There are some cities, you visit many times, discover new routes every time you go, see places you have never seen before, taste flavors you have never tasted, and listen to stories you do not know. Here, ancient Izmir, one of the most beautiful cities of our country, is one of those cities. The city founded by Alexander the Great has been one of the important centers of Anatolia throughout history. The center of this beautiful city is undoubtedly Konak District. which is the central district of İzmir. List of places to visit in Konak I wanted to do it, but the list is quite long, it's not like it would end in two days in one day. I wrote down my favorite points in this article, if you have any that you call must-haves, be sure to add them to the comments!

Places to Visit in Konak

A Brief History of the Mansion Built by Alexander the Great

Since ancient times, İzmir has been an important center as it is the gateway to Anatolia. Konak, the heart of İzmir's central district, was conquered by the Smyrna people about 2400 years ago. KadifekaleThey settled on the hill, which was called Pagos at that time. The story of Smyrna's settlement on Pagos Hill has been the subject of mythological stories.

Kadifekale
Kadifekale

Legend has it that when Alexander the Great came to Izmir, he went hunting on Pagos Hill. During the hunt, he falls asleep under the plane tree in front of the Nemesis Temple. Two Nemesis (the Goddess of Revenge in Greek Mythology) who entered Alexander's dream want him to establish a new city on Pagos Hill. Alexander the Great immediately seeks the opinion of the oracles to interpret his dream. One of the oracles interprets the dream as “The people of Izmir, who will settle on Pagos Hill next to the holy Meles Stream, will be four times happier than before…” Thereupon, Smyrna is established here. Maybe this dream is the reason why the people of Izmir are happy and cheerful, who knows… This legend was even the subject of coins in the Roman Period, one of those coins is exhibited in the British Museum today.

İzmir respectively; In the 14th century, Aydınoğulları took İzmir, while Emir Çaka Bey said that during the Roman, Eastern Roman, Principalities Period, Eastern Rome and the Genoese settled on the coast again. However, the coastal areas are still in the hands of the Genoese. This situation is Lower Town, Upper Town; It has given rise to names such as Muslim Izmir, Gavur Izmir.

Konak from Kadifekale
Konak from Kadifekale

When we came to the 15th century, Izmir joined the territory of the Ottoman Empire. The city, which is the gateway of Anatolia to the Mediterranean, has become one of the important centers of trade. Merchants (Levantines) from France, Holland and England begin to settle in the city. European Levantines were added to the Turkish, Armenian and Greek diversity, and the city gained a cosmopolitan structure.

With the Greek armies pouring into the sea during the War of Independence, İzmir became one of the cities of the independent Republic of Turkey, and in 1924 it was named İzmir Province. While Konak was the center and central district of İzmir for a long time, it was named Konak Municipality as of 1987. That's why I had to tell the history of Izmir while telling the history of Konak, it is not possible to separate the two from each other.

The areas from Kadifekale to Elevator, from the Aegean Sea to the Agora of Smyrna, accept Konak as the center and accordingly Places to visit in Konak center I'm listing my list.

The zero point of Izmir, the queen of Konak Square, Izmir Clock Tower…

The Clock Tower was built by Grand Vizier Küçük Said Pasha in honor of the 1901th anniversary of Abdulhamid II's accession to the throne in 25. The clock in the tower is the German Emperor Kaiser II. It was gifted by Wilhelm. The 25-meter-high octagonal platform and 4-storey tower looks very aesthetically pleasing.

Yali Konak Mosque

In Konak Square, where the Clock Tower is located, a small mosque with an octagonal plan and inlaid with tiles draws attention. Yalı Konak Mosque, one of the most elegant mosques in Izmir, was built in the 18th century. The mosque is open to visitors, but it can be crowded because it is very small.

