A Short Brief About the Pony

First of all, let's get to know Lesbos Island! We are the only ones who call Lesbos Island Mytilene Island. The name Mytilene comes from Mitilini, the largest settlement on the island and the closest city to us. We Turks decided to give the name of this city to the whole island, but the Greeks call this beautiful island Lesvos, it is also read as Lesbos. Lesvos was the name of the son of the hero Lapithos of Thessaly. After Thessalians, Genoese, Byzantines, the island passed to the Ottoman Empire in 1462. In 1914, the island remained under the auspices of the Ottoman Empire until it passed to Greece. During the population exchange period, many Greeks living in Turkey came to the island.

Pony; Nobel Prize-winning poet Odysseus Elitis wrote in the Ancient Hellenic Period “10. famous female poet described as "the fairy of art" It has hosted famous names such as Sappho, Namık Kemal, Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha.

While the sides of Lesbos facing Turkey are full of olive and pine forests, the side open to the Aegean Sea is dry and windy. If you proceed in an east-west direction on the island, you will suddenly encounter windy roads where the vegetation disappears while making your way through the pine forests, do not be surprised.

Ferries depart from Ayvalık at 09:00 in the morning and from Mitilini at 18:00 in the evening. You can buy your tickets from the companies' website or from their offices in Ayvalık port. Ayvalık offices open at 07:00 in the morning. There is a small kiosk inside the ferry where you can buy food and drinks, so you won't be hungry or thirsty.

On my two Lesbos trips, Turyol company's preference is lower than that of Turyol company. Ayvalik-Midilli ferry ticket pricesyou will see.

How to Travel in Mytilene?

How to Travel in Mytilene?
How to Travel in Mytilene?

Lesbos Island, with its over 1600 square kilometers, can make it difficult for you to plan a trip. Although the distances appear short on the map, the roads are narrow and winding due to its mountainous nature. It is not possible to travel fast, it is useful to make your travel plan accordingly.

I rented a 125 CC scooter on my first visit to Lesbos, and rented a car on my second visit. There is also an intercity bus, but since it departs 1-2 times a day, it may prevent you from making a flexible plan. Another option is to join the tours departing from Ayvalık.

If you are thinking of renting a car and you will come to the island on the weekend, there is a serious density in car rental companies. For this reason, it is better to rent your car before you go. When you want to rent a car online, the prices are a bit high. We tried our luck by sending e-mails to a few of the companies on the island. We rented a small class car for less than 50 Euros per day with Discovery Car Rental. Weekday numbers can drop to 45 Euros. [email protected] You can contact us at.

Best Time to Go to Mytilene

Since Lesbos is an island located in the North Aegean, it is an island with plenty of wind and a cold sea. Therefore, the best time to go to Lesbos is during the summer months. My first trip to Mytilene was in June without schools holidays and the island was very quiet and secluded. My second trip was at the beginning of August, although it was a bit more crowded than June, but still there was no disturbing crowd. It was sunny for both months.

Places to Visit in Lesvos

Lesbos is a very suitable island to relax for two days or to spend a week of active holiday. It is best to decide what you want and plan a trip accordingly. So that you can decide what you want Things to do in Lesvos Let's start from there first. The following sequence progresses as East>North>West>South according to the direction order on the map.

Mitilini (Mitilini Center)

Mitilini (Mitilini Center)
Mitilini (Mitilini Center)

The largest city and center of the island is Mitilini, the city of Lesbos. Ayvalık ferries land here. Since there is a mutual ferry in the morning and evening, it is very good in terms of transportation options. The ferry, which departs from Ayvalık at 09:00 in the morning, arrives in Mitilini at around 10:30.

This is the most lively and crowded city of the island. Agios Therapontas Church, Statue of Liberty, Sapfo square and the shops around it, Gataluzi Castle are places to see in the center of Mitilini. I wandered around these places on the last day, not when I got off the ferry on the first day.

As soon as you get off the ferry, you can also take care of your business such as renting a car here, click here for details > Transportation in Lesvos

panagiouda

It is not easy to find a seaside town very close (5km) to Mitilini. I had stopped for a coffee break. It can also be visited for a swim or a lunch break.

