Addis Ababa a classic underdeveloped country capital. Tall buildings, wide streets and an untidy city. Dar es salam or Ulan Bator had a similar appearance at first glance. Addis Ababa places to visit I wanted to quickly wrap up my suggestions while I was just getting there.

Addis Ababa means "new flower" in Amharic, the official language of Ethiopia. It is usually abbreviated and used as Addis, but locals do not want it to be shortened.

Of course, the easiest way to go from Istanbul to Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa is by air. I also paid 350usd even though it was last minute. Turna.com It was around 03:30 at night when I landed in Ethiopia via Cairo via Egypt Airways. Addis Ababa I slept for 3 hours at the airport. Ideal for sleeping if you find the armless seats empty. But like any airport, it's cold here. I'm a little cold. The airport is only 5km from the city.

Addis Ababa Attractions

The company I arranged for Lalibela and Omo Valley tour in Addis gave a free city tour. When we said city tour, a vehicle and a driver-guide, we toured the places to visit in Addis Ababa. There really isn't much to do in Addis Ababa. Places to visit in the order I went;

Holy Trinity CathedralThe entrance fee is 150Birr, not worth it in my opinion. But it is one of the most important places of worship for this place.

National MuseumHere are the bones of the famous Lucy. It is definitely a must see to get to know the history of humanity. Entry is only 10Birr

Ethnography Museum, input 100Birr. The former royal palace was donated to the university and turned into a museum. I didn't find it very interesting, I wouldn't go though.

toto hill, a nice place to look at the city from 2900 meters. There is also a cathedral here, but I did not go because I did not want to give another 100-150Birr. I looked back at the view. Eucalyptus trees were planted on this hill years ago in a way that I could not find out, but since it harms the ecosystem, it is now being removed in a controlled manner and replaced with trees unique to this hill.

The oldest hotel in Addis Taitu Hotel It is also the meeting place of overlanders. It is also a place where you can have a local buffet for lunch. Meal price of 75birr per person. After that meal, I couldn't collect my stomach for 2 days, that's different 🙂

st. George's CathedralThis is one of the important religious centers. There is a museum behind it, 100Birr entrance is included in this price. I don't think there is anything impressive. But if you say you have time in Addis, you'll have a look. I did so.

MarketoYou can think of it like Mahmutpaşa, but it's a much more irregular and complex and larger version. There are beds, there are flowers, there are blacksmiths. There is a large mosque at the entrance of this place, and trade was mostly held by Muslims. I wanted to enter that mosque, but the women did not accept me (even though I had a headscarf). You know, mosques were open to everyone!

Red Terror MuseumIt is quite an impressive museum. You have to go to see the damage that terrorism has done to the country.

To.mo.ca coffee shopIt was the first coffee shop opened in Addis Ababa and it was opened by Italians. They prepare the coffee in Italian coffee machines, not with the traditional Ethiopian cooking method.

There is a big mosque at the entrance to Marketo, but they didn't let me in. Good luck if you want to enter.

At the end of a busy and sleepless day, we met with Altan, a friend of one of my followers, and went to a place where we could have local Abyssinian food. Yod Abysina There was both a local food and a local dance show at the venue. Tej I also had the chance to try their local drink. Also, tibs We tasted the meat dish called, but we just looked because the meat was so tough that we couldn't eat it. Thanks to Altan, he took great care of me in Addis.

No need to spend a lot of time in Addis Ababa. 1-2 days is enough. By the way, Addis' nightlife is also very popular, but I don't have any experience to pass on because I have no interest in nightlife 🙂

"Does he who reads a lot or travels a lot?" I started by saying, I am still looking for an answer. I travel after my dreams and share my experiences on my blog, newspapers and magazines. I love to travel, read, write and dream.

  1. hello : I've been in Ethiopia for about 1 month. where we live is the town of Kombolcha. 360 km north of Addis Ababa. The only thing visible during the journey is the pedestrian human and animal traffic of the vehicle traffic in Istanbul. that is, those who are constantly walking from one place to another. the elements that share the road are vehicles, people and animals. This is a city of complete absence. What we call markets are village grocers. But despite everything, people are positive. that's all for now….