National Library

Izmir's public buildings are located in the center of Konak. The National Library is among these buildings. Although the name of the library, which has been in service since 1912, is national, it actually serves within the body of an association. With the order of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, it is allowed to be used as a "National Library" by the decision of the parliament. The design of the library belongs to Architect Tahsin Sermet.

Today, there are 1,5 million books in the library. You can benefit from the library's archive and use the study rooms.

İzmir State Opera and Ballet Alhambra Stage

In order to provide financial resources for the National Library, the Alhambra Cinema was built in 1926, again with the signature of Architect Tahsin Sermet, right next to the library building. The cinema building, which immediately draws attention with its neo-classical style, is actively used by the Izmir State Opera and Ballet today. It can be a good Izmir activity to watch one of the shows staged in this historical building.

Izmir Museum

Izmir Museum
Izmir Museum

There are archeology and ethnography museums within the Izmir Museum in Konak. The museum is quite large, and many finds unearthed from the ancient cities in and around Izmir are on display. However, the building is quite old, and while the museology in our country is so developed, this museum obviously does not suit Izmir, I hope it will be renewed as soon as possible. Museum entrance fee, Museum card is valid.

Konak Pier

Konak Pier
Konak Pier

Konak Pier, which started its life as a customs house in the late 1800s, was used as a fish market in the 1960s and is used as a shopping center today. It is still a functional and beautiful building with its location stretching out to the Aegean Sea and the design made by the company of Gustave Eiffel, the architect of the Eiffel Tower.

Ottoman Bank Building

Ottoman Bank Buildings
Ottoman Bank Building

While walking around Konak, you will see beautiful old buildings. One of these buildings is the Ottoman Bank building, which is one of the oldest banks in our country. You will see other buildings of this beauty, in the same architectural style, but not as well-maintained as this one, on the same street.

Historical elevator

The Historical Elevator, where you can watch one of the most beautiful views of Izmir, was actually built by Jewish businessman Nesmi Levi in 1907 to eliminate the height differences between settlements. The elevator tower is aesthetically pleasing, the restaurant and cafe area at the top of the tower is beautiful. Using the elevator is free, enjoying the view of Izmir is priceless.

Dario Moreno Street

Dario Morena Street
Dario Morena Street

The street leading up to the Historical Elevator is where the house where Dario Moreno, a Turkish artist of Italian origin, lived for a while. The street was named after the artist who was born in Aydın in 1921 and grew up in İzmir's Tilkilik district. The street is now full of cafes as it is the street leading to both Dario Moreno and Elevator. You can enjoy the street in the atmosphere of old Greek houses in colorful cafes on the left and right.

Konak Municipality National Library Branch

The beautiful National Library has a very nice branch in the building just around the corner, at the entrance of Dario Morena Street. You can benefit from the books here and use the study rooms. You can even go to read a book on their balcony overlooking Dario Morena Street.

Smyrna Ancient City – Smyrna Agora

Agora of Smyrna
Agora of Smyrna

Did you know that there are the ruins of an ancient city in the heart of the city in Izmir? Now you know. The agora of the Smyrna Ancient City, that is, the place where all social events took place. Smyrna Agora is the largest and best preserved of the Roman period agoras. The agora of the city with a grid plan was also built in a rectangular shape, and there were buildings built on the basement around the courtyard in the middle. The basement floors of the agora are quite solid, a fountain that has flowed for 2500 years and the water system that circulates the agora are the parts that impressed me the most.

Excavations are still going on in the Agora. In the excavations carried out under the section of the basilica, BC. Wall paintings dating to the 2nd century have been found, they say is the richest collection of Latin graffiti in the world.

Entrance fee to Agora Ruins is 2022 TL in 50, free with Müzekart.

Kadifekale

Kadifekale
Kadifekale from Smyrna Agoa

If there is a place in Izmir that we can say to eight as soon as nine, it is it. Kadifekale and its surroundings. However, the slums around the castle have been cleaned, the castle has become well-maintained, and tea gardens have been opened where you can sit and watch the view of İzmir. In other words, you can now add Kadifekale to your Izmir route with peace of mind and visit the castle with confidence.

