Hygge can be defined as the art of creating a friendly atmosphere, enjoying the presence of things that bring happiness, spending time with the people you love, feeling safe, not letting your guard down, staying away from annoying issues, that is, having a peaceful and happy time. Remember the moment you drank hot chocolate under a blanket on a cold winter night, a meal you ate with your family or close friends, here is exactly that moment Hygge tells you and recommends you to replicate such moments in your life.

The Danish secret of happiness Hygge Take a look at the detailed article I wrote about it.

Let's get to know the beautiful touristic spots of Denmark, where we learned the secrets of happiness.

Copenhagen

The best place to start to explore a country is its largest city or capital. Copenhagen is Denmark's most populated city and capital, so it's the right place to start your trip to Denmark. If I said the capital and the most populous city, don't be intimidated, it has a population of 600.000. Most of the places to see in the city center are within walking distance, and for those that are not within walking distance, you can rent a bicycle, which is the most common mode of transportation in the city, or take advantage of the metro network.

  • Stroget Street: The city's pedestrian, shopping street. The buildings on the street decorated with Danish architecture add a different beauty to this place.

  • Rosenborg Castle: Rosenborg Castle is a castle resembling a small castle in the heart of the city, with a huge garden in front of it.
  • Christiansborg Palace: On the island where the palace is located, there are the Old Stock Exchange Building, the Library, the Danish Jewish Museum and the Royal buildings.
  • Christina District: This used to be a military zone, when the soldiers left the area, a group occupied this area and declared their autonomy. Now it's a bohemian area where many things are free and well worth a visit.

aarhaus

Aarhaus can be considered the cultural capital of Denmark, and even made it the European Capital of Culture in 2017. The city, which has been known as a trade center for hundreds of years, has been the center of not only trade but also music. It hosts an eight-day international jazz festival in the summer every year.

Denmark's second city, Aarhaus, is an ancient Viking settlement. Well-preserved houses with Viking architecture are among the places worth seeing in the city.

Aalborg

Aaborg is one of Denmark's oldest cities. Aaborg is a city that attracts attention especially in terms of cultural activities. Besides being the most suitable city for watching theatre, opera and symphony, Denmark's biggest carnival is also held here. Among the places to see in the city, we can count the half-timbered mansions, the 16th-century Aalborghus Castle, and the 14th-century Budolfi Church, built on the ruins of an old Viking church.

Skagen

Skagen is the northernmost city in Denmark. It is the country's main fishing port and one of Denmark's most popular tourist destinations. Skagen, which is located at the point where the Baltic and North seas meet, is famous for its herring fishing. The city also has one of Denmark's oldest lighthouses. When the Danish Royal Family spent their summer months here in the early 1900s, it became a center of attraction and sailboats from all over Scandinavia visited here.

Odense

Odense takes its name from the Norse God Odin and means Odin's sanctuary. It is Denmark's third largest city. However, what makes Odense famous is that it is the city where the famous fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen was born and grew up. There is a museum named after the author here, and you can see statues of fairy-tale characters in the city. When you come to Odense, you can visit the old Viking Castle, the Funen Village Museum, the Funen Abbey, one of Denmark's oldest art museums, and the Saint Canute Cathedral.

Roskilde

Located 30 kilometers from Copenhagen, Roskilde is one of Denmark's former capitals and one of its oldest cities. Roskilde Cathedral, the first brick gothic cathedral in Scandinavia, is home to the tombs of many royal family members. What makes Roskilde really popular is the Viking Ship Museum, which contains the remains of 5 Viking ships that sank while fighting to protect Roskilde from sea invaders. Also, the rock music festival held in the summer is another reason to visit Roskilde.

Ribe

There is a saying used to describe Ribe: You don't get old, you get better”. Ribe is Denmark's oldest city. It was founded in 700 BC as a Viking market place. The town hall, built in 1496, is Denmark's oldest town hall. Ribe Cathedral is known as the first Christian church in Denmark. If you have an interest in Vikings, this city will surely interest you. If you come to Ribe, you can add the nearby Wadden Sea National Park to your itinerary.

Faroe Adalari

The Faroe Islands are located between Scotland and Iceland, but are an autonomous country under the Kingdom of Denmark. Consisting of 18 magnificent islands, the region has its own language and culture. The main islands are connected by sea tunnels and bridges and are at the top of the list of the best roads in the world. Although the best way to explore the islands is to rent a car, you should also prepare yourself for long nature walks to discover the natural beauties. It is a unique route for nature lovers with its magnificent natural beauties and untouched geography.

Of course, there are many beautiful places, national parks, islands and villages to visit in Denmark. In this article, I tried to compile the ones that can enter the list.
