Belgrade Travel Guide

What you need to know before going to Belgrade, such as the best time to go in Belgrade, how many days are required to visit Belgrade, and you will find answers to all the questions I received about Belgrade in the Belgrade travel guide section of my article.

Should Turkish Citizens Get a Visa to Go to Belgrade?

Serbia, of which Belgrade is the capital, does not require visas from Turkish citizens. As of June 2022, he does not want a passport either. You can easily go to Serbia, and therefore to Belgrade, only with your Republic of Turkey chip/new identity card.

How to get from Turkey to Belgrade?

How to Get to Belgrade?
How to Get to Belgrade?

Turkish Airlines, Air Serbia and Pegasus Airlines have flights to Belgrade from Istanbul. The flight takes only 1 hour 45 minutes. In addition, charter flights take place from holiday resorts such as Antalya during the summer period. The only problem with flights is that since Belgrade is a very popular travel route, finding cheap tickets can be a bit difficult. You have to follow the campaigns closely to catch it.

How Many Days Should You Allocate for Belgrade Trip?

Belgrade is a quiet, easy to navigate, relaxed city. You can visit the places on the list of places to visit in Belgrade by taking a few days. 2 days is not bad, 3 days will be great, if you have more time, you will have time to go to nearby places such as Novisad, Karlowitz.

What is the Best Time to Go to Belgrade?

I was in Belgrade in the cold days of January. In summer or spring, a city with a lively nightlife will welcome you. Best time to go to Belgrade summer and spring months instead of winter months. Danube and Sava shores are lively in the summer months, it is not possible to see this activity in winter.

Is Belgrade As Cheap As It Used To Be?

One of the most asked questions during my second trip to Belgrade was “Is Belgrade as cheap as it used to be?” it happened. Unfortunately my answer is no. While 4 TL was 5 Dinar 1-48 years ago due to the rapid depreciation of the Turkish Lira and almost zero inflation in Serbia, now 1 TL is 12 Dinars, that is, our currency has lost its value against almost 4 times Dinar. Therefore, everything that used to be very cheap is now at Istanbul prices or a little more expensive.

Should we take Euros or Usd with us when we go to Belgrade?

If you are going to bring foreign currency with you when you come from Turkey; The Euro rate was better than the Usd rate, I suggest you bring Euros. There are many exchange offices around Knez Mihailova Street.

By the way, some places in Belgrade do not accept credit cards, so I suggest you ask before entering the venues and have cash Dinars with you.

How is the City Transportation & Public Transport in Belgrade?

Let's go in order;

  • A bus called “Aero Bus” comes from Belgrade Airport to the city center.
  • There is a widespread bus and tram network in the city. When you want to go anywhere, if you create a route by choosing public transportation from the Google Maps application, you can see information such as the bus number.
  • If you do not have a bus ticket, you can pay the driver in cash.
  • You can go to Zemun District from the city center by city buses.
  • Taxi in the city is a bit of a problem. There is a local taxi app like Uber – Bitaksi, it's called Cargo. You need to have a Serbian phone line to use the application. If you do not have Cargo application, choose Pink or Naxis branded taxis, you can pay by credit card and their prices are affordable. Apart from these, you run the risk of getting ripped off when you take a taxi, so it is not recommended.

Where to Stay in Belgrade

Belgrade has accommodation options for every budget. The first time I went, I stayed at Mosaic Hostel for 12 USD, the second time I went, we stayed at the Central Point Hotel, the nightly price starts from 99 Euros.

Accommodation searches in any city Booking.com I'm doing it over. I choose the location, features and price range I want and choose one of the highly rated places, I rarely regret it. You can decide on a place to stay in a similar way.

How We Handled the Internet Business in Belgrade

When we went to Belgrade, we bought a 5GB internet package, a GSM line valid for 7 days, and paid 300 Dinars to stay connected to the internet. I don't know if it was due to our operator, but there was only 3G and internet reception was quite weak.

Almost all places have wifi, if you do not want to buy an internet package, using wifi is also an option.

MOST TRAVELING HACK: You might think, I need the internet to look at my destinations on Google Maps or Maps.me. In fact, in both applications, you can download the map “offline”, so you can use it even if you do not have internet.

What to Eat in Belgrade?

What to eat in Belgrade
What to eat in Belgrade

You can get an introduction to food and drink by tasting Belgrade's pastries. All right "Serbian for "bakery". You can buy a variety of pastries at very economical prices. These are always fast food places, almost all of them have bar stools and narrow tables. They eat immediately and continue without sitting for a long time. I tried a few and they were all very fresh and delicious. Of course, we are very close in taste. It is also possible to find Bosnian pastries in Pekaras.

Apart from pastries, dried meat, quince, Serbian meatballs (cevapcic), Pljeskavica hamburger are the flavors you must taste in Belgrade. What to eat and where to eat in Belgrade my spelling is like a Belgrade food and beverage guide, be sure to check it out.

