There is an extensive metro-tramway network in Vienna. It is possible to find either a tram or a bus every 10 minutes, even to the farthest parts of the city.

The best part for tourists is that you are not asked for tickets in any of the transportation vehicles you take. There is neither a turnstile at the metro stops, nor a ticket seller at the bus stops… The local people use our monthly pass-shaped cards, and although rare, those who board without a card are fined during the controls. A similar practice exists in Amsterdam. Since the controls are made more frequently there, the number of ticket buyers is also high. There is no ticket control while getting on the vehicles, but if you are caught without a ticket during the checks on the vehicles, there is a 70 euro penalty.

Trams come and go empty late at night, but they leave every 10 minutes.

The more interesting part is that the people who live there don't abuse it and try to board without a ticket. There is still a queue in front of the ticket machines.

  1. Hello 🙂 we are actually going to Vienna and instead of participating in extra tours, we want to travel ourselves. I searched a lot on the internet, but I could not find how to go to the places that the tour takes. Liechtenstein Castle, Seegrotte underground lake, Mayerling hunting lodge, Heilingenkreuz Monastery, Baden spa city, Schönbrunn palace gardens are these places close to each other, if you have any information, I would be very happy if you could share them. Thank you

    • Hello,
For intercity transportation, you can look at bus or train options. You can use the site: Rome2rio.com
Schönbrunn palace is already within the city and can be reached by bus or tram.

  2. A few important tips for someone who has just returned from Vienna. They love to rip off tourists. Especially do not give 7 Euros to the cards sold as 34 museums, only 2 of them are nice because some of them are outside the city. buy the cheapest 11 euro ticket at shönburn palace. We felt fooled when we saw the Viennese people jogging and doing sports in the garden of the palace by showing the garden and the observation hill, which are open to the public and free of charge, as if they were paid, and bought a ticket for 18 euros. You don't need to pay that difference to see a few extra rooms. Fortunately, we didn't buy tickets for 30-40 euros, including the demonstration of making the apple dessert. You can enter the gardens of both palaces (belveder and shönbrun) without a ticket.
    2. I ate the dessert called apfelstrudel in demel and eehhh here is a taste. He who does not eat does not lose anything. There is a thin dough around the baked apple raisin sugar mixture. make sure my own apple cookies print a 10 on it.
    3. Kunt historie and nature historie museums are very nice. especially the sections in two large buildings facing each other. must see
    4. Freud museum, royal car museum or something is not essential.
    5. Museum entrance fees start from at least 9 euros. We bought a combined museum ticket with the first ignorance. We paid almost 2 TL for 400 people to enter the museum. The city is also seriously expensive, so take good money with you.
In the place called 6.nachmark, it is possible to find Turkish restaurants and products until 6 pm. foreigners' restaurants smell like pigs everywhere. so we ate at a Turkish restaurant open until late in the evening in schnitzel nachmarkta and it was very nice. There is even a doner shop next to the same restaurant. Doner is amazingly good and cheap. I recommend it too. Since we can't know that they don't cook both pork and chicken in the same oil, we didn't go to the figlmülleri. We ate the schnitzel in the Turkish restaurant and saw that the Turks also did this very well.
At the last stop of the red (U1) metro, at raumenplatz, there is a big ice cream shop called eis saloon as soon as you get off the metro and it is magnificent. there's already a queue in front of it…especially the hazelnut and strawberry ice creams are beyond wonderful. we just went to eat ice cream with three transfers.
. We bought tickets for transportation, but when they showed us an area that is free for its citizens and piled it on us, I stopped buying tickets..
The 7th city restaurant is also nice and it is possible to find many kinds of food. Also, all kinds of Turkish products are sold where Kent is located. The city center is incredibly expensive anyway.

    • Hello,

The things that everyone enjoys while traveling are different from each other. For this reason, I do not agree with your comments as if that museum is not necessary, even if this museum is not. There are definitely people who can take pleasure in museums or the contents of that museum.

I totally disagree with the ripping thing. Vienna and many European countries are not swindlers like us. That's why we got scammed and ripped off, your comments were unfortunate.

As for tickets, I've never seen Viennese boarding without a ticket. If you are caught without a ticket, there is a 200euro penalty.

Of course, Europe is expensive for us, 3TL has become almost euro, 1 for them is 3 for us. This is not the fault of European cities, but our economy management.

  3. It was very strange to me that the local administration in a civilized foreign country exploited the transportation system, which it had little control over the honesty of the people, as if a Turkish citizen had found a trophy, and also crowned it with photographs as if it were a feat. I am sure that he is aware of the fact that he is harming the image of all Turkish people by doing this uncivilized act. Such citizens of ours do not deserve to go there, nor do they deserve to be Turkish citizens.

