Is Ulubey Canyon the Second Largest Canyon in the World?

Uşak Ulubey Canyon is touted as the world's second longest canyon in terms of length, while Valla Canyon in Kastamonu is known as the world's second deepest canyon.

The longest canyon in the world The Grand Canyon, located in Arizona, USA, is 466 kilometers long. The length of Ulubey Canyon is 45 kilometers in some sources and 77 kilometers in some sources. As you can see, there is a lot of difference between 466 km and 90 km. For example, the length of the Charin Canyon in Kazakhstan is 82 kilometers, and the Tara Canyon in Montenegro is XNUMX kilometers. So which is the second longest canyon? If there is another reason why it is called "the second largest canyon", I could not find it, I leave the decision to you. A similar situation applies to Valla Canyon.

In summary, these two beautiful canyons are not in the second place, unfortunately, whoever made this claim first made a very unsupported claim.

Now that we have clarified this issue, we can now look at the details of this beautiful canyon.

Where is Ulubey Canyon and How to Go?

The canyon is located 36 kilometers from the city center of Uşak. Blaundus Ancient City There are only 20 kilometers between them. It is located approximately 2 kilometers from Ulubey district center. You will see the signs on the Uşak-Ulubey road.

There are 2 options to see the canyon in the center of Ulubey: the first is the glass terrace and the place where some facilities are located and marked as Ulubey Glass Terrace on the map that overlooks the canyon, and the second is the point where the nature park is located in the valley. I preferred to look down on the valley from where the glass terrace is. Since the canyon is already very long, the valley you see from the Blaundus Ancient City and the valley where the Clandras Bridge is located are the continuation of the canyon. Therefore, instead of seeing it from one place, you can see the canyon from different points.

The canyon is 500 kilometers from Istanbul, 400 kilometers from Ankara, 115 kilometers from Denizli, 115 kilometers from Pamukkale and 150 kilometers from Salda Lake. The closest active airport to the canyon is Denizli Çardak Airport, 111 kilometers from the canyon. You can reach the canyon by renting a car from the airport.

You can reach the canyon with your own vehicle or by taking the Ulubey buses from Uşak.

Ulubey Canyon Nature Park

Ulubey Canyon was declared as a nature park in 2013. 77 kilometers long canyon; Ulubey Stream harbors Banaz Stream and Dokuzsele Stream. Its depth varies between 50 and 170 meters. It is also known that many spring waters emerge from the canyon floor. These teas have turned the canyon into a natural paradise.

Unfortunately, I have read news that the Dokuzsele Stream, which passes through the canyon, cannot be fully opened to tourism due to the pollution. The reason for the pollution was that the chemical wastes of the Uşak Mixed-Leather Organized Industrial Zone were thrown into these streams. I could not find exactly how up-to-date this information is, I hope it is outdated and the necessary treatment facilities have been built for the streams.

Ulubey Canyon is located on the historical King's Road: Blaundus Ancient City, Ulubey Asarları Castle, Pepouza Ancient City, the center of the Christian Montanism sect, Duraklı Rock Tombs, Hasköy Asarı, Salma Stream, Bakraclı Creek, Historical Clandras Bridge and Hasköy Thermal Water. The settlement hosts an archaeological site.

There are many hiking paths both on the high part of the canyon where the view can be watched and at the level of the streams. If you want, you can plan a canyon trip to take a nature walk on these routes.

Uşak Ulubey Canyon Glass Terrace

Those who follow me on social media know that I don't like glass terraces built on natural wonders. I find these terraces incompatible with nature and ugly. Unfortunately, in recent years, one has been planted at the top of every canyon. Indeed, a glass terrace was built in the place with the most beautiful view of Ulubey Canyon.

Where there is a glass terrace, there are many facilities such as a restaurant and stalls selling local products. The terrace, which was put into service in 2015, overlooks the canyon from a height of 150 meters. Covering an area of 135 square meters, the terrace is made of 30 millimeter bulletproof glass.

Where to Stay in Ulubey Canyon? Is there camping?

In Ulubey Canyon, where the glass terrace is located, there are also bungalows and a camping area for accommodation. If you want, you can stay in the bungalows and benefit from all the facilities, or you can come with your own tent and camp against the view of the canyon.

What to Eat in Ulubey Canyon?

If you come to Ulubey Canyon where there is a glass terrace to look at it from above, there are many stalls where you can buy local products. You should definitely buy and taste the visual products from here, I liked it very much. Local products made by the hands of the women of Ulubey were really delicious. Let's take a look at a few of them;

Poppy Baklava – Zini Pastry

In the inner parts of the Inner Aegean, Central Anatolia and the Mediterranean, poppy, that is, opium, is widely grown and used in food. Uşak Ulubey is also one of the places where poppy is used in food. Zini Hamursuzu, the photo of which you can see below, is a kind of baklava with poppy. Since I bought the empty part of the tray, it was missing from the photo. But it is both delicious and durable because it does not go stale for a long time. If you come to Ulubey, you should definitely taste it. Zini comes from the tray you know, namely “sini”.

Just like poppy, chickpea is one of the agricultural products that is grown in abundance in the inner parts of the Inner Aegean, Central Anatolia and the Mediterranean. Various types of roasted chickpeas are made from chickpeas in Ulubey. Among the interesting varieties such as ginger, mastic gum, cinnamon, spicy roasted chickpeas, my favorite was mastic gum.