Thermi Town and Abandoned Sarlitza Palace

Abandoned Sarlitza Palace
Abandoned Sarlitza Palace

On the way to the north from Mitilini, the town of Thermi is famous for its hot springs. The region was also famous for its hot springs during the Roman Period. Remains of the Temple of Artemis and a bath were found. In the Ottoman period, hot water sources were used again.

Sarlitza Palace was a spa hotel built in the period when Lesbos was attracting the attention of European society. However, the hotel was closed due to the economic crisis and the island's loss of popularity. Over time, the old building turned into a ghost hotel. He had a beautiful place by the sea. Maybe one day a new hotel will be built.

Mantamados Village & Taksiyarhis Monastery

Mantamados Village
Mantamados Village

Mantamados Village can be one of your stops on the way while continuing from Mitilini to Silaminia. Located 35 km from Lesbos, the village got its name from the word “Manda”. You can find the best milk and dairy products of the island in this small village. Basil's church, which is a small church for the nice cafes and restaurants in the village square, is worth seeing in the village. Ceramics and meat are among the traditional products you can find in the village.

Would you like to see the beauty of the Mantamados map in the village square?

Taksiyarhis Church & Monastery in the village is one of the most famous churches of the island. Taksiyarhis Church is considered the center of 140 churches dedicated to the archangel Michael. The reason why the church is famous is the Archangel Michael, Taksiyarhis Icon, located inside. In the 10th century, Lesbos was frequently attacked by pirates. They thought it would be safe if we built a monastery on the hill, further inland from the sea, to protect them from pirates. However, pirates suddenly attacked here one night and killed 39 monks living in the monastery. The only surviving priest in the monastery, who survived the pirates, made the Taksiyarhis Icon, using soil and candles stained with the blood of the deceased priests. The icon is still on display in the church, but photography is prohibited inside. Let me also mention that there is one Taksiyarhis Church in Cunda and Ayvalık on the opposite shore.

Mankatsa Waterfall, close to the village, is also among the places to see. You can also find beautiful beaches when you go down the hill to the sea.

Village of Sikaminia

Village of Sikaminia
Village of Sikaminia

Many settlements in Lesvos are located in two separate areas as the coast and the hill. While Sikaminia is a village established in the north of Lepetimnos, one of the high slopes of Lesvos, the coastal part is called Skala Sikamineas.

Sikaminia Village is the birthplace of Nobel Prize-winning writer, journalist and scientist Stratis Myrivilis (1890-1969). This village inspired the author's book "Panagia Gorgona" (Mermaid Madonna). The stone houses and cobbled streets of the village are just for photography. There is also a museum in the village: Folklore Museum Sykaminia.

Scale Sikamineas

The village got its name from the mulberry trees. Skala Sikamineas, the coastal part of Sikaminia Village, is the place where the “Mouria tou Myrivili” restaurant, which means under the mulberry tree, is located and is known as the place where the marriage ceremonies of the island are held. Also, this is the most famous fishing town of its name. I also had my lunch break here. With a tiny church on the cliffs on the beach and a winding road like a snake, it was a place that challenged me, but I loved it very much.

There are two restaurants side by side on the beach. One is called Six of Mulberry Tree and the other is called Anemoessa. Both have delicious seafood and a great view.

Molivos (Mithymna)

Molivos (Mithymna)
Molivos (Mithymna)

One of the most popular cities and touristic center of the island is the town of Molivos. It is a place where you can find all kinds of activities day and night, with a large castle, streets reminiscent of medieval towns, and numerous taverns of all sizes. Molivos was taken under protection by UNESCO in 1965.

Molivos Blue Fox
Molivos Blue Fox

There are many restaurants, cafes and cafeterias in Molivos. I preferred dessert and found an old-fashioned decorated place in the city called Blue Fox, overlooking the sea. I opted for ice cream, there were also homemade desserts, but it was the end of the day and I thought it had been waiting all day, even if it was homemade. I paid 5,5 Euros for the ice cream below, it tasted good.

