In this article Car rental in Iceland I will explain the options and what you should pay attention to when renting a car in Iceland. Moreover, car rental discount in Iceland is hidden in the text!
Iceland is one of the places where you need to be careful while renting and driving a car due to the harsh climate and road conditions. Thanks to this article, your pocket will be comfortable and your Iceland trip will be more comfortable 🙂
Things to Consider While Renting a Car in Iceland
Iceland has made a rapid leap in tourism in recent years. Since the places to see in Iceland are scattered and the touristic route is a vehicle travel route, car rental is the most preferred mode of transportation for foreigners coming to the country. Keflavik airport, which is the gateway to the country, has a huge car rental section. There are many options for car rental. The reason for the many options is the need to build long roads, the natural beauty of almost every place to be seen in the country, the difficult roads, and the expensiveness of accommodation, so car rental and accommodation are tried to be handled together.
There are some issues that you need to decide before renting a car in Iceland, let's take a look at them first;
Road Condition, Road Selection
With your trip in Iceland, will you take the roads we call the secondary road and the Icelanders call the F Road? Passenger vehicles are not allowed to enter the secondary roads, you can only enter these roads with 4×4 vehicles. Therefore, if you are going to enter the secondary roads, you need to rent a 4×4 vehicle. How will you decide whether to take the secondary roads, or how to decide the roads of the places you want to go, this is where many official Icelandic websites come into play. Road.is is one of them, you can check the road conditions from this site.
Accommodation
The second issue you need to solve is how to stay in Iceland. Iceland is rich in accommodation options, but the prices are scorching. You can stay in places such as hotels/hostels/guesthouses with the cheapest prices starting from 30-40 euros per person. Another option is to camp. Almost every city in Iceland has one or more campgrounds. However, if you are going in September like us, tent camping can be quite challenging due to rain, wind and cold. You can check the weather conditions for the period you are going to at en.vedur.is. Other ways to camp are to rent a vehicle with a top tent (that's what we did), to use the back of the vehicle for accommodation in Camper-style vehicles (a very common option in Iceland). When you rent a regular car, you can set up your own tent or choose hotel/hostel/guesthouse options.
Fuel Type
Since gasoline is expensive in Iceland, the diesel vehicle you will rent will relieve your pocket a little more. There are 2 types of fuel in Iceland: 95 octane gasoline or diesel. While the price of 95 Octane gasoline is 233 ISK (13,3 TL), the diesel price is 226 ISK (12,9 TL), so there is no big gap between them. Still, snow is snow.
Internet in Vehicle
Having wifi in the car you will rent is very useful in Icelandic conditions. Especially if you have more than one person in the vehicle, internet sharing is very practical and easy. You can get a local line for yourself, but you should definitely consider this option.
Insurance
When renting a car in Iceland, they will put a lot of insurance options in front of you. Simple package, bronze package, gold package etc. The main problem in Iceland is weather and road conditions. It is very common for vehicle doors to break due to strong winds, as well as stone splashes on secondary roads, scratching of the vehicle or broken/cracked glass. We did not go up to the platinum package, but we preferred the gold package. Be sure to take a look at the insurance options in the place where you will rent, as the package contents vary according to the rental company.
Gear Type
If you want to see a lot of places in Iceland in a week like us, your vehicle should help you. We preferred the automatic vehicle to be able to use it with two drivers and to be comfortable in driving (because I cannot drive a manual vehicle, I took the wheel where my wife got tired).
Things to Consider While Driving in Iceland
The maximum speed limit for vehicles in Iceland is 90 km/h. It is very critical to comply with the speed limits, if you are caught on the radar, they will never forgive you. Likewise, your seat belt must be fastened. If you get caught on both counts, you will be punished. Entering F-roads with a passenger car is subject to the same penalty. While renting the vehicle, we were strictly warned about these issues 🙂
When you rent a car in Iceland, rental companies can give you a card that will give you a discount at certain gas stations. Our discount for the car we rented from Lotus Car Rental was at the N1 gas station. We were able to find stations all over Iceland. Gas stations are not very frequent, so when we found a gas station, we filled the tank immediately, keep in mind.
If we have decided on the above items, it will now be much easier to choose the vehicle.
Car Rental Options in Iceland
If you have decided on the roads and accommodation type you will travel in Iceland, you can rent one of the options below.
Passenger Car Rental
In Iceland, if you are going to make roads on the main roads and you are going to stay in a hotel / hostel / guesthouse or your own tent, the most economical method is normal car rental. Since the vehicle is small, the fuel consumption will be more economical, and the daily rental prices of small vehicles are also low. Regular car rental is the cheapest rental method in Iceland.
4×4 Car Rental
If you are eager to enter F-Roads (side roads) like us, you have no choice but to rent a 4×4. Already Iceland may be the richest country I have ever seen in terms of the variety of 4×4 vehicle models. 4×4 vehicles have higher fuel consumption than passenger cars. In addition, daily rental fees are expensive compared to passenger cars. But for F-Roads you have no choice. Vehicle tents can also be attached to these vehicles, our vehicle was like that. Thus, you do not need to carry your own tent for accommodation or deal with setup/removal, it can be opened and closed in a very practical way.
Camper Rental
Sleeper camper vehicles are one of the most widely used transportation and accommodation options. It is a very convenient method if you are two people and want to use your car for accommodation. While the driver and two people in the side seats can travel in the front, these are the vehicles whose rear is designed as a storage area with the upper part and the under-bed part. A few of the brands I encountered on the road; Kuku Campers (don't laugh), Camp.is, GoCamper, Easy Camper, Rent.is, Happy Campers.
Caravan Rental
Caravan rental is one of the most preferred methods of making accommodation in a vehicle. There are many types/models of caravans. You can choose the caravan to rent according to how many people you will travel. However, when compared to the above alternatives, this is the most costly method in terms of both fuel and daily rental fee. It may be an option for those who want to be a little more comfortable. However, although we only encountered one accident during the 7 days we traveled in Iceland, we came across 1-2 overturned trailers. Strong winds in the country can cause caravans to topple over.
My suggestion is that if you are not enthusiastic about the places to go with F-Roads and you are going during the summer months, you can rent a passenger car and have accommodation in your own tent. If you went in the fall like us and are going to enter F-Roads, 4×4 or Campers are good alternatives. When your travel date is clear, I recommend you to handle your car rental process quickly, the existing tourism infrastructure in Iceland is struggling to meet the incoming demand, if you leave your car rental business to the last minute, the probability of finding a car you want is low and you may have to pay more than necessary. After we bought our plane ticket, we also took care of our car rental business, which corresponds to 7-8 months before our trip 🙂
