello, Ms. Sevil.
I regret that I have just seen the information you wrote about my trip to Egypt, which I went to in March and unfortunately interrupted my phone call after the Friday prayer at the Hussein Mosque (Al-Hussein Mosque) in Cairo, and I came back, and I am happy to see your articles, even if they are new. I had planned a trip to return from Sharm after a trip to Hurghada, Luxor and Aswan with the Go Bus that started in Sharm El Sheikh. After I had my phone stolen from Ancal Sharm, I got very depressed, and in order not to have to buy a new phone and not to worry about my phone loss, I bought it from Egypt Air (which is cheaper than THY) on the evening of the 3rd day. With the ticket I bought, I returned first to Istanbul and then to Konya. I hope I will make a trip to Egypt again, taking into account your travel notes.
Good luck with your efforts. Love and respect.

  2. Mehmet Ali Sahbazoglu

Hello, Ms. Sevil, I looked at all the detailed articles you wrote about Egypt, it was really helpful. I want to ask two things.
1- Our visa has just been issued (1 month) deadline 09.02.202 told us that it has a validity of one month when the company entered before 09.02.2020, he stated that the visa period, that is, enter before 09.02 and stay for 1 month, still I am not sure about your issue. Do you have any information?
2-I will go with my girlfriend and we have 2 weeks, we think as Sharm arrival and return to Hurghada, our route is as follows
-Sharm arrival (3 nights stay) -We want to go to Dahab too.-
-Cairo 3 or 4 nights overnight or 1 night in Alexandria and XNUMX night in the desert
-Departure from Aswan by train (1 night on the train and 2 nights trip to Aswan and Abu Simel)
    -Luxor 2 nights
    -Return without accommodation in Hurghada.
We have a plan to last 11-12 nights. Our budget is limited, can you give some advice about adding or removing something about our route?

    • Hello,
      1. The company from which you obtained the visa is constantly doing this job, the information it gives will be much more accurate than what I will give. As far as I know, the information you have received is correct, you can use your visa for a maximum of 1 month from the date of entry and the last exit will be 09.02.2020.
      2. You have already read my Egypt route suggestions. I've shared all of my advice there and in my other blog posts, all in great detail. Only in this plan I see that you have a 1 night desert stay in Cairo. If you are going to the area called White Desert, you need to spend 1 night but 2 days, you can think of it as a departure one day, an overnight stay and one day return. Aswan and Luxor may be more than 2 nights each, instead you can spend 1 day in Hurghada and swim in the sea. You have quite a busy route, it would be nice to rest at the end.

Have a nice trip in advance.

  3. I thought what a useful article could have been written, thank you for your effort. It was a great service for those who will read before going to Egypt. Best regards, Suhkran

    • Thank you very much. Thank you. I was asked a lot about which routes we should go, so I thought I'd give a collective answer.
