Burdur places to visit – Burdur Lake

I spent my childhood in Karamanlı, a town of Burdur with a population of 6 thousand. If middle school and high school Burdur I studied at Anatolian High School in the center. I came to Istanbul for university and stayed here. However, when I came to Istanbul, I realized that Burdur is one of the least known cities in Turkey on the map. Also, since it is close to Antalya and Denizli, there are very few Burdur people who have migrated there only. I started to hear the phrase "You are the first Burdurian I've met in my life" with whomever I met and had a conversation about the country.

Burdur is a small place. I've been on my mind for a long time too Burdur places to visit I wanted to write my article and pay my debt of loyalty to my country 🙂 Maybe I have salt in the soup in the recognition of Burdur.

For example, the distance between Burdur center and Salda Lake is 76 kilometers. The distance between the ancient city of Kibyra and the center of Burdur is 110 kilometers. It is very difficult to reach ancient cities and places to see by public transport, so I recommend you to come with your own private car or rent a car.

  • In order to get to know Burdur, I would definitely recommend you to include the center in your trip to Burdur. Burdur Museum, Natural History Museum, one of the Ottoman Mansions, Upper Market, Burdur Municipality Handicrafts Center, Burdur Lake and Istasyon Street should definitely be on your Burdur central route.

Hacilar Tumulus – Hacilar Village

In fact, Hacılar Tumulus is a place we all heard of in history lessons in primary school. B.C. With a history dating back to 8000 Hacilar Tumulus, one of the oldest settlements in Western Anatolia. Hacılar Tumulus, which has an important place for world archeology, is located 24 km from the center of Burdur.

Hacilar also makes great grapes. If you come across grape time in summer, you should definitely taste it. Black grapes are my favourite. It is said that the arid and chalky soil of Burdur gives this flavor to the grapes. Grape cultivation in Burdur started under the leadership of our Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. After the establishment of the Republic, agricultural products suitable for cultivation in each region were determined and production started. The cultivation of hazelnuts and tea in the Black Sea is an example of this.

İnsuyu Cave – Çine Village

Burdur places to visit - İnsuyu Cave
Places to visit in Burdur – İnsuyu Cave

İnsuyu Cave, which is the first cave of our country to be opened to tourism, It is a cave worth seeing with its length of 597 meters and deep corridors. Hangings and stalagmites formed from carbonated mineral waters create extremely beautiful landscapes.

After being closed for a long time, the cave was reopened to visitors, but a lot of construction has been done inside and it has moved away from its old natural appearance.

Unfortunately, the lakes inside the cave have completely dried up. Deep pits remain from the lakes I remember from my childhood. After global warming, wrong irrigation around Burdur, brutally constructed dams, tectonic movements, bad restoration, the cave lost its former glory.

The cave, which is only 13 km away from Burdur, is quite cool even in summer, I recommend you to be prepared accordingly when entering.

Sagalasos Ancient City – Ağlasun District

Sagalasos Ancient City - Ağlasun District
Sagalasos Ancient City – Ağlasun District

I think I was 5-6 years old when I first went to Sagalasos. Maybe my love for ancient cities started at that time thanks to this magnificent ancient city. I remember like it was yesterday how impressed I was with the huge stone pieces and the theater close to the top of a mountain.

In the last 10 years, the Antonine Fountain, perhaps the most robust ancient fountain in the world, has been unearthed in this magnificent ancient city, thanks to excavations. The ancient city of Sagalassos is one of the places that should be on your Burdur route with the features of the hill on which it was founded, its defeat by Alexander the Great and its magnificent marble workmanship.

Sagalassos Ancient City You can find all the details in my article.

Salda Lake – Yeşilova District

Places to visit in Burdur - Lake Salda
Places to visit in Burdur – Lake Salda

Salda Lake, which has suddenly gained popularity as Turkey's Maldives, is the place where I spent my childhood summers.

Even though its soda water, pine trees that go down to the water's edge, and white sands do not look like the Maldives, I think it makes a difference with its highland air 🙂 Salda is open not only for summer tourism but also for ski tourism in winter.

Click for my detailed article about Salda Lake.

Akçaköy Lavender Creek – Yeşilova District

A lavender valley was built in Akçaköy Village of Yeşilova District under the leadership of Öztürk Sarıca, the founder of Lisinia Doğa. Don't forget to stop by here when the lavender blooms from mid-June to mid-July and see the magnificent views.

Lisinia Nature – Karakent Village

Lisinia Nature
Lisinia Nature

Lisina is an oasis founded by Öztürk Sarıca on the shores of Burdur Lake. Lisinia, one of the most important cities of Pisidia, the ancient name of this region on the shores of Burdur Lake, is where the oasis takes its name (lisinia: It means the glimmer of the rising and setting sun, moonlight in the water). We can say that Lisinia is the first wildlife center of our country.