Molivos Hotel - The Schoolmistress With The Golden Eyes

There are also many accommodation options in Molivos. Where I'm staying”The Schoolmistress With The Golden EyesIt was a hotel with a very beautiful sea view, right on one of the streets of Molivos leading to the castle. It was also the most convenient room in Molivos. The price was around 26 euros.

Petra

Located just 5-6 kilometers from Molivos, Petra is known for its Panagia Glikofilusa (Kissing Virgin Mary) Church, located on a 35-meter-high rock and rock in the middle of the city.

It is famous for its sunset as well as its long beach and large and small taverns on the beach.

Sunset in Lesvos, Petra

Staying in Petra instead of Molivos is also an option. Petra has a long beach, it can be much more suitable for swimming than Molivos.

Skalochori Village

Skalochori Village
Skalochori Village

You can come to Lesbos not for a sea holiday, but only to visit the mountain villages. Skalochori is one of these villages. As you approach the villages from afar, a view similar to the one in the photo below greets you; Two-storey stone houses with tile roofs, spread over a steep green valley. Skalochori Village is one of those villages. These are villages that are structurally similar to each other, with a village coffee house in the middle of the village and a church nearby, but all of them evoke the feeling of stopping and drinking coffee.

Vatoussa Village

Vatoussa Village
Vatoussa Village

Vatoussa Village is one of the mountain villages I mentioned, 32 kilometers from Molivos. Although the distance may seem short, it should be noted that the roads in Lesvos are narrow, winding and scenic, so you can travel 32 kilometers in 1 hour.

When you leave the main road and start climbing towards Vatoussa Village, extremely steep cobblestone streets welcome you. Although it is a little scary at first, you go to the village square by looking at the stone houses around. Since this place is a little more touristic, there are more than one village coffee shop here.

Pony - Honey yogurt and frappe
Pony – Honey yogurt and frappe

Vatoussa Village was the village where I took a breakfast break. When I stopped with my motorcycle in the village square, the old uncles took turns saluting from their seats. I took a short tour of the square and sat in one of the cafes. When you sit down to a coffee frappe (cold coffee) I also ordered honey yogurt. Yogurt with honey is also eaten a lot in Anatolia, in our childhood we used to sprinkle sugar instead of honey on top of the delicious village yoghurt. This yoghurt tasted like the village yoghurt from my childhood, and the honey on which they swam might be the best honey I've had in a long time.

antissa

Only 14 kilometers after Vatoussa Village, you reach another mountain village, Antissa. This place is slightly bigger than Vatoussa. I did not stop by thinking that I spent enough time in Vatoussa and Skalochori, but if you do it according to your plan, this is a very beautiful village.

If you continue west from Antissa, the geography suddenly changes. Pine and olive trees give way to gray hills, and the sweet breeze gives way to strong winds.

Sigri

Sigri
Sigri

You can go directly to Eresos from Antissa, or you can continue to Sigri, the westernmost part of the island, with a curious curiosity like me. I did it, I would like to add in case you don't, but I don't want to mislead you, maybe you will like it. Sigri has several highlights: Ipsilou Monastery, which is the oldest monastery in Lesvos, the Petrified Fossil Forest formed 15-20 million years ago, and the Stone Forest History Museum.

Until I reached Sigri, I was so tired because of the bad road and wind that I unfortunately did not go to any of them. There is also a castle from the Ottoman period inside Sigri, you cannot enter it, you can only look at it from the outside. Sigri is also frequented by windsurfers, if you like it, you may be interested.

Skala Eresou

Skala Eresou
Skala Eresou

As in Sikaminia, Eressos is one of the towns divided into two as hill and coast. Eressos, “10th Anniversary of the Ancient Hellenic Period. It is famous for being the hometown of the famous female poet “Sapfo”, known as the “art fairy”. It also has another famous side, it is especially preferred by lesbians. Since I went in a very quiet period, I did not see a visible lesbian crowd, I am a liar of others.

My favorite place to swim in Lesvos was Skala Eresou. It is very calm and you can taste delicious Greek dishes in the taverns by the sea.

