Iceland, the far country of the north, we reached this little-known country, which is rarely visited, by connecting via Frankfurt. Our flight with Lufthansa airlines took place as Istanbul-Frankfurt, Frankfurt Keflavik. Iceland Keflavik Airport, you it Reykjavik Airport As you may know, I have collected my notes about this article in this article.

Keflavik airport is an airport where you can feel good when you enter with its regular, simple and stylish design befitting northern countries. If you are coming to Keflavik by connecting from Frankfurt (or anywhere in Europe), you can reach the exit directly without going through any passport control or security point.

General Information About Keflavik Airport

Keflavik airport is 45 km from the center of Reykjavik, so it is quite a distance. The reason why the name of the airport is Keflavik, not Reykjavik, is because the area is located in the city of Keflavik.

When you land at Keflavik airport, you can drink water from the fountains in front of the toilets. Tap water across Iceland comes from glaciers, so it's incredibly clean and delicious. You can't get enough of drinking, do not pay for water in Iceland. If you have a bottle or flask with you, you will fill your bottle and meet your water needs as soon as you land, the same applies to returning. As you know, it is forbidden to pass the liquid through the security check, but you can pass your empty bottle.

Keflavik airport has been designed for the comfort of passengers, and there are electrical sockets just below the waiting seats in the common area. You can easily charge your phone or computer. There are both sockets and USB inputs. Also, these seating areas do not have armrests, so if your flight is too late or too early, you have the chance to sleep here.

On your return from Keflavik, if you have checked in online, you can send your luggage yourself from the self-service desks. Thus, you do not have to queue at the counters. However, you must have standard luggage for this. Since our backpacks are in special baggage status, they directed us to the ODD BAGGAGE department where different sizes of luggage are sent after the check-in process, and we gave our luggage there. Although not at every airport, you can find this application in some airports. Since the ropes of the backpacks can be attached to the luggage belts, they are taken to the plane from a different line, and when delivered, they are delivered from different luggage compartments, not to the luggage belts. We took it off the tape while we were getting our luggage, though. In the past, we used to wrap our backpacks at the airport so that they are not treated as different luggage and do not get dirty, but in AHL, luggage wrapping was 50TL, 2 bags would be a little over 100TL, so we preferred not to wrap them. We didn't even look at the price in Keflavik, everything in the country is extra expensive, wrapping can't be cheap either 🙂

There is free internet connection at Keflavik airport both on the way out and on the way back (the round trip already uses the same place). Filling out a small form asking for your e-mail address and which country you are from is enough to connect to the internet.

Cash Exchange at Keflavik Airport

Euro, dollar and credit cards are accepted everywhere in Iceland. This is why we decided not to carry too many Icelandic Krona (ISK) with us. We only exchanged 100 USD at the airport, which was comfortable enough for our cash expenses throughout the trip. I have to say that the exchange rate at the airport is a little low, so you can change money in the city center if you are going to go, not at the airport. We chose to arrange our first night's accommodation (we landed at around 01:00 anyway) from a place close to the airport and then set off immediately, and because we would not see a big city, we preferred to exchange it at the airport. It would be okay if we didn't change it. When you shop at a market or anywhere, you can pay in euro or usd, they give you the change in ISK.

Transportation and Car Rental from Keflavik Airport

You can reach Reykjavik city center from Keflavik airport by bus or shuttle. Since we prefer to tour Iceland by renting a car, we continued to the car rental section at the airport. Renting a car is the most common form of travel for foreigners coming to Iceland. For this reason, there are many car rental companies and each company has large vehicle fleets. You cannot reach the car rental section at Keflavik airport on foot, follow the “car rental” signs at the exit to reach the place where the bus to the car rental section departs. This service tool is free. In the car rental section, it drops and picks up passengers at 3 different points. You can learn from the directions in the shuttle vehicle or from the company you rented the vehicle at. We are the vehicle with which we will tour Iceland Lotus Car Rental We rented it. We got off the shuttle bus at the first stop and reached the car rental company easily.

Shopping at Keflavik Airport

If we go back to the airport; As in every airport, there are exchange offices, restaurants and cafes. When you get off the plane, I suggest you do your alcohol shopping at Duty Free before leaving the customs area. You can buy beer, wine and vodka duty-free from here, you will see that there are already many shoppers.

On the way back, if you want to eat or drink inside, the prices are the same as the prices in the city. Since the country is very expensive in general, I guess they did not need to raise the prices at the airport extra 🙂

Keflavik airport is generally a quiet, clean and beautiful airport. Being the gateway to Iceland already makes it pretty enough 🙂
