One of the New Seven Wonders of the World: The Ancient City of Petra

Those who follow me closely know that before I embark on every journey, I have a dream point. Sometimes that dream point is the reason for the whole journey, sometimes it is just a stop. I was talking about Petra, whom I saw in a friend's photos and got shot.

Petra, UrdunA historical city in the depths of . It is a city that was found from the place where it was buried in the red sands, that is a wonder of both nature and human beings, which floods the valley where it lives.

From the moment we entered the Arab countries, I was trying to get used to the differences as well as the similarities to us. I managed to adapt to the Arab culture until I landed in Jordan with its bread stuck between our pita and lavash, tea brewed with lots of sugar, dust and dirt.

I liked their images of being very attached to their kings (it is possible to see large-sized photos of the king and the whole royal family all over the country), rich cuisine, warm-blooded people, and the sympathy and admiration they show towards Turkey and the people living in Turkey. I was respected because I came from Turkey.

Contrary to popular belief, Jordan is a very modern country.

We reached Petra at night, accompanied by rain. A village consisting of hundreds of hostels and hotels was established near the historical city. We are staying there too, it's a hotel at European prices but at Arab standards. The village is very lively, tour buses are full of local and foreign tourists, it is useful to go with a reservation in advance.

Early the next morning, we take our breath away at the gate of the historical city. The entrance fee is quite high but definitely worth it. While I paid 50 USD for Dinar the year I went, 2019 prices are around 127 USD.

From the entrance gate to the entrance of the valley, it is possible to travel by horse in return for a tip, the information about the horse transfer is included in the ticket price. However, horse owners do not leave you without a tip. It is possible to go for free with a little persistence 😉 We prefer to go on foot, photographing horses to feel the entrance of the city.

We are walking through a deep red chasm, even seeing the first ruins of the city makes me say that it was worth coming this far. After it is a fairy tale, after it is a dream… A city carved into the rocks in a deep valley…

It was included in the UNESCO's list of conservation in 1985, which is a good thing. Different cultures such as the Nabataeans and Romans lived in this city and developed the city. The aftermath is almost lost, until a Swiss archaeologist discovered the city in the 1800s. After the city, where Bedouins lived for a long time, was taken under protection, the Bedouins were removed from here and the city was opened to tourism. also in 2007 New Seven Wonders of the World took its rightful place among them. Petra means "rock" in Greek. The Romans must have given this magnificent red rock its name.

A city large enough to accommodate 20.000 people is carved into the valley. It is thought to be only 5% of the part that is currently above ground. It is almost as if a whole city with its living spaces, monasteries, theatre, tombs and squares is hidden among deep rocks.

At the very end of this city, there is the “end of the world” 😉 You should definitely not return from there without climbing 900 steps and reaching the monastery at the top of the valley. A glass of tea with fresh mint will relieve your tiredness.

There are many walking tracks in the valley, if you want to spare 2 days, you can visit all of these tracks. Moreover "night by petraI am sure that the historical city is open to visitors at night with the concept of ”, and will provide magnificent night photos. Due to time constraints, I could not get the chance to see Petra at night.

Since the ancient city and the new city are flooded with tourists, food and beverage prices are quite high. My suggestion is to bring food such as water, fruit and sandwiches with you. It takes a long time to visit the ancient city, so do not go hungry during this time.

Also, you'd better have a hat with you, there isn't much shade and you're walking for a long time. Make sure you have sunscreen and a hat, especially if you're going during the hot season!

A magnificent city to be seen to reach the end of the world; well-organized, well-restored… You can also add it to your dream list to see this city, which I enjoy seeing and being there.
