Where is Doğanbey, How to Go to Doğanbey Village?

Doganbey is a beautiful village consisting of two-storey stone houses, nestled on the Dilek Mountains (Mykale Mountains) and surrounded by greenery divided by a stream passing through it. With its distance of 30 km to Söke, 87 km to Aydın center and 39 km to Didim, it is close to many historical and natural beauties of the Aegean.

If you are coming to Doğanbey via Söke, you can easily reach it by following the “Old Doğanbey Village” signs after passing the Ancient City of Priene. You can come here with your private vehicle, as far as I know, there is no public transport.

History of Doğanbey

The history of Doğanbey Village dates back to BC. It dates back to the 7th century. The village, which was founded with the name "Domatia", which means rooms in Greek, took the name "Doğanbey" over time. Until 1924, Greeks lived in the village. The architects of the stone houses and paved roads are predominantly Greeks. When the Greeks who lived here during the population exchange migrated to Greece, the village was left without a home. For a long time, no one came and settled here, and the village remained empty year after year as it was not found suitable for the Balkan Turks who came with the population exchange to live.

The Turks, who recently bought the houses, have restored them in accordance with the original and a wonderful village has emerged.

What to do in Doğanbey Village?

The village, which was built on the slope of the mountain among the trees, has a beautiful view of the Menderes Delta and the Aegean Sea. The road takes you slowly to the village by the sea. There are two entrances to the village due to the creek that runs through the village. You come out in front of the building, which was built as a school and now serves as the Visitor Information Center. You can get a lot of information about the village here. Therefore, it would be better to start the tour from here.

While walking around the village, you will see many beautiful stone houses, old demolished and renovated, with colorful shutters and bay windows, paved sidewalks, and lots of flowers overflowing from pots or roadsides. Köy Kahvesi was closed on my last visit, I hope it will open soon. In the center of the village, there are only one or two places where you can drink tea and coffee, and a few newly opened restaurants at the exit. It's not a place filled with cafes, ice cream shops and souvenir shops, so it's still untouched. Of course, it will be crowded if you go during the holiday periods, peak season, the best thing is to go in the first spring or autumn.

Bay; The only settlement in the Dilek Peninsula National Park, the hiking and mountain biking routes of the national park pass through the village. It is possible to see many plant species in the National Park while walking around the village. My favorite is the furry bellflower, and when you look towards the steep rocks, you can't miss it with its huge lilac flowers!

In our country, unfortunately, aesthetics is not valued much in our villages, so the number of these beautiful villages is very few. The first things that come to my mind are; Bursa-Cumalıkızık, Karabuk-Yörük Village, Izmir-Sirince Village, Çanakkale-Adatepe and Yesilyurt Villages…

Are there any other beautiful undiscovered villages in Anatolia that you know of?
