What Is Hand (Cabin) Luggage?

First, let's define what cabin baggage is. Cabin luggage or hand luggage is the name given to the items that passengers can take with them on flights.

The critical point here is that hand luggage can fit in the overhead lockers inside the aircraft. Since the capacity of the overhead lockers is limited, the bags you can take with you are limited in size. These dimensions vary on the basis of airline company.

Carrying hand luggage gives you an economic advantage. How Does? While hand luggage is free in cheap airlines, you may have to pay an extra fee for the luggage you put under the plane. By traveling with hand luggage, you do not have to pay for extra luggage.

Cabin Baggage Rules

Airline companies' cabin baggage rules may differ. For this reason, before your flight, you should definitely check the cabin baggage rules of which airline you will fly with. You can easily access these rules from the websites of airline companies, all you have to do is type “xyz airline company cabin baggage rules” into Google. You can see a sample search result below.

Cabin Luggage Dimensions

Generally, the cabin baggage limit varies between 8 kg and 10 kg. The dimensions of the bag you will take into the cabinet should be as follows:

Height: 55 cm
Width: 40 cm
Depth: 20 cm

However, I would like to remind you again that these are generalized information and will vary according to the airline company.

Of course, some rules have been determined for the items you can take with you on the flight. While hand luggage rules may vary between airlines, they are common in general framework. There may be differences in weight and size between airlines, so it is recommended that you check the cabin baggage rules of the airline you bought your flight ticket from before your flight.

The materials that are prohibited to be taken in cabin baggage are generally set by international authorities. The main reason for the restrictions is security. After the September 11, 2001 attack on the Twin Towers in America, these restrictions and their implementation began to be made more carefully.

Cabin Baggage Liquid Restrictions

Liquid restrictions come first among cabin baggage restrictions. According to the rules effective from April 1, 2012; You may take a total of 100 liter of liquid with you in your hand luggage, provided that they are in containers of 1 ml each. These liquids should be kept in a transparent bag. Find the most suitable bags for freezer bags.

In order to achieve this, I carry all my cosmetic materials in containers of 100 ml or less. Now you can find products such as "travel type" shampoo, cologne and deodorant in many cosmetic markets. I usually buy these once and reuse the bottle when they're gone. If my trip is long and I think that 100 ml shampoo will not be enough, I find solutions such as carrying 2 100 ml shampoos.

If we list the products included in the 100 ml limit;

  • Water, syrup, liquor and all kinds of liquid beverages,
  • Cream, lotion, oil, shampoo, perfume, all kinds of cosmetics and make-up materials,
  • Toothpaste and all kinds of paste-like materials,
  • Any non-solid food such as jam, honey, yoghurt, molasses, tomato paste,
  • Prescription, medicines you have to use, and baby food can be taken in cabin baggage as much as they will need during the flight.

Cabin Baggage Other Prohibitions

No flammable, sharp, penetrating, crushing or damaging items are allowed inside the aircraft in hand luggage. The exception to this situation is the lighter, you can carry 1 lighter on you.

  • All kinds of scissors, pocketknife and knives are prohibited materials.
  • You cannot take any weapon, including toy guns, into the plane.
  • All kinds of sticks, including those used as sports equipment, are among the prohibited materials.
  • You cannot take the camping stove into the cabin. If you want to carry a camping stove by plane, you must give it under the plane. But you definitely cannot carry gas with you. On the way to Norway and Iceland, we bought our camping stove and bought gas from where we went.
  • You cannot take personal defense equipment such as pepper spray into the aircraft.
  • I have carried razor blades in my hand luggage many times and it hasn't been a problem. I guess they don't cause any problems because the razor size is short.
  • As a nail file, I have been carrying a nail file not exceeding 10 cm for a long time. No one has intervened for years.

