History of Isbank Museum

The beautiful building, where the İşbank Museum is located, served as a post office during the Ottoman period and was later used as the Ottoman İtibar-ı Milli Bankası building. After Ottoman İtibar-ı Milli Bankası merged with İş Bankası, it was used as İstanbul Branch of İş Bankası until 2004. In 2005, work started to be used as the İşbank Museum.

Upper Floor – Is Bank Museum

İşbank Museum consists of 3 floors. The first floor, that is, the upper floor, which is reached by stairs, tells about the processes that İşbank has gone through since its establishment. On this floor, it is possible to watch how not only İşbank but also the Turkish economy and cultural life have changed.

İşbank Museum – Establishment of İşbank

There is a lot of information in the museum, from the first İşbank headquarters building to its first advertisements, from money counting machines to the establishment story of Şişecam.

There are also many interactive screens in the museum, so you can easily access more detailed information about the subject you are curious about.

Is Bank Museum – Ataturk Hall

The part that impressed me the most on the upper floor of the museum was the Atatürk Hall. Atatürk's efforts for the establishment of İşbank, and his visionary perspective and support afterwards, once again reveal his social, economic and cultural wealth, not just a military genius.

The 1939 pocket diary produced by İşbank especially for Atatürk was the thing that upset me the most. The diary was produced, but it was never used after our father's death in November 1938.

The upper floor ends with the corridor where pictures of İşbank general managers and/or board members are displayed.

Ground Floor – 100th Anniversary of the National Struggle Exhibition

While on the ground floor of the İşbank Museum there was the first branch in Istanbul, the workshop area and the section where social responsibility projects were exhibited, this floor is now considered as the 100th Anniversary of the National Struggle.

100th Anniversary of the National Struggle

On 19 May 2019, we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Atatürk's arrival in Samsun. While visiting the exhibition opened in honor of this celebration, one can't help thinking that it would not be limited to such a small area and that we had a much larger "National Struggle Museum". As far as I know, although we have separate National Struggle museums in our provinces that participated in the National Struggle, unfortunately we do not have a comprehensive museum that explains the whole process. With this exhibition, İşbank may also pioneer the opening of such a museum.

100th Anniversary of the National Struggle

The 100th Anniversary of the National Struggle is divided into the following sections;

  • 1912-1922: The Ten Year War
  • Armistice and Occupation
  • Resistance and Kuvayi Milliye
  • Regular Army and Surface Defense
  • Law and Offense
  • Independence and the Republic

While visiting each section, they experienced how our country was once shared and how it was regained through struggles, with photographs and narratives. The exhibition, enriched with photographs from many domestic and foreign archives, is definitely worth seeing.

Basement Floor – Safe Room

When you come to the Isbank Museum, do not visit the ground floor and the upper floor. There is also a safe room in the basement. It is a must see place for those who are wondering what a real bank vault looks like.

The place to be discovered and the museum to visit in Istanbul are endless. If you happen to be in Eminönü and you have a few hours, the İşbank Museum is a good option to visit. It shows very well where both the bank and Turkey came from.

Our country has made incredible progress in museology in recent years, and beautiful museums have been opened all over Turkey. I hope more to come.
