Where is Denizli, How to Go?

Denizli is located in the inner part of the Aegean Region. Although its name is "Denizli", it does not have a seashore. Its surroundings consist of Muğla, Aydın, to a lesser extent Manisa, Uşak, Afyon and Burdur. These 6 provinces surround Denizli. For this reason, you can easily combine your Denizli trip with different destinations such as Burdur, Uşak and Muğla.

Pamukkale Express used to run between Istanbul and Denizli, when Haydarpasa station was closed, this train line did not come to Istanbul. Best Time to Go to Denizli

First of all, let's say from the beginning, do not plan your Denizli trip during the summer months! If you go in the summer months, this city can ruthlessly take away your enthusiasm for traveling with its temperature reaching 40 degrees and high humidity.

Best Time to Go to Denizli
Best Time to Go to Denizli

Let's take a look at why we are going to Denizli:

Our main goals are to dip our feet in the water in Pamukkale, visit ancient cities such as Hierapolis and Laodikiea, and wander the streets of beautiful districts such as Buldan. Then we need to go to Denizli at a time when we can travel comfortably. Spring and autumn would be wonderful. If you go in autumn, you can attend the grape harvest on Çal Bağ Road or Güney. You can see water lilies at Işıklı Lake in Çivril between May and July. Even during the winter months, you can swim in the warm waters of the ancient pool in Pamukkale, without the crazy crowds of tourists.

I mean, any season except summer might be the best time to go to Denizli, but not in summer, summer uh, summer no, don't go in summernnnnn... What more can I say, you probably understand.

Denizli's History and General Information About Denizli

Laodikiea Ancient City
Laodikiea Ancient City

Now that we have clarified how and when we will go to Denizli, we can talk about the history and general situation of the city.

Although Denizli is in the south of the Aegean Region, it does not have a coastline, but its name is Denizli. Denizli, the second largest city in the Aegean Region after Izmir, is one of the 10 largest economies in Turkey, rich in textile and food production. Let's not forget Denizli's famous rooster. A significant part of our country's thyme production is made in Denizli. There are also many valuable agricultural products such as grapes and cotton.

The place where Denizli was first founded is where the Ancient City of Laodicea, located 6-7 km from the city center, is located today. The city was founded between 261 and 245 BC, where Laodicea is located. The city, which was destroyed by a great earthquake in the 7th century AD, was moved to the area known today as Kaleiçi and the foundations of today's Denizli were laid.

Denizli Center – Sycamore Square & Rooster Statue

Denizli Center - Cinar Square
Denizli Center – Cinar Square

The starting point for visiting Denizli city center is, without a doubt, Çınar Square. There used to be a perforated plane tree in front of the Delikliçınar Mosque in this square, and that hole was so big that brides used to go through that hole and wish their marriage to be happy. Today that plane tree does not exist, its name remains. There is the Denizli Municipality building in the square. Next to the town hall, there is the Atatürk Monument with a rearing horse that you can see above.

Sycamore Square & Rooster Statue
Sycamore Square & Rooster Statue

The reason why those who come to visit the city is to see the Rooster Statue, which represents Denizli's famous rooster, and to take a photo. Denizli rooster has been famous throughout history. Rooster figures were found in stone carvings in the Laodicea Antique City, so even at that time, the rooster was an important figure for Denizli Region.

Mosque, municipality, Atatürk statue and Rooster statue are places to see in the square. If you take the Rooster Statue behind you, a wide street will be in front of you, that street is Gazi Mustafa Kemal Street, only open to public transportation vehicles. You can continue your Denizli route from there.

Denizli Center – İbrahim Çallı Art Center

Denizli Center - İbrahim Çallı Art Center
Denizli Center – İbrahim Çallı Art Center

If you take Çınar Square behind you and continue to Lise Street instead of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Boulevard, you will first come across a fountain, named Çatalçeşme, named after a fork-shaped piece of marble at the mouth of the fountain. At one end of the garden behind the fountain, there is İbrahim Çallı Art Center and Çatalçeşme Chamber Theater building in a mansion that draws attention with its yellow color. Let us remind you that our famous painter İbrahim Çallı is from Denizli.

Ozay Heart Statue
Ozay Heart Statue

In the same garden, there is the statue of Turkish Folk Music Artist Özay Güldüm, who is famous for his three bagged saz yaren. Glum, originally from Erzincan, was known for the folk songs of Denizli region and introduced Denizli folk songs.

