When we saw the “Kite Museum” sign by chance in the side street we took to get rid of the crowd in Üsküdar, we said “Oh, let's have a look here” and followed the signs. When you say kite, don't you go back to your childhood? While we were watching the directions, my husband and I immediately started talking about our childhood kite memories. We followed the directions, but we checked that the museum is closed. At that time, someone came to lower the awnings and said, “Would you like to visit the museum?” said. That one, it turns out, was the founder of the museum, Mehmet Naci Aköz.

He opened the museum for us and showed us around, he told us with enthusiasm. We also enjoyed listening. Let me tell you how Turkey's only kite museum was established and what kind of services it offers.

Üsküdar Mehmet Naci Aköz Kite Museum

Mehmet Naci Aköz, who is a complete kite lover and also the chairman of the Istanbul Kite Makers Association, established the first and still the only kite museum in our country in 1986, with a collection of kites he has collected from all over the world since 2005. Currently, the museum, supported by Üsküdar Municipality, has become a wonderful place where kite workshops are organized for both the museum and children. In the museum, there are kites with traditional lines from many countries, from China to Cambodia, from Indonesia to Germany.

With its collection consisting of more than 6 products (Kite, publications, materials and various objects) collected by the efforts of Mehmet Naci Aköz from 33 continents and 2500 countries; one of the 18 kite museums in the world Üsküdar Municipality Mehmet Naci Aköz Kite Museum Definitely a museum worth visiting.

At the same time, a Kite Library was established within the museum. Mehmet Bey, who compiles source books about kites as well as kites, exhibits these books in the museum.

Founder of Kite Museum: Mehmet Naci Aköz

Mehmet Naci Aköz is the founder of the Kite Museum. He likes kites very much and is engaged in this business commercially. He started to make and sell kites in 1980, and thus his kite adventure began. By organizing Turkey's first kite competition in 1984, he started to take the first steps of today's museum, perhaps unknowingly. He established Eyüp Kardeş Kite Makers' Association in 1986 and made the kite issue official in our country. When we came to 1997, he was designing and organizing the first international kite festival organized by IBB. Meanwhile, kite museums and kite festivals in many countries of the world, which we hear from himself, are contacting the kite festivals and they are starting to announce to the world that Turkey is also making efforts in kite. He collects kites from many festivals he attends, sometimes with his money and sometimes with the exchange method.

Kite School and Kite Workshop

The Kite Museum also serves as the “Kite School” where 200 students can make their own kites at the same time. Mehmet Bey says that one of the aims of the museum is to instill a love of kites in children. For this reason, the ground floor of the museum was designed as a kite making workshop.

It is a good idea to call and make a reservation before going to the museum.

Although it is a great museum especially for children, it is a must-visit museum for adults like us who continue to keep their inner child alive!
