Around the World in 80 Days is a book written by two friends. One of the authors is Muammer Yılmaz. Muammer is the child of a Turkish family who opened his eyes in France. He studied cinema and anthropology at the University of Strasbourg. He is directing and photographing. He is also the creator of the "I Have a Dream" project. The other writer is Muammer's German friend Milan Bihlmann. Despite being educated in international trade, he is juggling professionally.

Both Muammer and Milan are not bankrupt optimists! This is how the journey that is the subject of the book begins! They travel 19 countries and 47.000 kilometers. The duo wrote and published their first book, Around the World in 80 Days, in French. Then the book was translated into English and Turkish and published in Turkey by Ephesus Publications.

My Comments and Evaluations on the Book Around the World in 80 Days

This book is very inspiring, in which Muammer and Milan describe their penniless journey, relying on their belief that there are good people in the world. It proves to those who say that I have no money, I do not have time, I have all kinds of excuses to make my dreams come true, in fact, all we need is a dream!

The book is very gripping, I read it quickly on the road during my travels in Bursa and Burdur. They described each day separately. I read it in the blink of an eye, saying "I wonder what's going to happen to them tomorrow".

The saddest part of the story, for us, is that their equipment was stolen as soon as they arrived in Istanbul. In this book, which was published in different languages, the image of Istanbul created when the author was a Turk is very sad for us. The fate of the stolen equipment and whether they replaced it or not is up in the air. Fortunately, his experiences in Turkey are always positive and make you forget what they experienced for the first time.

While the book is very inspiring, of course I also have criticisms:

  • Although the names of the people they meet on the road are important to them, a lot of names every day are boring and tiring for the reader after a point. The interesting stories of the people they met on that road could have been given more space. For example, I want to read the details of the interactions and stories on page 28.
  • We are very positive, the world is very positive message is underlined too much. Every day ends with almost the same message. We got that message, you can't help but say what else.
  • By the way, I have to say that the translation of the book is not very good either. How little do we use the word "interaction" in Turkish? This word is used almost on every page of the book.
  • Some story disconnects also bothered me. For example, where did İlker come from, who was included in the team during the Pakistani transition? Similarly, the philosophy of the Optimistic Traveler pops up in Thailand. However, it was never mentioned before.
  • While reading the book, there were many pages where I wished there was a photograph of this moment. When I read a book, I like the depiction of the place or people the subject takes place. Adding photos to the book would be a good way to show the untold things in the author.

Being positive, being optimistic, trusting and loving all the people in the world are easy words to write and very difficult to apply. I wish Muammer and Milan success on their journey!

Stay on track!

"Does he who reads a lot or travels a lot?" I started by saying, I am still looking for an answer. I travel after my dreams and share my experiences on my blog, newspapers and magazines. I love to travel, read, write and dream.