Kadifekale city walls
Kadifekale city walls

Kadifekale was built by Lysimachos, one of the generals of Alexander the Great, in the 4th century BC. Castle; It is located on Mount Velvet, whose ancient name is Pagos, and which is 186 meters above sea level. As you can remember from the history of Konak, this is the place where Smyrna was re-established. The castle was established during the Hellenistic Period and was later used in the Roman, Eastern Roman and Ottoman Periods. You can find ruins from all periods in the castle.

In the castle; water cisterns, castle walls, bastions and Kale Masjid, the first Islamic structure of Izmir, are the areas you can visit. The cistern is still intact and very impressive. Admission to Kadifekale is free.

Altinyol (Roman Road)

Altinyol (Roman Road)
Altinyol (Roman Road)

On the way to Kadifekale, on the left of the road, you will see a stone-paved road with Izmir views. This road is an ancient road built during the Roman period.

The road, which we see only a certain part of now, stretches from Smyra to Ephesus. Golden PathIt is thought to be a part of. An ancient road still living in the middle of the city, isn't it very impressive? Moreover, it is as solid as the first day.

Places to Visit in Kemeraltı

Kemeraltı is the liveliest, liveliest place in İzmir, where you can find whatever you want; Izmir's oldest shopping center, the Historical Kemeraltı Bazaar, is a giant open-air museum with its synagogues, inns, food and beverage venues and shops.

Historical Kemeraltı Bazaar

Kizlaragasi Inn and Hisar Mosque
Kizlaragasi Inn and Hisar Mosque

If there is a place that comes to mind first when it comes to Kemeraltı and that tourists visiting İzmir must visit, it is the Historical Kemeraltı Bazaar. The total area covered by the bazaar is very large, although the products sold are of many kinds, the Kızlarağası Inn and Hisar Mosque, which were built as a covered bazaar, are of course the most well-known places.

In Kemeraltı bazaar, you can come across shops selling a wide range of products from coal shops to wedding dresses. You can also taste the beautiful street delicacies unique to Konak in the bazaar. Even if you don't have time for delicacies, I definitely recommend you to take a coffee break in the side streets of the bazaar.

Synagogue Street

Synagogue Street
Synagogue Street

Havra Sokak is one of the most lively streets of Kemeraltı, the stalls where you can find everything from fruit to fish, from cripple to lard are always chirping during the day. You can reach the Agora Ruins from Kemeraltı by following this street.

located parallel to the synagogue street Little Karaosmanoglu HanLagora Old Town Hotel, which was opened to tourism with the restoration of , is a nice alternative to have a lunch or coffee break in Kemeraltı.

Signora Synagogue

Kemeraltı was once the Jewish Quarter, so there are 9 synagogues in the district. Some of them have undergone restoration and are open to visitors, and some of them are still undergoing renovation/restoration.

La Signora Synagogue is one of the synagogues close to Synagogue Street. You will see the Synagogues sign as you continue towards Havra Street from Şadırvanaltı Mosque. If you follow the sign, you will see the outer walls of the synagogue and then the door. The lush garden of the synagogue, which is estimated to have been built in the 17th century, surprises people. There is a huge orange tree in the garden, it is believed that the fruits of this tree bring fertility and children to those who do not have children. The citruses of this tree used to rise from Kemeraltı to the Americas.

The prayer area of the synagogue is quite large, its walls decorated with simple and elegant landscape paintings are very heartwarming with their predominantly blue and white colors. Worship in synagogues is done separately between men and women, as in mosques. Donna Gracia, who had the upper floor of the synagogue built for women, was nicknamed Signora, so this place is also known as the Synagogue of Signora. Synagogues are often not public places of worship, so it's a good idea to call before you go.