Things to Know Before Going to Belgrade

I have some notes for your convenience when you go to Belgrade, I hope it will be useful for you too:

  • In many places, indoor smoking is allowed, some of the cafes and restaurants are separated from smoking areas, but in the same environment, half of them has cigarettes and half does not.
  • As in many European cities, the city is almost completely dead on Sundays. Try not to make an important schedule for Sunday.
  • According to The Times, Belgrade is Europe's nightlife city. There will be no information about nightlife in this article, but if you are interested in nightlife, I suggest you go in spring or summer, not in winter.
  • Serbian girls are really beautiful. I have nothing else to say.
  • There is no negative attitude towards Turks, this is a city with a lot of visitors from Turkey. Relax, no one will taunt you for no reason unless you're negative. On the contrary, they approach those coming from Turkey very warmly.

Is there a Turkish-speaking guide in Belgrade?

Since many tourists from Turkey go to Belgrade, there is a very positive attitude towards Turkish citizens, and you can get Turkish guidance service if you need it. making our guide Veljko Antonijevic He speaks Turkish very well and knows Belgrade like the back of his hand. Moreover, he helped us a lot, not only in guidance, but also in everything, I'm sure he will help you if you need it. I linked his Instagram account to his name, you can reach him there.

I would like to convey my own experiences for the list of places to visit in Belgrade. You can walk everywhere except Zemun District, Avala Hill and Ada Ciganlija, which are on this list. A great city for those who love to walk, explore the streets. a distinct pleasure.

1. Republic Square (Republic Square)

2. Knez Mihailova Street

Knez Mihailova Street
Knez Mihailova Street

The street stretching from Republic Square to Belgrade Fortress (Kalemegdan) is the most popular shopping street in Belgrade. Knez Mihailova Street. You can find nice cafes and restaurants in and out of the side streets of this always lively street. The closer you get to Kalemegdan, the more cafes and restaurants are available. This is a colorful street where you can find street performers, arcades, peddlers, whatever you look for. In short, we can say that Istiklal Street of Belgrade.

3. Kalemegdan

Kalemegdan
Kalemegdan

Continuing straight from Knez Mihailova Kalemegdan will appear in front of you. Kalemegdan was named after the Ottomans, actually the Belgrade Fortress. Its name also comes from Kale Meydan, it has approached Serbian in time. It is the most touristic place of the city, which includes a military museum, a church, a clock tower, a watch tower from the bastions, and a large green area.

It is a place that attracts everyone with its view overlooking New Belgrade, where you can see the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers, where locals as well as tourists come to take a weekend walk. Of course, when I saw the Istanbul Gate, I liked it very much, I always like it abroad when I see traces of us 🙂 The museums inside the castle are closed during the winter period, you can only enter as a private group with a reservation in advance. Before you go, I suggest you to review the Belgrade Fortress site to get information.

If you are in spring or summer, you can go down to Beton Hala by the river from Kalemegdan, rent a bicycle and take a stroll along the riverside.

4. Student Square

Student Square
Student Square

You can reach the Student Square with a two-minute walk from Knez Mihailova Street. The building with the red window in the photo above is the dean's office. This area is a place where mostly students hang out. It is one of the lively districts of the city, where you can find many cafes and restaurants, and photo corners in the side streets.

5. Cathedral of St. Sava

Saint Sava Cathedral
Saint Sava Cathedral

Saint Sava CathedralThe biggest church in Belgrade. When I came in 2016, there were many piers inside, but when I went in 2021, most of the piers were removed and the interior is equipped with very ostentatious wall decorations. Another feature of this church is its similarity with Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.

6. Sveti Sava Market

Sveti Sava Market
Sveti Sava Market

If you exit the St. Sava Cathedral and wander around the back of the cathedral, you will see the fixed market place. Many places in Belgrade have these fixed markets. Its name is Saint Sava. Inside, there is everything from fruits and vegetables to fish, from second-hand items to hardware. Homemade jams, honey, pickles… Market places are one of the places that I enjoy seeing, and the most must-see places in a city in my opinion.

7. Nicola Tesla Museum

Nikola Tesla Museum
Nikola Tesla Museum

Coming out of Sveti Sava Nicola Tesla Museum'What can you continue to do. Nicola Tesla is a source of pride for Serbs. That's how it should be. Some of the discoveries of Tesla, who is a complete genius, still have not been implemented. Before you go, I suggest you take a look at the Nicola Tesla Museum site, you should definitely take a guided tour of the museum, so you can witness some small experiments. Guided tours are every 2 hours, if you don't go on time, you may have to wait a long time.

The museum entrance fee is in cash and the price for 2021 is 800 Dinars, about 10 Usd. Museum visiting hours are listed below.

At the end of Taj Magdan park St. Mark's Church If you ask me, it is more beautiful than St. Sava in terms of architecture.

If you continue ahead of the Taj Megdan Serbian History MuseumYou will see . We did not go, if you are interested in museums, you can stop by.

11. Skadarjia District

Skadarjia District
Skadarjia District

The city used to be the most bohemian, nowadays one of the most touristic places. Skadargia If you are approaching the evening on your way to the region, you can have dinner and night entertainment here. to your head You can sit in one of the taverns called taverns.

