We didn't have much expectations for food on our way to Sofia. We were very happy with what we ate when we went. Sofia, or even Bulgaria in general, is our neighbor, our food culture is very similar. You can see what's on my mind when it comes to eating and drinking in Sofia;

Sofia Food & Drink Guide
  • Yogurt and cheese, which you can't easily find in other countries, are on the shelves.
  • You can find foods that are frequently found in us, such as boza and pumpkin dessert.
  • Cookies are also very popular in Bulgaria, it is possible to find huge snack shops. They are even very assertive about almonds.
  • Pies and pastries await you with plenty of delicious options. Banitza is a Bulgarian cake, preferred for breakfast and eaten with boza or ayran.
  • In addition, meat dishes, shashlik are the most preferred dishes in Sofia.
  • You may have heard of Plovdiv meatballs, and it is possible to find many types of kebab such as meatballs.

What to Eat in Sofia? Where to Eat?

In response to the question of what to eat and where to eat in Sofia, I list the places we prefer for our meals below. You can add your additions as comments.

  • Memento Cafe: This cafe on Vitosha street is one of the many cafes on the street. We entered by chance to have breakfast on the first day. Since we love coffee, we stopped by for coffee afterwards.

  • Covered market: I've always loved market places, we had our lunch two days at the aunt pastry shop in this market. It was very tasty. Balkan pastries are well known, pastries are very good in Bulgaria.
  • Christmas Market: If you are going at Christmas time like us, you can find many foods from hot dogs to sweets at the Christmas Market. As there are meat dishes in Bulgaria, products such as sausage and sausage are also extremely tasty, I recommend.

  • Hadjidraganov's Cellars: On the first evening, we wanted a place to eat locally and found this place on Trip Advisor, but very touristy big and tasteless portions and slow service disappointed us a bit, so I don't recommend it much, but if you're looking for a touristy place to eat local, this is it. Local musicians are also visiting the tables while you eat.

  • Happy Grill: We regret that we did not go to this restaurant, which is recommended by everyone without exception, on the first day when coming to Sofia. The food options are rich, the prices are reasonable, the service is fast and caring… It's like a food heaven ???? It was definitely our favourite. This is actually an American type restaurant. There is a wide range of menus from meat dishes to sushi. I have not seen anyone who went to this restaurant, which has branches in many cities in Bulgaria, and was not satisfied.

As in many cities of Bulgaria, there are many Turkish restaurants in Sofia. However, I did not stop by Turkish restaurants during my travels, as I prefer the food of the place I go to instead of Turkish food.

What to Drink in Sofia

Sofia is very economical for both food and drink. In Sofia you can easily find local Bulgarian beers and wines at very affordable prices and almost everywhere. There are vineyards and wine routes in the southern part of Bulgaria, it can be a good travel plan to come and see it at the vintage time.

In cafes and restaurants, you can drink a glass of beer for 3 levs and imported beers for 5 levs. You can drink 1 bottle of wine for around 15 leva. It is much cheaper if you want to buy from the markets.

Rakia, also known as Bulgarian raki, is one of the local drinks. It doesn't look like our raki, I had a glass to try it, but it's not for me.

Bulgaria and Sofia are very rich and satisfying in terms of food and drink, you will not go hungry, don't worry 🙂
