Kremna is a city built on a hill overlooking the Aksu (formerly known as Kestos) Valley and surrounded by cliffs to the north, south and east. The meaning of Kremna is "cliff", so the location of the city determined its name. The city looks like a magnificent castle on the hill where it is located at an altitude of 1100 meters. You will see this impressive view, especially if you look from bottom to top as you approach the city.

When you see the city, you will see that it is not left stone by stone. Unfortunately, what remains of the city, which has experienced many earthquakes, is very limited.

The founders of the Ancient City of Kremna were Pisidlyans, and the city had its brightest period in B.C. He lived in the 2nd century. It is known that Lydians lived in the region in the 4th century BC, and Persians lived in the region in 540 BC. B.C. In 188, Alexander the Great took the city and thus began Macedonian domination.

B.C. Starting from 188 BC, the city came under the rule of the Kingdom of Pergamum. In 25, Roman rule begins. It remains a Roman colony until the Turks come to Anatolia. The buildings remaining from the city today are buildings dating back to the Roman period. According to the findings unearthed in the city, it is known that the last Seljuks lived here.

The ancient city was surrounded by walls that were 2 meters wide and 7-8 meters high. It was built on a grid plan, as we are used to seeing in Roman cities. The city has two entrance gates, from the south and west, and 12 watchtowers.

The first investigations in the ancient city were made by the Austrian researcher Graf von Lackoronski in the 1880s and the first plan was drawn up by him.

The findings unearthed from the excavations in the Ancient City of Kremna are exhibited at the Burdur Archeology Museum, which is located in the city center of Burdur and has a rich collection. Professor from the Department of Archeology at Istanbul University between 1971 and 1973 in the Ancient City of Kremna. Dr. Archaeological excavations were carried out by Jale İnan and important findings were unearthed at that time. The 9 goddess statues found (Big and Little Athena, Leto, Hygia, Nemesis, a dressed woman, Apollo, Asclepius and Herakles) are among the works to be seen in the Burdur Archaeological Museum, all of them are beautiful and impressive.

Research conducted in the ancient city also revealed that many pagan rituals were performed.

I definitely recommend you to see this museum before visiting the ancient cities in Burdur. In this way, you will understand its history better and the ancient city will become much more meaningful when you see the finds.

Where is the Ancient City of Kremna and How to Get to the City?

Kremna is located within the borders of Çamlık Village, Bucak district of Burdur province. The ancient city is approximately 12 km away from Bucak town centre. Kremna Ancient City on Google Maps application Click here for location.

The highest point of the city is marked on Google Maps, but unfortunately there is no vehicle transportation there, so after arriving at Çamlık Village, you can reach the entrance of the ancient city by following the brown "Kremna" signs. After leaving your car, you will have to walk up to the city for 10-15 minutes on a dirt road, make sure you wear comfortable shoes.

To go to the ancient city, you first need to reach Bucak and then Çamlık Village. Bucak district is located 47 km from Burdur city center and 85 km from Antalya city center. You can find buses to Bucak district center from Burdur and Antalya bus stations. You can reach the village by Çamlık minibuses from Bucak district bus station. However, let me remind you again that there is a steep walking path from the village center.

Kremna Ancient City Entrance Fee and Visiting Hours

Entrance to the Ancient City of Kremna is currently free, there is no control. When we went, there was a guard at the point where the vehicles were left, but we could not find any information about when they opened or closed the city for visitors.

Burdur Travel Route Suggestion While You're in Kremna

Unfortunately, the places to visit in Burdur are a bit far from each other. If you have limited time and want to see Kremna, I wanted to tell you about other places you can see nearby.

  • While heading from Kremna towards Antalya, you can visit Incirhan, which is 21 km away from the ancient city, and Susuz Caravanserai, which is 24 km away.
  • You can visit İnsuyu Cave, Turkey's first cave opened to tourism, which will be on your right at the 46th kilometer on your way from Kremna to Burdur city center.
  • Be sure to see the Burdur Museum located in Burdur city center. You can also add Taş Oda Mansion, which serves as the Burdur Ethnography Museum, to your plan.
  • You can add Sagalassos Ancient City, another Pisidian city located in Ağlasun district, to your route. It is located 48 km from Kremna.