They say that there are no places without reservation during busy periods, but when I went in winter, the places were empty because the season was low. You can spend a pleasant evening in the Kafana accompanied by live music, various appetizers, Serbian wine or rajikas.

The most popular are capes; Šešir Moj (Old hat), Tri Sesira (Three Hats), Dva Jelena (Two Deer). There is an open market place at the entrance of the Skadarjia district, if you haven't been to Sveti Sava, you can stop by here.

12. Zemun District

Zemun Region
Zemun District – View from the Gardosh Tower

Zemun Region It was a region where fishermen's shelters used to be and where the troubled types of the city lived. Now, those fishermen's shelters have been restored and turned into stylish restaurants. There are many buses running from the old city center to Zemun District. If you ask for a bus from Zelenivenad square to Zemun, you will reach Zemun in a maximum of half an hour.

Zemun Region
Zemun Region

I recommend you to go to Zemun District in the afternoon, stroll through the streets with Austrian architecture and take pictures, go up to the Gardoş Tower at sunset and watch the sunset, and have a pleasant meal at one of the restaurants by the river. Şaran Restaurant was the place we chose for our first visit, it is definitely a recommended place as a fish restaurant. Do not return from Belgrade without seeing the Zemun district.

13. Gardos Tower

If you climb up the hill from Zemun through the nostalgic streets, you will reach the Gardoş Tower. The tower has a very nice view of Belgrade. I recommend you to climb the hill and watch this view.

Gardos Tower

14. Avala Hill & Avala Tower

Now we are going to another hill of Belgrade. Avala Hill is located half an hour from the center of Belgrade. You reach the hill by passing tiny villages and vineyards. At the top of the hill, there is a monument in the form of the Unknown Soldier Monument.

A little below the monument is the Avala Tower, which is 204 meters high. This is a television tower. It's now a watchtower for Belgrade from the top. The entrance fee to the tower is 2021 Dinars for 300.

15. Ada Ciganlija

Ada Ciganlia
Ada Ciganlia

One of the places that surprised me the most in the list of places to visit in Belgrade was Ada Ciganlija. They formed an islet in the Sava river. Inside, there is everything you can look for, from tennis courts to jogging tracks, from many beaches to various restaurants. The water, which I thought would be cloudy because it was river water, looked pretty good too. There is a restaurant in Ada Ciganlija that I would say do not miss, Kafanica Na Adi Bakara. The appetizers and meat dishes are amazing. You can find many dishes of the local cuisine, and the owner of the restaurant is a true Turkey fan. Olive oil brings olives from Ayvalık.

16. Concrete Still

Concrete Still
Concrete Still

You have a very important reason to go to Belgrade in summer. Beton Hala area, located on the banks of the Sava river and just below Kale Megdan. Old warehouses have become new restaurants and bars. From international cuisine to local restaurants to cocktail bars, we have everything you need. You can also come just for a walk and a walk at sunset.

17. Sava Mala

Sava Trowel
Sava Trowel

If you continue from Beton Hala to the interior of the Sava instead of the Danube, the place you will reach is the Sava Mala region this time. You can ride a bike, walk, sit on the steps and watch the scenery, or dine at one of the beautiful places by the river.

18. Boat Trip on Danube and Sava

Boat Tour on Danube and Sava
Boat Tour on Danube and Sava

Is it possible not to take a boat tour in a city with a river running through it? We preferred a boat that departs at sunset. Departing from the Beton Hala region, the boat goes to the point where the Sava and Danube meet and goes to the inner parts of Sava Mala and returns to the starting point. An activity of about 1.5 hours. There are different options with or without food. Tours without meals are 15 Euros.

At the junction of Sava and Danube, there is a pontoon, if you make a wish there, it will come true. it's happening.

FK Crvena Zvezda Stadium – Red Star Stadium

Yugoslavia was successful in many sports when it was at its strongest. The Red Star Team was one of these symbols of success, one of the oldest and at the same time the most successful football clubs in Central and Eastern Europe. The legendary stadium of this team, which is known to everyone who is more or less interested in football, can be visited as a touristic spot.

If you have spared time for Serbia; You can find many options such as Novisad, Karlofça, Drvengrad village, which was used as a movie set by Emir Kusturica and now opened to tourism, ski resorts, different routes for trekking activities.

  1. We are in Belgrade next week. This guide will be incredibly useful. What I want to ask is, should we exchange EURO in Belgium or buy Belgrade dinars from Turkey? 🙂

  2. I think there was a mistake in the name of the Usce tower. Gardos is there as far as I know. I remember it as a mall in Usce 🙂

  3. Hello, Ms. Sevil, I watched the speech you made on YouTube, and I'm a new traveler, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Macau, Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Serbia. I've always gone with tours. I don't have a very good job, but I work a lot of time to save money. As you said, I am very short of myself. I will go to Belgrade for 1 week in May. I would like to meet you.