If you continue uphill on Lise Street in front of this park, you will reach Denizli's historical school Koca Mektep, that is, Denizli High School, the street got its name from here. The architectural structure of the historical building is very beautiful, but it seems half empty now, I hope it will be preserved.

Denizli Center – Denizli Mansion & Konyalıoğlu Mansion (Blue House)

*Photo taken from denizlibeltas.com.

If you continue upwards on Lise Street, you will see a “Denizli Mansion” sign on the right this time. You will see a blue mansion in a back street right away. This is a mansion that was restored by Denizli Municipality and put into service as a restaurant. It is known as Konyalıoğlu Mansion or Blue House. The building is visually beautiful, I haven't tried the restaurant food, if you do, write it in the comments.

Denizli Center – Cloth Doll Museum & Caricature Workshop

Cloth Doll Museum & Caricature Workshop
Cloth Doll Museum & Caricature Workshop

If we go back to Gazi Mustafa Kemal Boulevard and continue on our way, you will see the Cloth Doll Museum sign on the left. The sign will direct you to an alley. An old mansion building is painted yellow again, I think Denizli Municipality or Denizli residents like yellow. The building serves as a Cloth Doll Museum, but it was closed when we went on the weekend, it was open between 08:00-17:00 on weekdays. There was also a Cartoon Workshop sign in the same complex, but I don't know exactly what was done, it wasn't open either because it was the weekend.

Denizli Center – Gazi Primary School

Gazi Primary School
Gazi Primary School

We continue to walk on Gazi Mustafa Kemal Boulevard. You will come across a building with its magnificent architecture. This building is Gazi Primary School, which has historical importance as it is one of the first schools in Anatolia in the education campaign that Mustafa Kemal Atatürk started after establishing the republic. The architectural design of the school belongs to Architect Kemaleddin, one of the leading architects of the republican period, one of the pioneers of the first architectural movement. The school is still actively used.

Denizli Center – Denizli Atatürk and Ethnography Museum

Denizli Ataturk Ethnography Museum
Denizli Ataturk and Ethnography Museum

We continue our walk on Gazi Mustafa Kemal Boulevard, this time a pink mansion will block your way. This mansion is the building where Atatürk stayed during his visit to Denizli on February 4, 1931. Several rooms of the building are decorated with Atatürk's belongings and items related to his visit to Denizli. In other rooms, there are presentations describing daily life in Denizli.

Museum entrance is free, I recommend you stop by if you have time.

Denizli Center – Historical Germiyanoğulları Bath

Next to the Denizli Atatürk Ethnography Museum, there is the Historical Germiyanoğulları Bath, but a part of the bath is currently serving as a clothing store. You can enter the store and get an idea about the architecture of the bath. Next to the store, there is a section that still serves as a hammam.

Denizli Center – Babadaglılar Bazaar

Babadaglılar Bazaar
Babadaglılar Bazaar

Denizli is one of the important textile production centers of Turkey. These textile products mainly consist of home textile products. Babadağlılar Bazaar is a huge inn in the city center of Denizli where you can find these textile products together. You can find all kinds of products such as towels, bed linen, bed linen and clothing here. I mostly go because I like to travel, rather than shopping.

The bazaar, which has been in service since 1976, is closed on Sundays, so plan your visit accordingly. And of course, don't forget to bargain when you buy a product.

Denizli City Museum

The historical building, which was formerly used as an industrial vocational high school, directly opposite the Atatürk House and opposite Babadağlılar İşhanı, was opened as Denizli City Museum as of April 2024. Even though it is a late museum for Denizli, we say it should not be too late.

The museum has many different exhibition halls such as the history of Denizli, daily life, commercial life, products produced in Denizli, and artists from Denizli. I must say that I really liked the curation in general. There are a few shortcomings, but I think they will be completed over time.

Museum entrance is free as of April 2024, I do not know if it will be paid later.

Denizli Center – Bayramyeri Square

Ahmet Hulusi Effendi
Ahmet Hulusi Effendi

Now we leave Gazi Mustafa Kemal Boulevard and go to Bayramyeri Square. Don't worry, it's not too far away. You will walk only 150 meters from Babadağlılar Bazaar. This used to be the place where Denizli's heart beat. It gets pretty crowded again, but not as much as before. Until the opening of modern stores and shopping malls, Bayramyeri was the meeting place and the shopping center was Kaleiçi Çarşısı. In addition, the best restaurants where you can eat Denizli Kebab are located here. Kofteci Yasar and Kebapci Enver in the square are places you should definitely visit.