Abacioglu Inn

Would you believe me if I told you that you can get away from the crowd of Kemeraltı Bazaar in one step? Abacıoğlu Inn is calm whenever I go, despite the crazy crowd outside. It is a lively place with restaurants where you can taste different cuisines, cafes where you can take a coffee break, and souvenir shops in the courtyard of the inn. If you ask where to eat at the inn, Köftecioğlu Brothers and Ayşe who cooks Bosnian dishes are the places I have tried and enjoyed.

Abacıoğlu Inn was restored by the Konak Municipality with the support of tradesmen and received the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Respect for History Local Conservation Award in 2007, and the Philippe Rotthier European Architecture Competition Award and the Historical Cities Union Application Award in 2011.

Places to Visit in Alsancak

We came to Alsancak, the most social and airy part of Konak. Alsancak is one of the places where the people of Izmir and visitors of Izmir spend the most time, with cafes and restaurants lined up along the promenade, wide walking and sports areas by the sea.

Kordon – Concerts & Festivals

Cord Length
Cord Length

Kordon is undoubtedly one of the first places that come to mind when Izmir is mentioned. Here you can find everyone who goes for a walk, meets with their friends, watches the sea, shoots movies, declares their love. Kordon Boyu is one of the most social areas of Izmir with fish cooks, breakfast shops, mussels, bars and restaurants lined up along the coast. Many open-air festivals and concerts are also held here.

When you go for a walk along the promenade, the wave-patterned sidewalks definitely caught your attention. These pavements are the Lawyer who was elected as Izmir Mayor from the Democrat Party in 1957. Faruk Tunca made during the period. Günseli Başar, Faruk Bey's wife, who was chosen as the Miss Turkey and Europe, saw this pattern on the Copacabana beaches of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and suggested to her husband Kordon to build a pavement in this pattern.

Arkas Art Center

Arkas Art Center is located in a beautiful building in Kordon. Artifacts brought by the Arkas family from different parts of the world are exhibited here. Periodic exhibitions and different events are also held at the centre, events and exhibitions are usually free of charge. It might be good to have a look at their schedule before you go.

Ataturk house

The building where the Atatürk House Museum is located in Kordon was built by a carpet merchant in the late 1800s. When the owner left the house with the arrival of the Turkish Army in Izmir, the building passed into state ownership. The building, which was used as a headquarters for a while, started to be used by Atatürk, and the İzmir Municipality bought the building and allocated it entirely to Atatürk's use. Every time our ancestor came to Izmir, he stayed in this building.

After the death of Great Leader Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the building was organized as a museum. The museum, where Atatürk's belongings are exhibited, can be visited free of charge.

Culture

Kültürpark, which was opened in 1936 and is the first fairground of İzmir, has been serving as the largest entertainment area in the center of İzmir, and hosts many fairs and events, especially the İzmir International Fair. Even if there is no activity, you can visit its large green areas just for walking.

Historical Coal Gas Factory Cultural Center

Historical Coal Gas Factory Cultural Center
Historical Coal Gas Factory Cultural Center

One of the most striking buildings in İzmir, located right next to the Alsancak Train Station, the gas factory was restored by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and turned into a cultural center. The chimney of the building, which is huge with an open area of 23 thousand 250 square meters and a closed area of 2 thousand 850 meters, is also giant like itself.

The coal gas factory, the construction of which was started in 1862, served the people of İzmir for many years, but lost its function over time with the widespread use of electricity, and the factory was completely closed in 1955. The historical factory was brought back to İzmir as a cultural center in 2008.

When Alsancak is mentioned, there are also avenues such as Kıbrıs Şehitleri Caddesi, Sevgi Yolu and the Passport pier, but I did not feel the need to write their details. Among the places to visit in Alsancak; We can also count the Cartoon Museum, Mask Museum, TCDD Museum. Since I did not go to these museums, I did not write in detail.

