In 2008, I set out to go to Paris and found myself in Stockholm and spent a few days visiting the city. My Stockholm experiences Stockholm travel notes I compiled below. I also made my first flight with Ryanair, one of the cheapest airlines in Europe, thanks to this trip.

First Ryanair Experience

I want to go to Paris, but at that time there were very few flights from Turkey! At that time, my friend Gülçin, who was traveling the most, said: “Why are you looking for a direct Istanbul-Paris ticket, get out of Turkey first, you can find cheap tickets to Paris from many places”.

Search for it, then I found the Stockholm-Paris flight from Ryanair for 6 Euros, yes, you read it right, for 6 Euros. Istanbul – Stockholm with the money of that time, 350 TL, which was 1.80 Euros, 194 Euros. Stockholm – Paris 6 Euros with Ryanair, return Basel – Istanbul 187 TL, ie 159 Euros. High on hitting today's prices but good then. I made a plan to find a cheap flight from Istanbul to Stockholm, spend a few days in Stockholm and then move on to Paris. It was much cheaper than going directly to Paris, and I added another country.

There are a few things to consider when flying with Ryanair. First of all, the bag you will take with you will definitely not be more than the weight stated in the ticket rules. No possibility to buy extra handbags. That's why I put my hair dryer in my coat pocket and boarded the plane 🙂 Secondly, online check-in is absolutely necessary, I remember there was an extra fee if you went to the counter.

When I discovered Ryanair for such a cheap price, I later made some ridiculous European routes, which will be the subject of another article.

This is how I set out for my first northern country, Sweden. Afterwards, the love of the north 🙂 I went to Norway, Denmark, Iceland after a long time…

Stockholm Travel Notes

Stockholm is the capital of the civilized country of the north, Sweden. Sweden has a population of 10 million, with 2 million living in the capital, Stockholm.

The city is built on 14 islands in the Baltic Sea, connected by bridges. The city center is a part of 3-4 islands.

Due to Sweden's refugee policy, Stockholm is a fairly cosmopolitan city for its size. You can find many people from different nationalities here. If you've watched Netflix's popular TV series Caliphate lately, you can get a little more insight into what I mean.

In Stockholm, or rather in northern countries, people are generally tall. Okay, you may be tall, but how can women's legs be so long and their legs so columnar? People get bored. Isn't it a pity for us?

English proficiency is very high in Sweden. Almost everyone speaks English as a second language and it is very easy to understand because they speak very smooth English without an accent.

I reserved 3 days to visit Stockholm, it should be at least 2 days. Although the city is small, there are many places to walk and see.

You can use the metro line or sea routes to reach the city center. The rail system is quite common, traffic is not a big problem since there are not many people in the city anyway. Cycling is also used for transportation, although it is not an Amsterdam or Copenhagen.

It is possible to reach the city center from the airport by bus.

If you are going to northern countries, I suggest you go preferably in the summer months. Unless you're going to see the northern lights or something, you don't want to walk around in the cold. I remember it being cold, even though I went at the beginning of October and the weather was quite sunny.

In the photo you can see that I pulled my coat up to my neck from the “cold”

I went to a Turkish Pide Restaurant and a Mexican restaurant in Stockholm. Actually, Swedish Meatballs (it is said that they learned it from the Turks) must be tasted!

If you want cheap food, McDonalds or doner shops are waiting for you.

In Stockholm you can travel with the comfort and confidence of being in a northern country. It only bothered me a little to see homeless people at subway stops at night, but I don't remember that there was a problem. And those subways smelled so bad of pee, I hope it still doesn't.

Accommodation in Stockholm

Accommodation in Stockholm

Stockholm is an expensive city as we are used to in northern countries and cities. Suitable accommodation options are either outside the city or in boat hotels close to Gamla Stan.

I also stayed in boat hotels. At that time, the Euro rate was 1.8 🙁 166 Euros for the room rate.

Places to Visit in Stockholm

You can easily visit the following places in Stockholm in 2 or 3 days.

  • gamla stan: Of course, the old city center is at the top of the places to visit in Stockholm.
  • Town hall: It is one of the must-see places in Stockholm, as in many other European cities.
  • Royal PalaceI: Again, as we are used to in many European cities, there is a changing of the guard ceremony here as well.
  • Stockholm metro: There are metro stops where you can visit like a museum.
  • boat tour: The best way to visit the city from the sea.
  • Normalm Zone: This is the new downtown district. They stand back to back with Gamla Stan, with large squares, shopping malls, walking paths, shops.
  • Skansen: Open-air history museum.
  • Vasa Museumi: A sunken warship was removed from under the sea and turned into a museum. Be sure to see it.
  • Abba Museum: Right near Skansen
  • sodermalm: Stockholm's hipster quarter. Shops, cafes…