You will see a bust of Ahmet Hulusi Efendi, the Mufti of Denizli, in Bayramyeri Square. Ahmet Hulusi Efendi is an important person for the people of Denizli as he is the person who lit and carried the torch of the Independence War in Denizli. With his speech below, he gave enthusiasm to the people to fight.

“My fellow countrymen,

Now, Greek Soldiers have occupied Izmir. It is necessary to oppose this occupation and to respond to the attack of the enemy. It is fard-i ayn for the people of the occupied countries to take up arms and fight. I'm giving a fatwa! The scarcity and absence of weapons and ammunition never hinders the struggle. Even if you don't have any weapons in your hand, you should definitely react by picking up three stones and throwing them at the enemy."

Denizli Center – Denizli Kaleici Bazaar

Denizli Kaleici
Denizli Kaleici

The place where Denizli Kaleiçi Bazaar is located was the place where Denizli was first founded. After the great earthquake in Laodicea, they moved the city here. The construction date of the castle was between 1243-50.

Unfortunately, there is not much left of the castle, neither walls nor gates. Kaleiçi area currently serves as a bazaar, and the bazaar has been completely renovated. Unfortunately, it has no historical feature at the moment.

Denizli Center – Incilipinar Park

Denizli Center - Incilipinar Park
Denizli Center – Incilipinar Park

There are many green areas in the city center of Denizli, which are very nice places for those who live here to walk, socialize and have picnics. One of the biggest of these parks is Incilipinar Park, where many springs were produced here in the past. This is a very beautiful park with a large pond, walking paths, cafes and children's playgrounds.

Denizli Center – Camlik Park

Denizli Center - Camlik Park

Another of the green areas in the center of Denizli is Çamlık Park. This is a huge promenade covered with pine trees. The biggest advantage of the park, which includes many areas such as cafeterias operated by the municipality, a small zoo, walking paths, picnic areas, children's playgrounds, is that it is in the city center and can be reached by public transport.

Denizli Center – Seyir Tepesi

Within the Seyir Tepesi area, which is an urban forest overlooking Denizli; There are Waterfall Garden, Country Restaurant, Handicraft Sales Point, Youth Valley, Horozköy, Endless Garden and Colorful Forest (Culture House) sections. The huge rooster statue here is also quite beautiful. You can come here with your private vehicle or by public transport or by PAU-Kampus minibuses. The facility provides service between Monday-Friday: 10:00 - 22:00 Saturday-Sunday: 09.30 - 22:00.

Denizli Center – Denizli Cable Car & Bağbaşı Plateau

Denizli Cable Car
Denizli Cable Car

It is possible to both cool off and watch a wonderful view of Denizli by climbing 15 meters with only a 1400-minute journey from Denizli centre. You can reach the point where the cable car departs from the city center by bus or with your own vehicle. Cable car exit fee for 2023 is 20 TL per person.

Except for cancellations due to bad weather, the cable car operates every day. There is a cafe at the point you exit. There are also walking paths.

Traveling Tip: If you take the cable car close to sunset, you can watch the daytime view of Denizli and the illuminated night view after sunset.

Bağbaşı Plateau
Bağbaşı Plateau

There are shuttles that depart from the cable car exit point to Bağbaşı Plateau, free of charge. You can stay in bungalow houses on the plateau, have a picnic, go for a walk, and use the children's playgrounds. It is a great alternative to go out, especially in the summer when the center of Denizli is hot.

Falcon Hill

The first view point of Denizli is actually Şahin Tepesi. There are restaurants that make tandoori on the hill, which is at the beginning of the road from Denizli to Antalya-Muğla. In one of these restaurants, you can plan to eat tandoori kebab against the view of Denizli.

Pamukkale District – Hierapolis (Pamukkale) Ancient City and Museum

hierapolis
hierapolis

The first place that comes to mind when Denizli is mentioned is undoubtedly Pamukkale, or rather Pamukkale travertines. This magnificent natural beauty with a well-deserved reputation is a place that contributes to the promotion of not only Denizli but also Turkey.

Hierapolis Ruins, where Pamukkale travertines are located, is 22 km from Denizli city center. The full name of this area is “Hierapolis (Pamukkale) Archaeological Ruins”. Hierapolis (Pamukkale) Archeology Ruins entrance fee is 200 TL for Turkish citizens, free with Müzekart.