Skala Eresou
Skala Eresou

You don't need to sit anywhere or pay for a sunbed to enter the sea, you can lay your towel and enter the sea wherever you want. The situation is the same with all the beaches of Lesbos, this is one of my favorite features of the Greeks.

Skala Eresou
Skala Eresou

I sat at Adonis Restaurant completely by chance to dine at Skala Eresou. Since I ate alone, the employees took extra care, and we had a little chat. Although I drank beer, they offered plenty of ouzo shots. Then when it came time to pay the bill, I threw my hand in my bag, I don't have a wallet. I forgot at the hotel. I shrugged and said, "Let my bag stay here, I'll go to the hotel and get my wallet". They said, "Take your bag, you will bring the bill tomorrow morning". It made me very happy to know that there are places where there is still trust and sincerity. I still couldn't get comfortable, so I went and brought the money, and on top of that, they bought me a beer. If you go to Skala Eresou, eat at Adonis Restaurant, you will feel at home. By the way, if you ask what you ate, I paid 2 Euros for the octopus marinated in wine and 15 beers. Before the meal, toasted bread with olive oil on it is also served here everywhere. You're stuffed.

I spent the second day in Skala Eresou. Pansion Aparthotel Pension KrinelosI did it in . Despite its retro decoration, this place is immaculate, 50 meters walking distance from the sea, run by old Greek aunts with whom we can't speak English. Even though we don't speak the same language, we got on very well with the aunts. When I was leaving, they gave me a kilo of apricots grown in their garden to put in my bag.

Limonos Monastery

Limonos Monastery
Limonos Monastery

Reluctantly, I left Skala Eresou and turned my route towards my next stop, Agiasos Village. Limonos Monastery welcomes you before you reach Kalloni Town on the way. If you have been to Halkidiki, there is the Ayanoros Monastery, the largest monastery in Greece, where women are not accepted. Limonos Monastery is also known as the miniature of Ayanoros and just like him, only men are accepted.

Covering a large area with many chapels spread around the main monastery, the monastery is open to visitors.

Kalloni

Places to visit in Lesvos - Kalloni Town
Places to visit in Lesvos – Kalloni Town

Kalloni is a place on the shore of the bay from which it takes its name, again divided into two as the seaside and the upper city. The sardines of this place are famous and it may attract the attention of fish lovers, but I was not very interested because I stopped by in the morning. Kalloni is also famous as the place where the philosopher Aristotle lived for a while and did his research.

Kalloni also hosts salt pools and a huge area where you can watch birds. When I was not interested in sardines, I made my way to the bird watching areas. This region covers a very large area, there are paths where you can walk and bird watching towers.

Agiasos Village

Agiasos Village
Agiasos Village

After Kalloni, I dived again on the mountain roads and continued on my way to Agiasos Village, one of the places I wanted to see the most. The village, which is only 27 kilometers from the center of Mytilene, is located at the foot of Mount Olympus. You can reach the village by passing through the roads decorated with chestnut, plane, pine and various fruit trees and again by a climbing road.

Agiasos Village is famous for its ceramics and woodwork. Panagia Vrefokratusa'' (Mother Mary holding the Prophet Jesus) Church, located in the square of the village, is also famous for its woodwork. The village is built around this church. Many shops selling coffee, cheese, ceramics and woodwork await you in the side streets. Don't forget to drink gummy coffee at the village coffee shop.

Agiasos Village
Agiasos Village

Of course, I also take a coffee break in the village. Next to my coffee, I order Bogaça, a dessert similar to our laz pastry, with custard filling. Normally, I don't like laz pastry, but I loved it, if you find it, don't forgive me.

Bogaça Dessert

The streets of the village deserve to be visited one by one, and the houses with beautiful architecture and stone-paved streets definitely deserve to be seen.

Every year in November, a chestnut festival is held in the village, and next time I leave the village to come to the festival.

Agios Isidoros

Agios Isidoros
Agios Isidoros

My next route after Agiasos is Plomari, but now that I am tired all day, I pass to the village of Agios Isidoros, where I arranged for accommodation. This place is famous for its blue flag beach. They praised it a lot in the blogs I read before I came, so I came believing it, but I saw so many beautiful places while visiting the island that it did not affect me at all. I took a look at the beach and retired to eat.

