Briefly About Safranbolu

First, let's make a brief introduction to Safranbolu. Safranbolu is a Black Sea city where you can fully see the nomadic culture, with a much older history, and one of the important stops of the Silk Road with the saffron trade. Depending on the province of Karabuk, the city is more famous than Karabuk. This beautiful city, which became the center of attention of both local and foreign tourists, awaits its guests who love history and nature, after it was included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list in 1998.

If you ask how to get to Safranbolu; If you go from Safranbolu, Istanbul in the direction of Ankara, take the Gerede exit and go via Karabük. The distance between Istanbul and Safranbolu is approximately 390 km.

Safranbolu is one of the rarest and most expensive spices in the world. safran from the plant. Safranbolu, which is one of the few places where saffron grows in our country, has always been economically strong thanks to saffron.

It is one of the must-see places in Turkey with Safranbolu Houses, Old Bazaar and Yörük Village. If you haven't been to Safranbolu yet, I strongly suggest you make a plan as soon as possible.

For more information Safranbolu places to visit Be sure to check out my post.

Safranbolu consists of 3 main parts. Bağlar, Kıranköy and Çarşı.

  • Kıranköy: the section where non-Muslims lived before the exchange,
  • Bonds: the section where the vineyard houses used to be, because it is high in the summer months,
  • Bazaar: the section where the historical city known as "Safranbolu Old Bazaar" is located, as you can see in classical Safranbolu photographs.

The most popular of these sections is, of course, the bazaar section. Eating and drinking in Safranbolu My suggestions are mainly in this section.

What to Eat in Safranbolu?

Safranbolu is a city famous for its beautiful Ottoman houses as well as saffron and Turkish delight. More based on pastries Safranbolu cuisineIt can be quite challenging for those who pay attention to what they eat and those who eat healthy, don't say they didn't warn you! When it comes to kebabs, pastries and pitas, the list goes on. Safranbolu dishes Let's take a look at the list together. I have personally experienced the Safranbolu dishes listed below when I have been to Safranbolu at different times, and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Akçaabat Meatball Break at Türsan Facilities on Safranbolu Road

Before going to Safranbolu, I strongly recommend that you take a break at Türsan facilities on the Istanbul-Ankara road and eat Akçaabat Meatballs. Fast and good service, delicious food, reasonable price all rolled into one.

Also, as you will pass through Bolu on the way from Istanbul to Safranbolu, you will see many bolu restaurants on the side of the road. You can choose one of these for lunch.

Let's come to Safranbolu food, which is our main topic….

Amulet of Manti: Peruhi

Peruhi
What to eat in Safranbolu? – Peruhi

Peruhi is a kind of ravioli, the difference from the ravioli we know is that it is made in the form of an amulet and cheese is added instead of minced meat. The Peruhians I ate in Safranbolu are usually served on copper plates and with a very nice presentation. It should not be forgotten that it is served with plenty of butter. A good option for those who like ravioli type dishes.

Where to eat Peruhi in Safranbolu? If you ask, one of the places I would recommend is Safranbolu Sofrası. As tourism increased in Safranbolu, many restaurants where you can eat local dishes were opened. When I went to Safranbolu for the first time years ago, there were a few places in the bazaar, but now a lot of places have been opened. We visited Peruhi on our last Safranbolu trip. Safranbolu Table We ate at the restaurant. The taste and presentation were also very good.

For me, the best ravioli in Turkey is the ravioli I ate at Hala's Place in Sinop. Neither Kayseri ravioli nor anyone else could pass it.

Meat leaf wrapping

Meat leaf wrapping
Meat leaf wrapping

You have never seen such tiny wraps as in Safranbolu. The wraps made in the form of tiny cubes draw attention with their taste as well as their appearance. Delicious vine leaves also have a share in this flavor. I really don't understand who is trying to wrap such small leaves, good luck to those who do. Good luck to us.