There are ancient city ruins, museum, ancient pool and travertines in the ruins.

B.C. The city of Hierapolis, which was founded in the 2nd century, has always been an important city as a center of healing and belief since its foundation. However, it was badly damaged in the earthquakes and lost its importance after the last big earthquake in the 7th century AD. There are many sections in the ancient city such as monumental areas, theater and necropolis. The ancient city of Hierapolis (Pamukkale) was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988 as both a cultural and natural heritage, together with the Pamukkale Travertines standing next to it in all its glory. If you are interested in ancient cities, I suggest you spend at least a few hours to see the ruins.

Pamukkale District – Pamukkale Travertines

Travertines of Pamukkale
Travertines of Pamukkale

Known as Pamukkale, the white terraces are formed from travertine, a sedimentary rock deposited by the hot spring water. We can say that the minerals in the flowing water paint the rocks white.

Travertines of Pamukkale
Travertines of Pamukkale

Traveling Tip I: Since the area where the travertines are located is a protected area, a limited part of it is allowed to enter. You have to take off your shoes in order to climb on the travertines and put your feet in the healing waters. It is good to have a bag with you to carry your shoes.

Traveling Tip II: If you want to catch the plays of light as in the first photo, you can first visit the ancient city and the ancient pool and stop your travertine tour at the end of your Pamukkale tour.

Pamukkale District – Pamukkale Antique Pool & Cleopatra Pool

Pamukkale Antique Pool

Swimming in the pool in the ancient city? And in the healing spa waters!

The ancient pool located in the Ancient City of Hierapolis still serves as a pool today. Although the entrance to the pool is subject to an extra fee, I think it is definitely worth it for the experience of swimming in an ancient pool. It is said that the healing waters of the pool, which is one of the few ancient pools in the world, are good for many diseases. The presence of columns belonging to the agora in the pool, which emerged with an earthquake in the 7th century AD, makes the pool even more interesting.

Traveling Tip: If you want to both visit the ancient city and swim in the pool, do not forget to take a swimsuit/bikini, slippers and a bag to carry them wet.

Pamukkale District – Laodikeia Ancient City

The ancient city, which is only 7 km from Denizli city center, is known as the place where Denizli's first settlement was located. The first establishment date of the city, which was one of the most important cities of Anatolia in the ancient period, dates back to BC. Between 261-253. The city is the King of Syria II. It was founded by Antiochus and took its name from Antiochus' wife, Laodike. There is no such husband of ours, who can establish a city and give our name. The city of “Seville” actually doesn't sound bad.

The city, which continued its importance in the Roman period, gained even more importance with the spread of Christianity in Anatolia because one of the seven famous churches in Anatolia was in Laodikeia.

The city experienced major earthquakes and was rebuilt many times with serious reconstruction activities after these earthquakes, but after the last major earthquake, the city was moved to the area where Denizli Kaleiçi is located today.

The ancient city is spread over a very wide area, and as the excavations continue, many new finds continue to be found. What we can see in the city today; There are Anatolia's largest stadium (285×70 m.), 2 theaters, 4 bath complexes, 5 Agora, 5 Nympheums, 2 Main Entrance Gates, Parliament Building, Temples, churches and monumental streets and necropolis areas surrounding the city.

Laodikeia Antique City 2023 entrance fee is 75 TL, free with Müzekart.

Karahayıt is located 23 km from Denizli center and 6 km from Hierapolis (Pamukkale) Ancient City. Unlike the white travertines of Pamukkale, the water here has healing waters that paint red and green where it flows due to the minerals and mines in the water. The temperature of the thermal water coming out was 58/60 degrees. When you come to Karahayıt town, you will see travertines in the center.

This is a region where economical thermal hotels are concentrated, so there are many visitors from the surrounding provinces and districts who come and stay for treatment purposes. You can reach Karahayıt from Denizli bus station by minibuses.

Honaz District – Kaklik Cave

Kaklik Cave
Kaklik Cave

What would it be like if you took Pamukkale travertines and placed them inside a cave? Here is the answer to this question Kaklık Cave. Located within the borders of Honaz district, 30 km from Denizli city center, the cave is one of the lesser-known but must-see beauties in Denizli.

The colorless and clear thermal spring water, whose source is outside the cave, flows into the cave by making waterfalls and forms travertines at that time. Both the section where the water you see in the photo below is pooled, and the travertines inside the cave are unique beauties in the world. The only flaw of this beauty is the intense sulfur smell, you will manage that much now.