Places to Visit in Basmane

Basmane is not a district that comes to mind for those who go to Izmir to visit. Although I have been to Izmir many times, I went to Basmane for the first time in September 2022. I went and honestly I'm sorry I didn't go until today. There is a completely different world in Basmane.

Basmane Bazaar
Basmane Bazaar

With the initiatives of Konak Municipality, I was welcomed by a multicultural neighborhood that has undergone an incredible change and transformation in the last years.

İsmet İnönü Memorial House

İnönü Street
İnönü Street

Between the historical streets of Basmane, there is a street that is both beautiful to photograph and the house where someone who played an important role in the history of Turkey was born. Located in İnönü Street İsmet İnönü Memorial House, Organized as a museum, admission is free.

İsmet İnönü Memorial House
İsmet İnönü Memorial House

The rooms of the two-story house are arranged as exhibition areas. The kitchen of the house has been preserved in its original state. One of the most impressive pieces of the house is one of the flags that the women planted at home during the liberation of Izmir, displayed on the wall of the back room on the upper floor.

St. Vukolos Church

St. Vukolos Church
St. Vukolos Church

St. Vukolos Church was dedicated to St. Vukolos, one of St. John's disciples, and got its name from here. The church, which was built by the Greek Orthodox community in the 19th century, remained idle when there was no community left. On February 14, 1924, at the request of our Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Izmir's first archeology museum It started to serve as Asar-ı Atika Museum.

The building, which was used as the warehouse of the state opera ballet after the museum, was restored by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and today serves as a cultural center where events and exhibitions are held. I recommend you to follow the events, there can be interesting concerts. The church is open to all and free to enter.

Izmir Journalists Association Press Museum

The building, which was built as an annex of the St. Vukolos Church, serves as the Press Museum today. You will find the development process of journalism, the past and present of Izmir and Turkish press in the museum. Entry is free.

Altinpark Archaeological Site

The ruins of the ancient city of Smyrna, which emerged during a construction accident in Basmane, date back to the BC. It is thought to date from the 4th century. Excavations continue in the area, which is not open to visitors at the moment. You have the chance to see it from afar as it is surrounded by wire mesh.

Kumrulu Masjid

Kumrulu Masjid
Kumrulu Masjid

The best part of walking around the streets of Basmane is seeing a church, an archaeological site, and then a mosque one after the other in a natural flow. Kumrulu Mescit is a beauty that suddenly appears in the streets of Basmane. In fact, its name was Abdurrahman Masjid, but it started to be called Kumrulu Masjid because of the doves nesting on its roof. According to the inscription on the courtyard wall, it was built by Hatice Kadın in 1757 AD. It was closed when I went, so I couldn't go inside.

Help Stone
Help Stone

If you see large blocks of stones on street corners while walking around Basmane, do not call them stones. relief stones is trying. mount stone, especially for women to get on horses or donkeys easily; rest stone, for tired passengers to stop and breathe; charity On the other hand, it was used to put supplies on it to be given to the needy. What a beautiful tradition, isn't it? One of these stones is located on the opposite corner of Kumrulu Mescit.

Radio and Democracy Museum

One of Basmane's new and beautiful museums is the Radio and Democracy Museum. There is a radio where you can listen to Atatürk's voice in the museum, where there are very good radio examples from the times when the radio was the news source of the whole people, and a lot of information about the contribution of radio to democracy, you can listen to it by asking the officials for help. There are a thousand and one kinds of radios in the museum, if you like old items and radios, you should definitely stop by here.

Women's Museum

Basmane's old mansions are slowly returning to social life, which is very pleasing to see. The building, known as the "Doctor's House", was restored by the Konak Municipality in 2014 and started to serve as the Women's Museum. The museum, which has exhibitions about women who are leaders in their fields, activists, and women who have influenced history, is very beautiful both in terms of building and content. There are many women's stories in each hall of the two-storey building, it is necessary to take time for a detailed tour.