Baglar Soda

Bağlar region used to be the plateau of Safranbolu. They named the local soda made in Safranbolu after this region. Bağlar Gazoz, a little more sugary than Çamlıca gazoz. Those who like to try local soda should definitely try it. You can find Bağlar Gazoz almost everywhere in Safranbolu.

Walnut Spread

Walnut Spread

It was the first meal I ate when I first went to Safranbolu. publication. Yay, the noodles you know, you can easily find homemade noodles in Safranbolu. They cook this noodle like pasta and serve it with walnuts and butter. When walnuts are natural, noodles are natural, and butter is natural, it tastes good, but it is not a very interesting taste in my opinion. Don't be angry, people from Safranbolu, it's an ordinary dish that can be found everywhere.

Apple tea

You should definitely drink apple tea at Arasta Kahvesi in Yemeniciler bazaar located in Safranbolu Old Bazaar. Sour apple, thyme, rosehip are boiled together. It is served with honey. The presentation is just as good as the taste. I haven't tried this tea anywhere else and I loved it.

Saffron Tea

Saffron Tea

Safranbolu got its name from the Saffron plant. I actually expected more use of saffron in cooking, but it doesn't seem like much. Tea made from saffron is a very famous yellow tea in Safranbolu. I couldn't compare the taste to anything, but you have to try it while you're there.

You can drink Safran Tea in many places in Safranbolu bazaar. If you want to drink your tea in a historical mansion while you are in Safranbolu, you can drink it in the garden of the District Governor's House, where you can visit the interior of Hıdırlık Hill.

Zerde Dessert

Although Zerde dessert is not a flavor unique to Safranbolu, you can find it on the menu of many restaurants in Safranbolu as it is colored with saffron. There is no dessert other than Turkish delight on the list, so I thought I'd add that. Zerde is not the kind of dessert I like. It may be of interest to those who like light desserts.

Safranbolu Bagel

Safranbolu Bagel
Safranbolu Bagel

Safranbolu bagel, a thinner bagel than we know, the original without sesame and a harder bagel. Breakfast is also served in hotels. If you have eaten Kastamonu bagel, it is prepared in the same way. I don't call bagel without sesame, so my favorite is the bagel with sesame.

Historical Bagel Bakery
Historical Bagel Bakery

If you ask where to eat simit in Safranbolu, when you enter the old city center of Safranbolu, you will see the Historical Simit Bakery. You can taste Safranbolu pastries such as simit and twist in this bakery. Every time I go to Safranbolu, I always check to see if the historical bagel oven is still in place. Thank goodness it's still there.

Safranbolu Turkish Delight

Turkish Delight in Safranbolu
Turkish Delight in Safranbolu

One of the first things that come to mind when Safranbolu is mentioned is Turkish delight. It is said that Safranbolu's Turkish delight is very good because of its lime-free water. Turkish delights with pomegranate, saffron, coffee and fig are my favourites. It occurred to me that you will say what is left; especially Imren's chocolate delight should not pass without trying.

Although İmren and SafranTat are the oldest Turkish delight shops in Safranbolu, many Turkish delight shops, large and small, will cut your way and offer you Turkish delight. I usually fill my stomach with Turkish delight served on the street.

Turkish coffee

Turkish coffee
Turkish coffee

Turkish coffee does not have a special trick for Safrabolu, but there are many places where you can enjoy coffee in Safranbolu's environment.

I would recommend the Turkish coffee served in a coffee pot in the courtyard of Cinci Han, but on my last visit, they asked for 1 TL for the courtyard entrance, and there was live music with a very high pitch. I think it spoiled the atmosphere, I wish they hadn't been involved in such an event.

You can sip your coffee against the view of Safranbolu from Hıdırlık Hill.

My favorite place is Pool Konak, where you can have your coffee by the pool. Their presentations are also very good.

Observation

Pancakes made in Safranbolu are hand-rolled and made with plenty of butter in the nomadic style. Pancake, which is the easiest dish of nomads, is already famous in many places in our country.

