Besides being one of the most beautiful and special countries in the world, Iceland is one of the most expensive countries. With the recent depreciation of the Turkish lira, we Turks are poor in Iceland as you know 🙂 We spent a week in the country where a bowl of soup is 80TL and a cucumber is 20TL. What was the cost of a one-week Iceland trip, how did we make our Iceland trip cheap, in my article, continue reading 🙂

First of all, before reading this article, there is an important point that I would like to point out! On this trip, my wife and I, as a couple, tried to keep our costs at a minimum by staying in camps for half of the trip and staying in guesthouses for the other half, and taking almost all of our food from Turkey. Considering these conditions, it is important to evaluate the costs. If you say I will stay in sweet hotels and eat out for every meal, you cannot go up to these prices.

I have listed our spending items from the most expensive to the least expensive.

One Week 4X4 Car Rental

The most expensive item of our Iceland trip was our one-week 4×4 car rental. The total price we paid for the vehicle was 580 euros, and since we shared two people, it decreased to 290 euros per person. Our extras such as in-vehicle wifi, on-board tent and bronze and silver plan insurance are also included in this price.

Istanbul-Iceland Round-Trip Flight Ticket

Since we live in Istanbul, our flight start and end points are Istanbul. We bought our flight tickets from Atatürk Airport with Lufthansa via Frankfurt on January 9th. Fortunately, we bought it in TL at that time, otherwise, who knows how expensive it would be because of the exchange rate. The TL flight ticket we bought at that time is 223 euros per person, at today's exchange rate. The euro equivalent on the date we bought it was 359. However, since we paid in TL, I converted it to Euro at today's rate.

Gasoline Prices in Iceland

When renting a car in Iceland, of course, one of our highest expenditure items was gasoline. The price of 95 Octane gasoline in Iceland corresponds to 233 ISK, or 1,78 euros. Our total gasoline expenditure was 396 euros. 198 euro per person dropped. In smaller vehicles or diesel vehicles, this cost will be much lower.

Accommodation Prices in Iceland

Although we spent half of our trip in tent camps and half in guesthouses, our total accommodation expenditure for two people was 388 euros, 194 euros per person. We stayed for 8 nights, so it came to an average of 24 euros per person per night.

Eating and Drinking in Iceland

We went to Iceland with about 17 kilos of food from Turkey and they cost only 55 euros in total. From Iceland, we only bought a few simple needs such as wine and beer at the entrance from duty free, and bread and fruit juice in the city. While our food and beverage expenditure for two people was only 88 euros, it came to 44 euros per person.

Why did you carry so much food, I can hear you say, so let me give a few examples of prices; A bowl of soup costs around 80TL. You can find unlimited soup and bread in many places in Iceland. Because it's the cheapest meal. The price of half a kilo of tomatoes in greenhouses is 17 TL. It's not even 1 kilo, I draw your attention 🙂 Sandwiches are around 150-160 TL. If you want to eat fish, it seems like it starts from 300TL…

We had other expenses of 6 euros per person. So we hardly spent any extra 🙂 The ultimate in stinginess 🙂

What Was Iceland Trip Cost?

At the end of a week's travel in Iceland, the cost of the Iceland trip was 955 euros per person. To summarize in summary;

  • Car rental: 290 euro
  • Airfare: 223 euros
  • Gasoline: 198 euros
  • Accommodation: 194 euro
  • Food and beverage: 44 euros
  • Other: 6 euros
  • TOTAL: 955 EURO

Expenses that you can cut down in these expenses;

  • the cost of renting a car by renting a smaller class car,
  • again, the cost of gasoline by renting a smaller class vehicle,
  • You can reduce the cost of accommodation by staying in more camps instead of guesthouses. I get questions like can we not camp at the campsites? Yes you can, but everywhere there are warnings that camping is prohibited outside the campsites, it would be great if you could do it without getting caught. You don't pay any money for accommodation.

Silfra Diving and Snorkeling Experience

I did not add the cost of diving (my wife) and my snorkeling activity in the Silfra rift, which is considered one of the top 10 diving spots in the world, because these are very private costs for us. For those wondering, 2 dives are 300 euros, snorkeling is around 115 euros.

I tried to detail as much as possible about the cost of a one week trip to Iceland, I hope it will be useful.