There is not much activity in Agios Isidoros apart from the beach. Unfortunately, there were no beach taverns in other villages or towns. Foursquare reviews of a few places on the beach were also pretty bad. (Foursquare is a phone application where you can share both location information and comments when you go to places such as cafes and restaurants. It gives an idea about the places in general, as many users comment ). So I took a tour and sat at a restaurant called Sunset, which is located on the street parallel to the beach and has a view of the sea from above.

Again, friendly service, light Greek music in the background that is not disturbing. I wish the places in us could learn these things. This time, I order the fried zucchini flower fries, which I have been curious about since I came to Mytilene, and the cheese produced in Mytilene that resembles tulum cheese. These are accompanied by Barbayanni ouzo produced in Lesbos. The fried zucchini flower was also filled with cheese, it was delicious, don't forgive if you find it.

My third day stay in Agios Isidoros Villa Catherine I did it in a hostel called Unfortunately, I paid 40 Euros for my most expensive accommodation on Lesbos. It's the price of a blue flag beach. However, I could not find a more suitable place around Plomari. Again, this was a retro hostel and a friendly Greek aunt manager, 50 meters from the sea, within walking distance of this place.

Barbayanni Ouzo Museum & Factory

Having run out of time for Plomari the previous day, I returned to Plomari, which is only 6 kilometers from Agios Isidoros. On the way back, I stopped by the factory and museum of Barbayanni Ouzos, one of the two ouzo brands produced in Lesbos.

Barbayanni Ouzo Museum
Barbayanni Ouzo Museum

The entrance to the museum is free, an officer comes to you and briefs you about the history of the museum and the ouzo making processes. Then you go down to the real production facility. Another officer greets you there and gives you information on how to make ouzo and how to drink ouzo. If you wish, you can buy ouzo here. Barbayanni brand ouzo is known as ouzo, which tastes closest to raki.

Barbayanni Ouzo Museum
Barbayanni Ouzo Museum

The officer who took me around the factory made a few important notes, which will be taken into account when drinking both ouzo and raki. First; Do not put ice directly on the distilled drink or keep it in the refrigerator for a long time, it means that when these drinks begin to crystallize, they begin to lose their properties. If you want to drink raki or ouzo cold, you can add ice to the water you drink, but the ideal method is to drink it with ehlikeyf. The second is; If raki or ouzo is made with sugar, it will cause a headache the next day because sugar absorbs all the water in the body. Discarding sugar is generally preferred by companies that produce in high quantities.

plomari

plomari
plomari

Plomari is another fishing town. It is very popular due to the fact that the Plomari and Barbayanni Ouzo factories are located here and the blue flag beach of Agios Isidoros is close. The neat architecture we see in other villages and towns continues here as well. A river runs through the city and the streets with the houses facing the river are full of souvenirs and coffee shops. If it weren't for the ouzo factories, I wouldn't have thought of turning my route here. I don't think there is a beauty that makes a difference in and around the city.

If you happen to dine in Plomari, many people recommend me a restaurant called Maria's Place. keep in mind. They also said that they make red meat very well in this region, but I haven't tried it.

Paleokipos Village

Paleokipos Village
Paleokipos Village

Now I took the way back and stopped by the Paleokipos Village on the Mitilini road because it was the birthplace of Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha. Hoping that maybe he has a statue or they made his house a museum, unfortunately I couldn't find anything.

My route ended in Mitilini. I returned to Ayvalık with the ferry that departed from there at 18:00. We left to come back with our pony.

The places I have mentioned above are the places I have seen and researched. Apart from these, there are many thermal regions on the island. I didn't include it in my plan because I'm not good with hot water.

Mytilene Travel Plan Recommendations

You can plan a trip according to how many days you will go to Mytilene. Below you will see my 2, 3 and 4 day Mytilene itinerary suggestions. These plans will make sense if you have a rental or own vehicle. There is public transport on the island, but it will be difficult to implement these plans as the bus services are not very frequent.