Bestami Pancake can be a good option to eat pancakes in Safranbolu.

Kastamonu Style Iskender

Kastamonu Style Iskender
Kastamonu Style Iskender

Kastamonu style iskender, I think, has just come out because I had never come across it before when I went to Safranbolu. They pour tomato sauce on the minced pancake and serve it with yogurt on the side. I think we can call it a liar Alexander. I can't say that I like it very much, it was better to eat pancakes as pancakes.

We ate at Iskenderi, Safranbolu Sofrasi, it's very easy to find, just below the square. There are similar restaurants next to each other in the same row.

Bending

Bending

Pita lovers should definitely taste the twist in Safranbolu. It's actually a covered pita. There are different varieties such as walnut, spinach, minced meat. Off, let's eat it though.

We ate at Kadıoğlu Şehzade Restaurant, it was spinach and minced meat and it was very good, it's one of the flavors that stays on my palate. Bending is on the menu of almost every restaurant. In addition, many bagel ovens in Safranbolu Old City make bending, you can buy from them.

Kuyu Kebab

Kuyu Kebab
Kuyu Kebab

I think Safranbolu's only famous meat dish is Kuyu Kebab. Although the well kebab made from lamb meat cooked in the well is good, my favorite in this type of kebab is Enver Usta in Denizli. I still don't know about him.

We ate the well kebab at the restaurant called Kadıoğlu Şehzade Sofrası. Another option is Çevik Köprü Restaurant on the way to Yörük Village.

Walnut Baklava

Baklava with walnuts is also among the recommended dishes in Safranbolu, but I haven't tried it even though I've been to Safranbolu many times. If there are those who love and try baklava, they can add how they found it and where we can eat it as a comment to this article!

It is possible to find food for every taste in Safranbolu. In addition, before meals, small snacks are always brought to the table, I love to knead them. Sometimes flatbread and sometimes pita are always hot with the meal, and I can't stand it at all.

Let me end my article by saying that you will not go hungry in Safranbolu. If there are different flavors you have tried in Safranbolu, you can add them as a comment, I will definitely try them on my next trip.

  1. We went to Safranbolu for the holiday, we had a great time. We were generally satisfied with the smiling and friendly hosting of the owners of the çakıroğlu mansion, the cleanliness of the mansion and the rooms. However, my advice to those who will go is not to go to Nile local cuisine so that we can taste the local dishes. The worst memory of our trip is the bad food we ate in this place and the high price we paid for them.

  2. Although Safranbolu has a great tourism potential, it seems that few tradesmen take advantage of it. You can't help but be angry with yourself when you leave a restaurant in the middle of the city, where you enter just because of the local taste, and where the interest and interest is zero, the prices are two to three times higher than this. As a recommendation, I do not recommend Merkez Restaurant, but I strongly recommend Boncuk Coffee and Hotel.

  3. I'm from Safranbolu and I liked your notes, but there is a problem with bagels..:) Safranbolu bagels are called gum bagels, they are not sesame, they don't need any ingredients to fry them, and they are hard bagels, but when you eat them, you can't taste much, but the bagel soda can not be tasted...:)

  4. I've been living here for 4 years, I'm a student and now I'm saying goodbye to my last year, but if you come again, you should definitely eat home baklava in the yörük village, if you like it, they put the sherbet separately for you, they put the sherbet separately for you, you boil the sherbet in Istanbul and make it ready whenever you want, I'm tired of carrying baklava to the family every holiday 😀

  5. I've been on the net with my wife for 1 hour to see where to spend the weekend. While we've decided on Safranbolu, the comment of Umit Yaşar Usta has taken away all our hopes. Admin, there should be a place where we can go one step further from getting upset and convey such complaints. Let them get themselves in order...
They say why no one will come tomorrow, but it will be too late...
I think you can handle this... :)

    • There may have been a problem due to the intensity of the holiday season, I think you should definitely see it.