Museum admission is free. It is one of the places I want to see again in my next Izmir trip.

Basmane Hotels Street & Sadik Bey Hotel (The mansion where Latife Hanım was born)

Basmane Hotels Street & Sadik Bey Hotel (The mansion where Latife Hanım was born)
Basmane Hotels Street & Sadik Bey Hotel (The mansion where Latife Hanım was born)

One of the most known places in Basmane is the hotels street. The street across from the historical Basmane Train Station used to be a busy street where the hotels that came to Izmir used to stay. Most of the buildings serving as hotels were residences of famous families of İzmir. Many old mansions on the street have been renovated or in the process of being renovated.

The Sadık Bey Hotel building, which seems to be abandoned now, on this street was the mansion where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's wife, Latife Hanım, was born. I hope it will be restored and brought back to social life as soon as possible.

Donertas Dispenser

The fountain, located on Anafartalar Street and built by Osmanzade Seyyid İsmail Rahmi Efendi in 1814, was used to distribute both water and sherbet during Ramadan. The column, located at the junction of the two sides of the fountain, began to be called Dönertaş Sabil because it rotates. If the column does not rotate, it was built so that it would be understood that the structure was damaged due to earthquake or similar reasons.

It is very beautiful as a dispenser, but the stone engravings on it are also magnificent, do not pass without looking closely.

Sanathane Konak

If you ask where is your favorite place in Basmane, Sanathane Konak is definitely. Sanathane Konak, one of the mansions restored by Konak Municipality, has an open-air stage where theater and cinema shows are held throughout the summer months. The garden is beautiful, the scenery is beautiful. You can follow the events on Sanathanekonak instagram account.

Basmane Train Station

Basmane Train Station
Basmane Train Station

In 2011, he got on the Basmane train station and went to Selçuk. SirinceI passed to. Hey go days hey!

Basmane Station, which was built by the French in 1876 to stimulate trade from Anatolia to İzmir and from İzmir to Anatolia, has been the symbol of coming to İzmir from Anatolia over the years. I guess we wouldn't be exaggerating if we say that this station is the reason why Basmane is frequented by people from different nations, different cities and different cultures.

If I were to list the other places you can see in Basmane; Cihan Palas (Security Hotel), Basmane Police Station, Kıllıoğlu Bath, Hatuniye Square and Mosque, Mufti Rahmetullah's House, Turkish House on 1298 Street, Emir Sultan Tomb and Complex, İsmail İplikçi Dede Tomb, Bayram place, Namazgah Mosque, Namazgah Turkish Bath , Luxury Bath (in Evliya Çelebi's Travel Book), Kortijolar Family houses.

Basmane has been a multicultural and cosmopolitan district throughout history and continues to host different colors and cultures today.

I would like to say for the whole Konak that while walking around the streets, do not forget to look upwards from time to time. A mural in an unexpected place, or embroideries on the bay window of an old building can make you smile.

Bonus: Aydın Erten Recreation Area & Adventure Park

If you are looking for an alternative entertainment when you come to Konak, Aydın Erten Recreation Area & Adventure Park in Çınartepe may be the place you are looking for. The facility, which is operated by the municipality, has a large restaurant area where you can eat breakfast and meals at affordable prices. In the Adventure Park section, there are many playgrounds for both adults and children, from ziplines to giant swings. Moreover, using these tools was only 2022 TL in 5. The area, which can be easily reached by public transport, has become a place where families with children can spend the whole day.

Let's not forget that the area has a very beautiful view of Izmir.

Konak Transportation

Travelers coming from outside the city to see the places to visit in Konak, one of the central districts of Izmir, can use the Izmir Bus Terminal. You can find the phone numbers of the bus companies operating in Izmir Bus Terminal here.

What to Eat in Konak?

When you come to Konak; Don't come back without eating şambali, mussels, cold cuts, boyoz, bite, pickle juice, and ink!