Items I lost at the security check because I couldn't take them in my cabin baggage until today: Corkscrews, Swiss army knife, tripod, lots of jelly. I have nothing to say about the corkscrew and the Swiss army knife, I left them in the bag and got caught. Once on the way back from Italy, I had to leave the tripod at the security point because they said I couldn't take it with my cabin luggage. However, I have traveled many times with a tripod in my hand luggage afterwards. This situation may vary depending on the country, the airline company and even the psychology of the officer at the security point, so you should be careful.

Items You Can Take With You As Cabin Luggage

Don't worry if we won't be able to take anything with us. Of course, there are some things you can take with you as long as you follow the rules.

You can take your belongings such as handbags, cameras and cameras for personal use, tablets, laptop computers, strollers or pushchairs.

Tips for Traveling with Hand Luggage

Let's get to the tips for traveling with hand luggage that I will give you! These tips include both light travel and useful materials to take with you.

Carrying a Water Bottle or Flask

Drinking water will not be offered during the flight, especially if you are traveling abroad and prefer cheap airlines. If you don't want to spend money on water, be sure to have a flask or water bottle with you. Many airports have fountains where you can fill free drinking water, especially in Europe, this free water is very useful. You get rid of paying 1-3 euros for 4 bottle of water at the airport.

If you are flying from Sabiha Gökçen Airport, a grocery store opened on the exit floor before the second security check. Water or other drinks are the same price as outside markets. If you forgot to take a water bottle or water bottle with you, you can buy water from here and drink your water before the second security point and take the empty bottle with you.

Food from Lounge

If you are using the lounge before your flight, you can take any food and beverage from the lounge with you.

I have a foldable backpack that I bought years ago from Decathlon. This bag is mostly with me in my handbag. If I have things to take with me, I can immediately open this folded bag and use it as a 20 liter additional bag. If you also have small or medium-sized refrigerator bags with you, it will be easier for you to store and carry foods such as cookies and sandwiches from the lounge.

Items Purchased from Duty Free

In addition, you can take everything you buy from Duty Free as cabin baggage on the plane. However, when boarding the plane, you may be asked to document that you bought them from duty free, be careful not to lose the receipt and bag. The product you buy must be bagged by the sales representative and delivered to you by closing its mouth.

Travel Type Products

“How can you travel for days with a small bag?” Actually, the simplest answer to the question is that I use travel type products.

We learned above that we have to carry liquids in 100 ml containers. We need to carry all our cosmetics, health and beauty products in small containers.

Not just liquids. For example a comb, a towel, all of which take up little space and are small in size. Fiber towels or loincloth type towels, which you can find in many places, take up 1/4 less space than a regular towel.

Again, in the above section, I mentioned a backpack that was folded and remained small. I also use this small foldable bag when traveling around the city.

My clothes are also travel type. In other words, I choose clothes that do not require ironing, take up little space when folded, and can be used for more than one function. For example, outdoor pants that can be shorts; I travel in clothes such as skirts that I can use as skirts, dresses and pareoes.

If possible, I travel with only one shoe. Shoes can take up a lot of space in a bag, so I mostly go out with a single sneaker, although it varies depending on the climate and place I go. If it's a hot season, I just take an extra sandal with me.

Above all, I usually try not to carry too many backups of anything. What's the worst that can happen, if I'm missing, I'll pick it up wherever I go. By the way, in the places I go, I got cold and bought a jacket and fleece.

Food & Beverage Tips

Apart from all these, I always put dry snacks (such as nuts, pastries, biscuits) in my hand luggage to save money during travels. In fact, sometimes I put so much that they even come home with me at the end of the trip.

Although it depends on where I go, I take a few drinks of ground coffee and a filter with me because I can't find quality coffee every time I want it. Coffee lovers understand why I do such a thing.

I feel like I have given all my travel secrets in one post. I have nothing to hide anymore. Once you get the pleasure of traveling light, you will love it too, believe me. As you reduce the items in your life, you will feel that you have made more room for yourself, and you will become more free.

Let your wings be free!