In Lisina, which was established with the aim of raising awareness especially against cancer, products unique to Burdur are produced with natural methods, oil and water are extracted and used for Lisinia's expenses.

This is also a volunteer work camp, you can come and contribute to the production here if you wish.

Kibyra Ancient City
Kibyra Ancient City

The ancient city of Kybra, home to one of the strongest floor mosaics in Anatolia, is one of our newly discovered cultural assets. Excavations are still going on Click to get detailed information about the ancient city of Kibyra. Burdur is a bit far from the center, but if you have a Fethiye plan, it is a stop on the way. It is one of the lesser known but very high potential places.

About Burdur

Burdur tripBefore doing this, it would be useful to have some information about Burdur. The area between the Gulf of Antalya and the Gulf of Fethiye, covering the Burdur Lake Basin and the Dalaman Stream basin Teke Region passes as. It takes its name from the Teke Principality, which is one of the Turkmen Yoruks. Burdur is considered the capital of Teke Region.

Less known features of Burdur; In addition to being one of the provinces with the highest rate of sun exposure throughout the year in our country, it is one of the provinces with the highest oxygen content. So sun, oxygen, whatever you look for is there.

Burdur is actually a city of civil servants. It has a small city center and a social life that has become active with the arrival of the university. Livestock and agriculture are the main sources of livelihood throughout the province, and it ranks first in Turkey in terms of milk quality.

Until recently, the province of Burdur was known only for those who did their military service, but it is pleasing that its popularity is increasing day by day with the efforts of Salda Lake and Burdur Mayor Ali Orkun Ercengiz.

Legends About Burdur's Name

There are a few rumors about the name of Burdur, but the basis of all of them is that the name of the city comes from the words "Stop Here" or "Here". Let's look at two of the rumors shared by the Burdur Governor's Office:

  1. When the Kınalı tribe, one of the Turkmen tribes who founded the city of Burdur, found this place, in front of the beauty of the region, “Paradise is here. Stop here!” they said, "Stop here!" The word turned into "Burdur" among the people over time. This is the most well-known and widely told legend. If anyone asks, they will tell. By the way, because of the Kınalı tribe, people living in the center of Burdur are called "Kınalı Burdur people". Our famous Turkish singer Sümer Ezgü is one of those people from Burdur with henna.
  2. If we go back to the past; Achilles, one of the heroes in Ancient Greek Mythology, suffers the wrath of the gods and is expelled from Greece. The road falls near Antalya. Looking at the pole star at night, he moves towards the north, crosses the Taurus Mountains, and a magnificent lake appears before him, which is today's Burdur Lake, which is on the verge of extinction. At that moment, a voice from the unknown said to him in Latin. “Ezostas! (Stop here!)” he calls out. Achilles stops and settles here. Seljuks conquer Burdur during their Anatolian conquest. They learn the name of the village, which was a small settlement at that time, as "Ezostas". When they ask the meaning, they learn that it means "Stop here". The Turkmen tribes who settled here began to pronounce the word "stop here" as "Burdur" over time, and the new name of the city became Burdur.

These stories are the cultural assets of the cities, they should not be forgotten. That's why I wanted to include it on my blog. Let it inspire those who are thinking of going to Burdur. When they see the beautiful lake that Achilles would like to settle in, let them say "that lake is this lake"...

Best Time to Go to Burdur

Although Burdur is in the Mediterranean Region, it has the continental climate of the Central Anatolia Region. For this reason, winters and even spring months are cold, the temperature difference between day and night is high and it gets colder especially at night. It is for this reason that The best time to go to Burdur is the end of June and the beginning of July, when the lavender blooms. You can see purple-painted plains and hills along the road that continues from Isparta Kuyucak Village to the Burdur Lake shoreline and continues to Lisinia Doğa and Yeşilova's Akçaköy village. You can also swim in Salda Lake during this period, if it is open for swimming. In addition, the Medusa Mosaic in the Ancient City of Kibyra, the City of Gladiators, is opened in summer and covered in winter and spring. Music in Burdur

Music in Burdur
Music in Burdur

I said that Burdur has all the characteristics of the Teke region culture. Kabak violine, sipsi and cura are local musical instruments.

One of the features of the music culture of the Teke Region is the throat music, which is sung only in Mongolia and Teke Region in the world.

You can't get enough of watching local folk dances such as Serenler Zeybeği and Teke Zortlatması. For a while, the Guinness Book of Records was applied for with the Goat Challenge, but the record could not be won. Well, we love to play 🙂

I wrote at length about my hometown. I hope that my hometown Burdur's place on the map will be known and visited by more people.