2-Day Mytilene Trip Plan

If you only have 2 days in Lesvos, it is most logical to go to Molivos, the most popular place of the island, where you can find sea, history and good food, that is, to the north of the island. There is a direct ferry from Küçükkuyu to Molivos, you can go here and enjoy the weekend.

You can get lost in the streets of the medieval city of Molivos, climb the castle, go from Molivos to Petra, famous for its sunset, or to Skala Skamineas, famous for its food. There are also very beautiful beaches very close by, also nice places to swim.

3-Day Mytilene Trip Plan

If you have reserved 3 days for Lesvos, in addition to the 2 day plan above, it would be great to start from Molivos, pass through mountain villages and descend to Skala Eresou. My favorite place in Lesvos has been Skala Eresou. The mountain village of Vatoussa will definitely be a place where I will recommend you to stop by and eat yogurt with honey in the village coffee.

4-Day Mytilene Trip Plan

If you say I want to see a little nature, a little history and a little culture, then you can draw a route that will tour the island as I did. Then it would be much more logical to take a route from Ayvalık, which has more time alternatives, to Mitilini.

4-Day Pony Trip Cost – 2019

Below are the details of the cost of a 2019-day trip to Mytilene that I did in 4.

  • The ferry ticket between Ayvalık and Lesvos is 25 Euros round trip. I bought my ticket from Turyol Midilli.
  • I rented a motorcycle to travel for 4 days. I paid 125 Euro rental fee for 4 days for a 70cc scooter.
  • The gasoline cost of the engine was 25 Euros.
  • Accommodation costs of 26 Euros, including Molivos 27 Euros, Skala Eresos 40 Euros and Agios Isidoros 93 Euros. I think it cost a little more to arrange hotels last minute, maybe it would have been cheaper if I had booked early. Also, I couldn't find a hostel-style place on the island, and hostel accommodation was expensive when I was alone. It would be more economical if 2 people came.
  • I had 100 Euros for eating and drinking. It would also be possible to handle this part more economically. I made a little torpedo for myself. In general, coffee is between 1,5-2,5 Euros, beer is between 2-3 Euros, dishes such as octopus and squid are around 9-10 Euros.
  • The total cost of the 4-day trip was 313 Euros. It's a little too much for me, what do you think?

Lesvos Beaches

Those who have followed me for a long time know that I am not a beach or sea person. The sea was not my primary purpose when I went to Lesbos. But we went to an island, of course, not without swimming in the sea. Let me give you brief information about the beaches I have seen and visited in Lesvos.

  • Entry to all beaches on Lesbos is free. You can go and lay your towel and swim wherever you want, even if there is a facility in front of it. If you want sunbeds or umbrellas, you have to pay for them. I don't know the prices as I've never paid.
  • In villages and towns by the sea, there are usually taverns and restaurants on the seaside, and if you eat and drink there, they usually provide free umbrellas or sun loungers.
  • The beaches I see in Lesvos are mostly stone or pebbly, which I like very much, I only came across a sandy beach in Kalloni.
  • On the way from Mitilini to Skaminea, I saw many beautiful beaches on the way, but I saw almost all of them from above, usually stony or rocky, sparkling beaches.
  • Petra, with its long coastline and close proximity to Molivos, is one of the most swimming places.
  • My favorite was Skala Eresou beach, the sea was small stony and the beach was sandy with no finesse. Beachfront showers and facilities are also available here.
  • The beaches on the south side of the island are more preferred because they receive less wind. Blue flag Agios Isidoros near Plomari is one of them. Since this place is very crowded and expensive, the Greeks I spoke to recommended Melinda beach, which is 5 kilometers away from Plomari, it is less crowded and the prices are more affordable.
  • The water of the island, located in the north of the Aegean Sea, is of course cold. I already like cold water, but if those who like warm sea prefer July or even August, it will be better.
  • In general, the beaches I see are clean, there is no loud music, the sea is already sparkling. On windy days it can fluctuate a bit in the afternoon.

Lesvos, with its real name, hasn't become too touristic, unlike the Greek islands.