  6. I went to Safranbolu on 19 August 2012. I had the most infamous holiday of my life. All the restaurants, big and small, were incredibly scruffy. Prices were too expensive to compete with the most expensive places in Istanbul. The mansions were so bad. They think the tourists are absolutely suckers. The food was third class. I won't go to anyone again. I wouldn't recommend it either. Safranbolu is a very big balloon. Believe me, it's an ideal place for those who want to spend a lot of money there and go hungry and walk around the crowd and see the best Chinese souvenirs for a couple of liras.

    • Mr. Umut Yaşar Usta, I don't know if your surname is master, but looking and seeing is different, your purpose in commenting is "more than eating grapes, I think it's about beating the grape grower, it's like a masterful smear campaign written with personal ambition,,,Safranbolu still smells of people streets and It is a history that lives with its people who smell of trust. As Mevlânâ said, "O blind, hasn't the sun risen because you can't see" I condemn you and your sentences that smell so complex… I wish you could be honest enough to write your name…

  7. Where to buy Safranbolu Turkish Delight. I've heard of Imren Turkish Delights die, but I'm waiting for help.

  8. I bought saffron flower cologne too. You can reach www.safrancicegi.com.tr at 03707122016.Number. Also, saffron flower cologne and saffron flower soap are sold in genuine Safranbolu saffron. It is a very cute shop. It is possible to sell it on the internet. Safranbolu is a great place.

  9. During my journey to get to know Safranbolu's unique beauty, I discovered so many beautiful places and people, don't ask.. They make the presentations of the Local Products very kindly, congratulations. I have no doubt that it will become one of Safranbolu's famous products in time… I don't know if any of you have tried it before, but it has become an indispensable product for me. Is there a place where I can order, if you can help me, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

    • When I searched the web, I came across many sites that were selling before but currently do not have any products. Maybe if you order the product, they can send it to you over the phone.
      Yours

  10. I am impressed by Safranbolu. Cave District Governors Travel House Imren 1942 Turkish Delight Company Cobblestones Bagel Gözoz Golf Carts Saffron Cologne Turkish Delights Halvah and Girls…………….

  11. site super.imren i ate chocolate delight. it's seriously amazing. even the coffee world has discovered envy. Turkish delights go from Safranbolu to 1942 imren facilities. Also ttok is a benefactor for Safranbolu. Mr. Celik is glad he was a pioneer in this tourism surge in Safranbolu. Rest in peace. And saffron flower cologne and Saffron flower soap was made. The cologne was superb. I tried its scent while serving Turkish delight. Really high quality. Safranbolu and its people are livable…….

    • I can't tell you how happy your nice comments make me. It would be great if those who went like you could add what I didn't write.

  12. Mustafa Kemal Basic

As someone who has just come from Safranbolu, I can say that what is written and told is just the beginning. There are so many places and people in the city that you can visit, eat and learn interesting information.

In terms of food, pancakes and vineyard soda are superb, there is also a bagel variety unique to this place, the room is a different taste, I have nothing to say for Turkish delight shops, but in addition, you should definitely buy summer halva from SafranTat and eat it. A special recommendation is that it is superb with raki 🙂

I'm sure you will write about places to visit, but maybe a little information can be very useful for those who read the article and those who will go. Under the old bazaar Kazdağlıoğlu mosque, there is an agency that makes city tours with golf carts, the prices are unbelievably economical, the city tour that takes 45 minutes is 8,5 TL, but I recommend you to tour with a guide, especially Hasan teacher. It tells you all about who owns every street and every house.

Long story short, it's a must see place, maybe I'll write a more detailed article on my own blog.

  13. I lived in Karabük for a long time. Although I can't go to Safranbolu very often, you have summarized the things to eat and drink very well. I've been away for 5 years. I was very surprised to see Bağlar soda in the pictures, it is the most famous beverage of Karabük since our childhood. It's nice to say that it still hasn't lost its place 🙂