Kaklik Cave

There are also thermal water pools right next to the cave.

When you come to Kaklik Cave; The highest mountain in the Aegean Region Mount Honaz National ParkYou can also consider adding it to your itinerary. You can picnic, camp and hike in the national park.

Denizli's Çal district has been famous for its wines made from Çal Karası grapes since ancient times. The ancient city of Dionysopolis, named after the mythological wine god Dionysus, is also located in Çal. As such, there are large and small wine producers in the region. Among these producers, Kuzubağ, Lermonos, Erdel and Küp came together to form the Çal Bağ Yolu protourism* route. I think that pre-tourism, which is very common in the world, is also very valuable for our country. A route was created in the region where you can explore not only the vineyards but also the cultural and natural beauties, and it was very beautiful.

In Çal District, Aşağıseyit (Village) Neighborhood, it is an event that is traditionally called “sheep olympics”, which has been going on for 8 centuries, and reveals the love and integration of people with their animals.

It is held in the last week of August every year. The sheep (herd leader) jumping into the water with the shepherd and the other sheep of the flock from one side of the Menderes River to the other are competed among the shepherds. The legend that inspired the competition held every year in Aşağıseyit (Köyü) Mahallesi;

“A shepherd from the Karakoyunlu Tribe gets a job with one of the Oghuz chiefs who settled in the Çal region. The shepherd and the brain's daughter fall in love. Bey said to the shepherd, 'You will feed the sheep salt for 3 days and you will cross the Büyük Menderes River without them drinking water' so that he can marry his daughter. The shepherd, who accepts this condition, passes the games across without drinking water, as it is said. Despite the shepherd's success, the gentleman still does not give his daughter away. The shepherd is expelled from the region when the Bey falls ill for his daughter's love, and the girl dies after a while. The shepherd spends his next life in the mountains playing the flute”.

The local people show their respect to this great love by holding a sheep race among themselves every year since this date.

Dishes of Denizli – What to Eat and Where to Eat in Denizli?

Semolina Halva with Ice Cream in Hacı Şerif

Confectioner Hacı Şerif is one of the first places that come to mind when Denizli is mentioned. Although he is known for his semolina halva with ice cream, Hacı Şerif has a wide range of products from jams to desserts, from Turkish delight to chocolates. Of course, the most famous dessert is semolina with ice cream, but I would definitely say try the chocolate balls with tahini and walnut jam.

Hacı Şerif has many branches in Denizli; In fact, it now has branches in many cities such as Izmir, Antalya, Aydın, Eskişehir and Istanbul.

Denizli Kebab at Kebapçı Enver

Denizli Kebab
Denizli Kebab

Denizli Kebab is a type of kebab made from lamb meat cooked in a stone oven. Meat is served with pita and cutlery is not provided, you have to eat it by hand. Now they give a fork to those who want it. This kebab, which is incredibly delicious due to the way it is cooked and the fat of the meat, is served with only tomatoes and dry onions. This is one of the best kebabs I have eaten in Turkey.

Kebab Shop Enver

Denizli Kebab is served in restaurants between Kaleici Bazaar and Bayramyeri Square. The most famous of these restaurants is Kebapçı Enver. Continuing to serve kebab with traditional cooking methods, the restaurant has been serving since 1927. The master's son-in-law is now running this place. If you stay in the afternoon, kebab may not be left, I say eat it before it's late.

Just below the Bayramyeri Mosque is Köfteci Yaşar, which has been serving for many years. If you say that I will not eat lamb kebab, but I will eat a nice meatball, this place is a good option.

Tavas is one of the districts of Denizli. The reason why its baklava is famous is that it is cooked with traditional materials and methods on special occasions such as engagements, weddings and holidays. Pan Baklava; Yellow hard baklava differs from other balkavas because it is made with urga flour, which is made by mixing wheat flour, wholemeal flour and barley flour, and is cooked in a black oven. It is mostly made with walnuts. You will see the signs “Tavas Baklava is available” in many patisseries in the center of Denizli. Not my favorite sweetie.

Snow Halva

Snow Halva is a kind of dessert that you can find mostly in the southern provinces of our country, in the provinces near which there are mountains with snow on their peaks. It is prepared by adding sweet syrup on clean snow. Although molasses is the most natural additive, it can also be eaten with additions such as sour cherry and black mulberry extract. I came across this traditional dessert, which is now almost forgotten, at Kaleiçi Bazaar in Denizli.