    • Hello Jamal,

Blog is my blog, enjoyment is my pleasure. I have the right to freely share whatever I want. If you did not see the allusion in this post, please do not follow my blog.

Turkish citizens already have a very bad image abroad and I am talking to hundreds of foreigners to fix this image.

Fortunately, it is not up to you to decide who will become a Turkish citizen or who will go where.

  4. The penalty for being caught without a ticket has been €70, as of May 1, 2012. As of May 100, XNUMX, the penalty for being caught without a ticket has been €XNUMX.

  5. He also said that don't pay for transportation. Who but the Turks would think such simple calculations. I wish the check would come and you would pay the fine

  6. Definitely, definitely, "after all, there is no control", I say, do not refuse to buy a ticket. It is a different situation that you are both punished and disgraced. I definitely do not ride without a ticket…

  7. If you want to change the title of the article. Nowhere is transportation free. they cut the fine , you pay 100 times , accordingly .

  8. Just yesterday, three people dressed as normal passengers in the subway suddenly got up and started checking tickets, and now I've been fined 70 euros. I'm an ersamus student here, I just came here, I didn't even get my student card, I can apply after I get it, so I couldn't tell my troubles to the annoyed Austrian officials, even though I talked a lot as I waited. The man cut the 70 euro fine without looking my way. I wanted everyone to know 🙂

    • Get well soon, we encountered a similar situation in a European country. It turns out that there was a lot of control, so everyone was getting on with a ticket 🙂

  9. hello, i will go to vienna in june i have schengen visa. I want to move to bratislava from there for 1-2 days. but slovakia is not a schengen country… do i have to get a slovakia visa?

    • Hello Slovakia has been a Schengen member since 2007 and has the right of free movement. You can easily pass from Vienna to Bratislava. Finding a train can be a bit of a hassle yet and it can take a long time. I suggest you choose buses instead. They are both cheaper and go faster. They are already very close to each other.

  10. Hello there.
I will go from Milan to Vienna by train. As far as I know, the train journey takes about 11 hours, so I plan to go in the evening. Does anyone have any information about trains on this line? Is the interrail ticket valid? And is there any problem if I don't book in advance?
    Thank you in advance.

    • The train can be both long and expensive, so I suggest you search for flights from Milan or Bergoma instead.

  11. I'm going to Bratislava. I think the closest and most convenient way is via Vienna. I heard that there is a bus service from Vienna airport to Bratislava. Does anyone have any information?

    • There are continuous services between Vienna and Bratislava. You'll see it when you get off the plane and head for the exit. They are well organized as they are so close.

  12. It is useful to know that the monthly ticket is 50 €, but if you are caught without a ticket, the fine is 70 €, your Turkish passport will give you the image of an "untamed immigrant" rather than a "tourist", and if you are caught at the ticket control, it will have a result beyond avoiding a penalty.

Above all, Vienna is a city with a great public transport system.

    • After this article, I received similar warnings from a few more people, Musa. Thank you for your information.

  13. they also punish tourists - you are one of the lucky ones - especially if you are Turkish they do not give a damn - it is announced to those who will travel by public transportation in Vienna

  14. hi,
I was given a 1 month temporary wize from the slowakya consulate, it was not said that you would turn it into a schengen visa when I went there, I wonder if this wize situation will cause a problem between awstria and slowakya? i'm planning to move from wiyan to bratislava first but I'm open to any help =)
By the way, did money payments start to credit cards seriously?

    • Hello Tolga,

If you can document that you will stay in Slovakia, I don't think it will be a problem, but I still advise you to get clear information from the consulate in Vienna.

I don't know about paying visa or tuition by credit card, if that's what you're asking :)

  15. slm
friends, the company has started to pay back their ticket fees, check your credit card accounts, this may take a while. It is cheap and you have seen many places. It is very easy to get from Vienna to Bratislava. However, I can give you practical information. There are two train stations in Vienna, these are Westbanhof and Sudbanhof. Trains to Bratislava usually depart from Sudbanhof. There are trains departing from Sudbanhof every hour. There are also bus services between Vienna and Bratislava. If you want to get more detailed information, write to this page and I can give you the necessary help on a voluntary basis.

  16. hi,
I am planning to go to bratislava from istanbul, but there is no direct flight because Skyeurope Airlines company, which operates direct flights, went bankrupt; so I'm planning to go to Bratislava via Vienna. Can you advise which airline company is affordable? thanks

    • Hello,
5 of our tickets were burned because that company went bankrupt, don't ask 🙂 I'm looking for an alternative too. I'll share it with you when I find it.
